Ok I'm going to try my luck, too. Not sure if I should put myself as available for the Men's events. I don't want to miss them... but at the same time I might be throwing away my chances to see Yuzu running about backstage. But what if I have to work?? What if they want me to check the bags at the entrance? Worst case scenario, tbh

If it's worth anything, on the appliance sheet they ask you what you would like to do... for example, I wrote "athletes assistance, ice-level, interviews", so they might put me in badge/ticket control at the entrance anyways, but maybe I might ask them to rotate and do that in days where the men's aren't competing or something, I'm especially good at begging people to make my dreams come true and convincing them to do what I want, so I will definitely try my luck LOL.

Ahhh I will feel way too anxious about trying my luck like that.... competitions make me nervous as they are. I think I need to think about this a bit more.

I wonder if they are open to international volunteers...I've got a bit of project management and english/chinese simultaneous translation experience. Wonder if I get passable japanese or korean in 6 months....

I will definitely explicitly ask for that. I can even put professional make-up on and I have a decent serious-looking face. Helsinki-style (that woman volunteer was super pretty and professional-looking. Inspiration LOL). I didn't put it on the form because it seems too specific. First, it's best to get accepted as general volunteer. Same reason that I didn't write "FOLLOW HANYU-SENSHU AROUND" on the form

I think they are, because the form is in English too. And if you have experience as a translator, that would definitely help.

Of course, I would offer my help to anyone who doesn't speak Italian, if the help will be needed. Italians usually speak English (better than Japanese OPS politically incorrect) but some are completely incapable, or some may not think about there being international volunteers. You never know.

It's okay to think about it a bit more. I am calmer because it's my country, because I know people in Milan, I guess the situation is different. I think it's going to be a good experience, even if maybe I'll miss the moment the Men will be skating. But I will do everything in my power to convince them to leave my schedule free at least during the last group of men's skaters xD In the end, we are volunteers. We can always refuse if we want to see the competition as spectators, and as I've understood it, many people will probably sell last minute tickets around.

I applied to be a volunteer :crazyshit2: I can't believe I actually did it.  I will be dreaming about a lot of crazy scenarios tonight.

Thank you for all your advices !!! Whatever will be the answer, I will buy individual tickets, I hope they won't be too expensive (Helsinki prices are good to me, but the Milan all event tickets are more expensive than Helsinki ones, I hope individual ones won't be too expensive ToT)

Good luck! You don't have anything to loose! :fingerscrossed:

I don't have high hopes for the single ticket prices. If the all-event tickets are more expensive than they were in Helsinki, then I think the single tickets will be more expensive as well. But I don't know by how much...I just hope not that much.

That's why I'll probably skip the pairs SP and Ice Dance SD, so that I can spare a little and can buy better tickets for the men's SP and FS.

Volunteers are a very important piece of how a huge event is run.

Everyone of them - even those who are appointed at cleaning toilets - are crucial for a smooth sailing of an event.

Volunteers should be interested FIRST about making the event a success, [edited]

Volunteers should apply knowing there are chances they are going to miss even the WHOLE event, if they apply just for the chance to get what they want and that anyway...

Since it's a volunteer job, you can always refuse, I guess.

they should just take their tickets as general public and let organizers organize volunteering work with people they can trust on without wasting the time of people who are organizing it all.

If that's your opinion on the reasons you should apply, I'd suggest you (and everyone else thinking the same ) to rethink over it.

I'm sure everyone here is aware that every job has the same worth and the talk was as far from ethics as it could get.

Gross seems like an exaggeration from your part. That admin was just sharing their absolutely normal thoughts, thoughts I've had as well, before applying, and I think we've even talked about this on the italian section (I don't remember if I talked about it with you or with someone else).

But that's why one has to think about those situations BEFORE applying, right? If one decides that they are able to work despite the risk of not getting their personal goals satisfied, then they will apply - if one decides that they'd rather not take chances, they will not apply.

I think most volunteers will be fs fans just like us. And which fan would be happy and jumping from joy up and down, had they discovered they would have to spend the entire event cleaning toilets? (this is a hyperbole, of course. Volunteers aren't slaves)

Do you think it would be more ethical if we pretended to be happy, thinking about that circumstance?

I agree that if one wants to see a particular event, they should buy the ticket as everyone else. On the form to apply as a volunteer, they ask you when you will be available, so actually there is the possibility to work one day as a volunteer, and be a spectator the next day. It's not unethical, it's perfectly normal. As long as you say it in the form beforehand, of course. If you say you will be available and then you change your mind, that might be a problem. But this isn't the case, since the person wondering those things didn't send the form yet.

I understand how you might have perceived those comments as non respectful towards the organizers. But I think no one here meant it as "we don't care about the work, we just wanna see Yuzuru, and if we don't like the work they give us, we will change our mind". I applied, so at least as far as I'm concerned, I will do my best to help, as volunteers should do. But since it's volunteering, and no one is actually getting paid (or forced to do anything), it's perfectly okay to wish that my work as volunteer and my personal objectives will meet halfway. Then, if it won't happen, I will probably be pissed, but one thing is thinking and wishing, and one other thing is reality.

It's okay to speak your mind to others, especially when the things you pointed out are legit. I myself have thought about those points, before making up my mind. But I feel like the tone in your comment was unnecessarily judgemental. At least, that's how I've perceived it.

Sorry for pointing this out, but this is so gross and totally not something an Admin should even THINK about posting on a forum.

Volunteers should be interested FIRST about making the event a success, not to exploit their chance to stalker. And happily saying so in a forum. By an admin on top of that.

I apologize for seeming like I would take the volunteering Job less than serious. If I were assigned to any job I would not try to get myself out of the situation which is why I voiced these concerns to begin with. I would take the job serious, no matter what it is.

I will continue this discussion in PMs (which btw would have been the appropriate place to start it to begin with.)

If anyone else has concerns similiar to this they may PM me.

I for sure hope so, I can guarantee you it really does seem not.

An Admin has some responsibility more. But to each its own, I guess.

We did speak about it in italian forum and I did say the same. If you want to apply think carefully about it and if it's what you want. Think about the responsibility you are taking upon yourself. Think if you are okay to be a volunteer and risk not to watch anything of competition. Think if you are okay to be there and volunteer even in the chance Yuzu is not going  at all to Milan.

If you are okay with that, if making the event a success is your goal, than please go ahead, organizers do need your help. If your reasons to go there are others, then please think carefully about it. You are risking to ruin also other people's work.

I think people should be ready to accept even that if that is what's required to them. Instead of saying "we can always drop out".

And I agree with that. You can ask to be a volunteer to day 1, 2 and 3 and not to be one for day 4 and 5. But what I'm stressing out is tell that from start, do not opt in/out just according what they may give you as work to do.
