[2018] World Championships Men Short Program

Featured Replies

Even though the scoring is a pile of Pooh, I'm just so delighted to see all the support for all my favourites. :) DeniSS, Boyang, Mikhail, Kazuki, Julian, whoever else is my favourite this week. At this point I'm more concerned with seeing my favourite EXs than with who wins because medals don't exist anymore. (Honestly, the best thing to come out of this is Julian qualifying for the free. I dare them to invite him to the gala. I doppia sfida them! [very correct Italian].)

Meanwhile, Boyang! Call off your minions, or at least redirect them to the judges! Spiders everywhere in here. >_<

Scoring aside, I think this is a good men's event. There's more good performances than bad ones. Some great skates form earlier groups like Kazuki, Keegan, Deniss. I think the top 6 performed well, Aliev's mistakes was huge in term of TES, but the whole perf was not bad. Kazuki is really a highlight. He has a potential of a great performer, I hope he can improve his jump and spin. His SS is ok and quite smooth.

I read that Shoma want to do his original layout. Please don't :hopelessness:. Who care about 3 spots ? They only has 2 spots in WC16 and its still not the end of the world.

Problem is, that is reason he is skating instead of resting!

I know and its not worth it. Tbh I still have a trauma about Yuzuru at WC13 :hopelessness: and I'm so scared when I read Shoma's post SP interview right now.

I was rooting for Julian, so good that he qualified for the free skate. <3 Donovan was a surprise too :) I loved that he was similing during the whole program. He surely enjoys to be here! Deniss was lovely too.

It was such a shame about Dima's mistake, but he performed the program really well <3 Kolyada was great, too -  good for him that he didn't risk the 4Lz. Less is sometimes more.

I love this thread - just reading through all the emotions / anticipations has hyped me up too!

Go Boyang, Shoma and co!

Shoma's foot must hurt bad enough for him to have a check-up. But he answered the interview really well - like the top athlete that he is. I hope he won't kill himself in the free - but he and his coach know what's best for him.

I've been watching part of the men's sp on esp.ita now. I don't have enough knowledge to have clear opinions so I'm posting some of my notes and some comments by max&angelo I thought were worth sharing  (for info, not live comments). Obviously not an exhaustive transcription! (and please tell me if the post should be elsewhere)

On Vincent : in general salty,  his program is so debatable (pre-rotation, ur, no steps before single jump etc) then they were saying that one of the judges dared to gave him 9 for ss and that means you have to give guys like Patrick or Yuzuru 27 :tumblr_inline_mqt4grU8ua1qz4rgp: (tbh this comment is the reason why I'm posting). That Vincent's PCS haven been overscored so early in the competition raised all the others later.

Saltiness continues during Deniss' program (debate on the low difference between the two PCSs and on GOE for the flip for ex. and that pcs/tes were scored better we'd have a more balanced competition) then saying that the same judge that gave 9 on ss to Vincent gave 8.25 to Deniss and that honestly you can't justify it - the only explanation they can give is that he pushed the wrong button

Nice words for Deniss, very nice words for Misha ("Misha in extra luxury version here". Was funny when they were saying that it would maybe be one of his last performance then that it's been quite a long time that they've been saying it).

Compliments on skating quality of Mika and that the choice to have only one quad was good for him. They seemed happy for finally a good skate for him.

Bychenko - less complete package than Mika (ie spins and stsq) but good jumps. Satisfying performance for him and really good given the age.

Nathan - rotation of 4Lz seemed short; 4F no steps preceding, double footed, not sure of rotation (GOE -3 for Max, cynical on the replay that accelerates on the landing); 3A landing not so fluid (someone gave a +2 which is excessive). Good quality of movement and choreo (far better than Vincent, not comparable to him, but Mika would be more fluid and better tr). Should've been more punished on the goe for all his jumps.

Sorry didn't have the time for the last 3 yet but real life is calling me… I'll try to finish later :tumblr_inline_n18qr7hmfk1qid2nw:

ETA: I just saw my post from my phone and realized how freaking long it is   :13877886:

Do you know where I could find the practice schedule for men, tomorrow morning ?

Thank you. But i'd like to watch only the top6 practice... any idea when that could be ? Logically, they would be the lasr ones ?

not sure there's yet an interest but as I still hadn't had the courage to see the fs, I'm posting comments on esp.ita on the last three

Dima - his nervousness was clearly visible from the beginning - big doubts on the risky construction of his program, 4lz was clearly ur (but he always does it like this), in the end not so bad given the errors made

Boyang - best 4lz combo of the event. Pity for the ur of the 4t but the major doubt is that similar jumps are not always called - as the 4f of nathan (double standards) - and the fact that goe for ured jumps doesn't vary in the same way (ie dima's ured 4lz that got positive goe). Important fact is his good pcs allows him to have an overall not so bad score. (Angelo at the end of the event saying he foresees boyang as the fav to be on the podium over vincent..)

Shoma - comments on boots and injury which lead to the change of layout.
