[2018] World Championships Men Short Program

Overall this was an enjoyable competition. Most of the men did great and the scoring was not crazy. Except the top men's scores which was a mess. So quick impressions:

I agree with Kolyada's score, he is really good live and have beautiful  flow on the ice. He is also very in tone with the music.

Nathan have a quarter of a program only and his Pc's baffle me. Glad they didn't go all crazy with his GOE because his jumps are average at best

Boyang was great and his 4t looked fine but I am not sure since there was too much ice flying. I did expect him to get lower GOE because of how close he lands to the boards, that was scary. Nonetheless, he was amazing and at least had a program unlike so I can't understand his PC being less than Nathan. There was not a single  PC category were I would give Nathan the edge.

Vincent is all drama but no depth or substance. He is expressive and clearly has potential but I think the judges are rewarding him too early just like Nathan. As for UR, his 4f and 3a were rotated but I couldn't see the combo so I am not sure about it.

I think both Keegan and Keiji were underscored. I really don't understand why Keiji's score was so low, he was really good and performed the hell out of that program

Sorry for any misspelling or errors, writing on the phone is hard

I think Boyang is discovering something Yuzu mentioned before- when and if you improve your SS, your jumps start to have more speed upon entry, and get possibly bigger. Add in gaining more muscles and he'll need to rework the control on his jumps a tad bit more. I wonder what his actual jump coverage is now.

I don't have a huge issue with Kolyada's PCS in the top 6 relative to other guys...I do have an issue with those of man no. 2 especially, not as much with man no. 3 (he didn't get over 40).

I'd say everyone would turn into a roll but then, I'm sure the annoyance will just burn it out of them

@Aotoshiro, my beef with the boot issue is not that Uno and his team are using it as an excuse. It's that fans are using it as an excuse. And in a bit related issue, how judges are judging him based on his perceived ability, instead of what he actually delivered just now. That was a poor skate, but the score definitely did not reflect that.

Also, Judges 7&8 are Canadian and Russian respectively.

Well, can't blame you for disliking fans comments, since I'm the same:/ I'm still trying not to get there since it's not like Shoma has any power over what they are saying if he had this jump comparision article would most definitely NOT exist.

the percieved ability is just...ugh, I'm getting depressed just thinking about that, and tbh, if Nathan and Vincent are on top of Shoma, I'll let him have PCS based off of his average and not today's performance (if I could say Nathan's PCS comes from the average of what he usually does I would be actually happy??...sigh, now I'm depressed)

Re:judges, mystery solved!

See? I told you guys- do NOT drink before competition, if even Russian cannot handle doing that (I'm spreading stereotypes I'm sorry).

Canadian judge just went with the names closest to Chan and that's end of the story I guess, Boyang's name just didn't look similar enough.

me, at a corner of Milan, eating my much needed rice and drinking red wine. can't even focus on Shoma's programme after seeing Boyang's score. :(

You know, I hope Vincent wins it.

That's what they deserve, the ISU and the feds and everybody. They deserve to have a world champion who has UR jumps and has not developed even a quarter of the artistry he could. Sell that, ISU.

And tbh ISU would be very happy with it because it means the US the world suddenly cares about FS again and and fans will call him King and call Yuzu fans salty.  Look, on the ladies side you have new Russian queens who ISU grants world records with tanos, over-generous PCS and GOEs and everyone else is just a hater, so there's a predecessor.

That is true, in my rage and bitterness, I forgot that you need at least a modicum of integrity to be able to feel shame.

Quick update before I leave for the pairs: Boyang was the best in the competition. He's improved sooooo much! That program was incredible, and I am so happy I got to see it live.

I'm really worried about Shoma. Why would he go for a triple sal of all jumps? I just hope he is not learning from Yuzu and hiding the real extent of his injury. He even seemed almost happy with that performance--which is weird? I don't know. I hope he's fine and that he'll be better in the free.

I loved Mikhail.

Like boyang's, it seems to me Misha Ge's PCS are a crime, too...

I'm just :judgmental:  @Boyang's scores in comparison with some others I don't want to mention rn

I really enjoyed his skate today. This is just such a frustrating situation. You can really see his efforts to improve his components and yet everyone else but him get the candies

I'm just so done tbh

the US men's inflated PCs are just ridiculous and insulting to the other skaters... :yznotimpressed:

although it's unrealistic to expect fair judging for the LP, I'm rooting for Kolyada to rightfully become the World champion and for Boyang to rise to 2nd place because a girl can dream. by far, they are technically superior to the rest.

i didn't think Mikhail had a chance because of his inconsistency but when he keeps it together, he is actually my favorite male skater after Yuzu. he's very well-rounded, he has huge jumps and the flow of his skating is lovely. the fact that he was able to break 100 with only one quad, something only Yuzu and Patrick had done before, is a testament to the quality of his skating. I do think his score was fair on its own, the problem is how relatively overscored the Americans are:1:

Good thing that I coudn't really focus on scores when in the arena :peekapooh:

Boyang was robbed. I loved his performance <3

Nathan's short is nice on the begining and at the ending, but it's completely empty othewise.

I would put Deniss ahead of Misha. He's clearly a better skater (better ss, better spins). To me Misha was very over dramatic today (but still lovely). I liked Deniss the most today performace wise actually

Kolyada is really good skater when he's not bombing. I actually liked his performance, and I wasn't a fan earlier.

People always say that Shoma really has a big presence on the ice and you can see he's feeling the music. Didn't notice any if it. There is one moment in his SP that I really like and still remember (the little jump during StSq, I think?). His jumps were really small today, don't know if they usually like that or if they are even smaller than usual due to his problems.

Vincent was less boring than on the tv, but the rippon is the only thing I still remember.

I really liked (apart from alredy mentiond): Turkish guy, Julian, Donovan, Alexei Bychenko, Keegan.

Really good competition overall IMO.

ETA: when I say it was good competition I mean performances only :P

I'm not on Kolyad's train, but I think he's the likeliest to pull an upset because of his quality when he's on and his fed and I'm all for it.
