[2018] World Championships Men Free Skating

Featured Replies

Managed to see the second half of men's FS (skaters after Kazuki Tomono) live on TV.
I'm so happy for Kazuki's performances in this competition and his first small medal in senior championships. I really love the way he always rises to the occasion and expresses himself. He said he got more nervous after seeing the result but I'm sure what he experienced here will make him even stronger.

Happy for Mikhail too. There were some mistakes but this time he stayed strong and tried to express the music as much as possible. Even though I'm not a huge fan of his Elvis program, I liked the way he tried to stay in the character and continue to perform strongly. I really want to congratulate him on his first Worlds medal.

Surprised so much by Boyang... I haven't heard that he was injured or anything and I truly hope he isn't. I always like him since he was a junior skater, but seeing how he has competed all through this season I have come to admire his spirit and character. Hope he will come back stronger next season. (I hope he will find a way to avoid hitting the wall too... it's sad to see your favorite skater lose points because of the size of the rink.)

Don't know Shoma's current condition but hope he'll take care of himself. (Not only Shoma, everyone should because it's been a long tough season)

I think Nathan did pretty well in this competition so I want to congratulate him on his result, though I can't say that I could enjoy his programs here. At the beginning of this season, I was thinking these programs would be his masterpiece at the end of the season, matured by being skated in competitions. Frankly, I'm disappointed at the way the programs have been treated all through the season, but I understand how winning was important for him in this season.

I enjoyed Deniss and Misha's performances a lot.

Anyway, the season is officially over (except for the EX). I want to celebrate with fresh fruits tart or something...

Ah, some people said that Didier telling everyone Yuzuru might get GP France

His reaction will get :goe:

I do not know where to write my thoughts, so I do it here:).

My first live fs event was Helsinki and I remember my intense feelings and thoughts during the mens sp: wow, they are all so good. This is truly a world championship, and no one dare make the slightest error, they are extremely good.

My feelings here were different, but I enjoyed that some of the not—so—great names had the skates of their lives here!

But I really got to thinking about Nathan. I saw him in Helsinki, I saw him here. And here I came to the impression, that he does not skate for the audience, even a little bit, but for himself.

Ok, but it stunned me nonetheless. It began with the black training gear for the fp, wich I found almost insulting, and ended with the music: some poor souls on the left to me tried to clap along, but they faltered quickly.

(I know it probably was no training gear, but it looked exactly like it).

Connection to the audience? To the other athletes?

Hm.

It does not endear him to me, and I honestly  can not remember one little bit of his programmes but I remember his programmes in Helsinki.

Just some thoughts after the gala, back on the plane tomorrow.

Rambling ended:)

lmao why is every mens event Yuzu misses such a mess (nvm I know why)

They think they can win it and fall apart with the pressure.

Overall the skater who absolutely impressed me the most was Deniss.:tumblr_inline_mm2wbaeqQM1qz4rgp: Kazuki too, but Deniss was special. Just so smooth, so committed, so one with his music.

Completely agree. It was not the first time I saw Deniss live but I feel like this performance was the best from him so far - every move on point with the music and such fun emotions in the end (he had so joyful face during stsq when smiling to the short side of the rink) :tumblr_inline_nhkezmYSxk1qid2nw:

more about Nathan: he was skating without the pressure to deliver but on now super cursed ice, so kudos for him for being that clean! :tumblr_inline_ncmif5EcBB1rpglid:The crowd went wild and clapped each of his jumps and I clapped too, but I felt no real "emotion" besides the "whoa he nailed that too OMG" (it felt even more remarkable after going through 40 minutes of bombing). I don't know if the crowd was really enjoying the performance, to me it felt a different kind of "cheering" from skaters like Matteo, Michal, Kazuki and Deniss(*)

Also agree, I even think his CoR performance was better (or it's just that his costumes where better).

I just hope the young generation will be more inspired with Yuzu or Javi type of skates (maybe less quads but great quality and actual programs) then a jump fest. I know FS is a sport and not a theater but still a balanced programme should win (not that it was possible this time of course).

Aww... Team Japan is :tumblr_inline_nhkf04zUM41qid2nw:

Awww... Can just imagine the weight on his mind throughout this whole competition.

I'm a bit late for this but I'm back home and wanted to share some of my impressions about the competition.:) It's going to be a long post...

The men's event was a bit...errr...unusual :13877886: I don't think I have ever seen so many mistakes in the last group...:hopelessness:There were more performances in the first two or three groups which I enjoyed a lot more. For example Julian, who's such a natural performer and I always like to watch him skate. There was a mistake in his 3S but apart from that it was a good skate (he only got level 2 for his StSq?) Good that he qualified for the FS after he narrowly missed it in PyeongChang.

I liked Donovan, too. I think everyone cheered for him in the arena, he skated two good programs with great musicality! And you could tell that he enjoyed being there. Great debut at the World Championships

Keegan was the crowd's favourite at this event  He looked a bit tired like some other skaters but he was really into the character in both programs, he flirted with the audience a lot haha (even during practices ). And he was definitely the fastest skater in this competition. He's got so much flow over the ice too :agree:

Deniss' Sway was really good, he performed it the best here probably (although many say that at Lombardia it was also super). To me, some of his movements reminded me a bit too much of Lambiel sometimes which I hope would change a bit in the future? He's still very nice to watch. His spins are amazing. I think he'll be invited to the galas regularly because he's entertaining and can sell his programs really well.

Some of the older skaters skated well like Bychenko and Brezina, too. Worlds after the Olympics are always emotional because more skaters retire than at other Worlds or competitions. Not sure whether Brezina will continue to skate (I think he may retire), but it felt like these skaters did their very best and skated with extra strength because it was their last programs. Max Aaron couldn't skate that well but his 11th place finish (+Chen's gold medal) secured the three spots anyway. After the SP I thought it would be Zhou who could save the spots for Team USA..but I was wrong.

Oh, Zhou. I thought he was massively overscored in the SP O.o I don't know how does it happen that his jumps aren't called there but they are called in the free skate. Jumping technique won't change overnight  His skating is very slow and he doesn't seem to perform his programs at all. He's still young but I haven't seen much improvement from his lately. He puts so many quads into his programs, and it feels to me that it takes away so much from transitions, PE/IN, and from polishing his skills...It's about quantity and not quality at this point.

I feel a bit similar about Nathan. When I watched his free skate I could only see the quads and nothing more. The program felt empty and it doesn't help that his skating is small and also slow compared to Shoma or Kolyada. I was surprised to see his scores, the nearly 92 PCS is just...:slinkaway: I find it very problematic that judges think it should be a correlation between the #of quads and the components where these should be judged separately. How does he get 9.50 for skating skill remains a big question to me...and also that some of his jumps weren't called UR   He deservedly won, so I few points less in PCS or GOE shouldn't have put him in the 2nd place anyway.

I felt sad for Boyangman, but at least I hope it's not an injury then. I hope he comes back stronger next season  I still think his SP was underscored and if his 4T was called then Nathan's and Vincent's jumps should have been called, too....

I liked the Russians, Aliev's FS and Misha. Misha could have won the silver without the mistake on the 3Lo but at least he got a medal. He's got really nice skills, exceptional flow and speed. I liked seeing him skate. Aliev's FS was very good too, it's just the shame about the mistakes on the two Axels, those were costly.

Shoma fought for that spot really hard :13877886: It was interesting to see that he skated much faster and with more energy in the second half of his program than he did in the first part. The 4Lo and the 4F and the mistakes cost him too much strength probably. He's got nice flow anyway and good speed overall. But in person it is more visible that his footwork is not the best and he does A LOT on two-foot. His upper body and arm movements distracts from the footwork very much.

The highlight of the men's event was Kazuki! :tumblr_inline_nhkezsTB3v1qid2nw: I'm so happy that he skated two very good programs under such pressure. I liked his jumps and his connection to the audience which was great!!!

The audience gave him standing ovation 2x, he deserved it so much. He can be very proud of himself :tumblr_inline_mueoe3Yabh1qdlkyg::tumblr_inline_mueoe3Yabh1qdlkyg: I hope to see more of him next season.

That's it...there were some very good performance but overall, it was a usual Worlds after Olympics, where most skaters were tired and couldn't perform their best. But it was nice to see some younger and older skaters doing well.
