Is there a pecking order to Ice Shows? This is NOT a rhetorical question. I don’t know anything about these events and would appreciate someone who knows filling me in on the details so I can learn about figure skating ice shows and galas. Please leave me a comment with your wisdom Thank you in advance. Since I discovered Yuzuru Hanyu I have become aware of an event called Ice shows. Looking at them abstractly I wonder if there is some kind of hierarchy around who skates when, in which order and whether there are any “best positions” to skate in. I ask because these things lead me to believe there is a pecking order and t…

Since we're a year out I wonder if we could get a poll. Then we could see if we end up being wildly on or off This poll is asking for quads/3As with no underrotations, edge calls, or negative GOE (unless it's a combo and the quad is fine but mistake is on the other jump(s) in the combo). This poll isn't asking about REAL quads, just "quads" on the protocols. SP + FS (entire event)

We started this topic last season with Medvedeva's program announcements and we're doing the same for the next season She announced back in December that her free will be to Alegria from Cirque du Soleil, and she announced today that her SP will be Masquerade Waltz from Aram Khachaturian, choreographed by Jeff Buttle. All program announcements for the 2020/2021 Season can be posted in this thread.

An interview with one of the technical panel members of Europeans 2020 has been published recently and I thought it could be interesting to share. The TP member was Slavka Grincova (Slovakia), who worked as the Assistant Technical Specialist in the TP in both the rhythm dance and free dance at Europeans and she talked about the judging at the European Championships, why it took so much time for Papadakis/Cizeron's scores to come out, about their skating, and judging in ice dance in general. I just put the text to google translate and corrected it in many parts, I was now too tired to translate the whole thing because it is a long interview. But it is quite und…

Webpage version As the Senior Grand Prix season is about to begin, I thought now would be an appropriate time to take a systematic look at the judging records of our judges. Despite the fact that figure skating judges play a significant role in determining the career trajectory of young athletes, it is well known that they face little accountability. Only the most egregious cases of biased scoring are ever punished, in spite of the fact that biased scoring is rampant and well-documented. Nor does the International Skating Union (ISU) appear to keep any kind of running record of judges’ performances, so judges avoid all scrutiny as long as they keep their bias …

Okay, I'm kicking off some Planet Hanyu Red Carpet Awards In this thread, nominate your favorite ladies' costume of the 2019-2020 season! (If a skater repeats a program from a previous year, you can still nominate the costume, as long as they wore it at least once this season!) Feel free to start over awards too I'll start: 1. Satoko Miyahara, SP (Egyptian Medley?): LOVE the body suits this season!! [source] 2. Wakaba Higuchi, SP (Bird Set Free) [source] 3. Alina Zagitova, SP (Me Voy) [Source] 4. Anna Shcherbakova, SP (Perfume): A lot of her costumes end up lookin…

Sometimes we get a skater's average speed during a program, but I think this is not a very relevant information, given we know the duration of said program and can get ice coverage. There is a huge difference between a program where a skater goes from an element to the next at a nearly constant speed, and a program with steep accelerations and decelerations, to speak only of measurable data. I think it would be easy to get, for instance, a skater's maximum speed (short track skaters, make way, Yuzuru Hanyu's arriving! ) and his maximum acceleration and deceleration, which would give a slight numerical idea. We could go further by mapping the time past by the skater a…

Doesn’t look like Joey is doing the game this year. Hopefully she’s still around and ok. eta: There was a request to keep it all in one thread so I changed the title and all the prediction games will be in this thread to make it easier for everyone to keep track. For the first event, since there's so much to keep track of, I just did a simple reply format so that people can change their answers until the deadline. There's a countdown on the Skate America site so I'm going with that as the deadline https://www.2019skateamerica.com/page/show/1760277-home After this, I'm going to try Google forms to reduce thread clutter and so I don't need to…

Phil Hersh put out an article about the changes in FS expected after Beijing. https://olympics.nbcsports.com/2020/02/13/figure-skating-scoring-changes-proposal/?fbclid=IwAR1UgCQx4B6hhrUAWTo92iprmSxfR9xBh6dcl262_Lr2JcINzuYnG3Uze0M In an attempt to rebalance the athletic and artistic sides of figure skating, the sport’s technical committee for singles and pairs is submitting a proposal with sweeping changes for consideration by the International Skating Union at its biennial congress this June in Thailand. The proposal comes at a moment when the jump revolutions in men’s and women’s singles skating have created a huge competitive imbalance in favor of sk…

In light of the very questionable technical calling at the 2019 Autumn Classic International, and the epidemic of inconsistent technical calling in general, I thought it would be a good idea if we all work together to capture high quality, high frame rate video of jumps at future competitions. For instance, here is the type of video I'm talking about (though note this was a jump done in practice). It was shot in 240fps and 1080p on a Samsung Galaxy S10, so required no special equipment. If we could capture this kind of video for all jumps done by top competitors in competition, we could more convincingly dispute particular bad calls as …

Judging from practices and interviews, the realistic upgraded layout looks like FS: 4lz, 4lo, 4s, 4t, 4t-e-3f*, 3a/3t*, 3a/2t* = 98.58 SP: 4s, 3a, 4t/3t* = 46.37 BV = 95.84 + 46.37 = 144.95 Note that he continues to give up .2 in BV for one of his spins. I know it's not much but I have to think that it wouldn't be hard for him to fix without resorting to the Biellman, which I realize he wants to do but since he normally doesn't, maybe have a back up spin that's worth full bv. Who knows if 5 quad fs with upgraded jump content is realistic but that's what he's going for. Not sure what will get dropped if he does 4A. I'm guessing second 4t…

This season promises to be a very exciting year. The Olympic Champion became World Champion in the last season, while the Olympic silver medalist seems to be hitting her stride again. Of course, there is also Rika Kihira and Elizaveta Tuk, whose triple axels always make them a threat for the podium. With the entrance of young talents like the already famous Russian 3A and You Young into the mix, the battle for the medals is on. Who do you think will shine this season? Will ladies without quads still have a chance at the gold? This thread is meant for discussion of senior ladies during this season.
