Shoma could've won his first international title today. Sigh.

He could've. It's too bad for Uno. Nothing went right for Nagoya. They put up all those restrictions only for them to be rendered unnecessary but they have to stick to them anyway. Uno could've won but got waylaid by a deduction score that could've been avoided. I'll be the first to admit, though, that the pettier side of me that was born thanks to all these non-sporting shenanigans, and the part of me that roots for Chen (in the absence of the 3 older dudes) aren't particularly saddened by this outcome. The guy did good enough under the circumstances for that gold. And Uno didn't do worse than he did last season. He did better, in fact.

Uno's still the only one who's scored more than 300 this season though. Twice. So that's something. Really wondering how Nats will turn out since he'll be the only one out of everyone at the top who'll be facing Hanyu in competition next, if Hanyu's healthy enough to show up for it.

Men's FS has gone to the gutter with the quads, hasn't it?

Now I kinda wish Yuzu sticks to 4-quads at Olys without the 4Lz because he might actually go clean!

2012/2013 was when he won silver though. Which means his score was even lower, lol.

And it's really hard to say if he will skate clean with a 4-quad layout or not, because we all know it's not that simple. No doubt he'd be able to physically but there are too many other factors involved besides just that.

Tech panel called URs? So they ARE capable of it! Why not in the SP?

Dunno but my guess is they needed to make sure that the scores in that event position the three people the powers that be want on the podium in the top 3, with room to spare. Once that's done, they can finally get down to doing their jobs a bit more in the fs.

Can I say this? The worst men's finale since 2013

Wasn't that the year Hanyu finally beat Chan for the first time? You didn't like how that competition went?

If everyone had performed well I would've felt more sad that Yuzu wasn't there but part of me is glad that he didn't have to join in the splatfest.....

The storm in the livestream chat when shomas score was revealed was funny though, I was convinced that he'd won it but I guess you never know...

If he were there, it might not have turned out to be such a splatfest. He'd provide everyone the distraction they need from all the outside pressure they're facing to redirect their focus into skating well enough to try to beat him (even if he were to end up splatting or popping himself >_<).

I would say both Nathan and Shoma have the greatest momentum going into Olympics, but their scores were much higher in the early half of the season. Does this mean that they peaked early, or was the over-scoring just too over the top?

This February will get interesting :slinkaway:

A little bit of the former, a healthy dash of the latter, I'm guessing? It's not too late for these dudes to get their mojo back, though. The GP series this season has been a bit of a sobering one.

At least the headlines are not over the top

and happy that they pointed this out: (tho they don't mention Patrick, poor Pchiddy)

The Grand Prix Final is the single biggest indicator of Olympic medal prospects.

It takes the top six skaters per discipline from the fall Grand Prix series. However, this season’s men’s field was lacking.

The world’s other top skaters — world gold and bronze medalists Yuzuru Hanyu and Jin Boyang and two-time world champion Javier Fernandez — weren’t in Nagoya. Each dealt with illness or injury this fall but is expected to be fine for the Olympics, where they should join Chen and Uno as the medal favorites.

Like I feel the urge to slap the face of a commentator who said Shoma beat Yuzu at last year's nationals and yell at his ears: Yuzu didn't participate last year! :animated-smileys-angry-033:

Hopefully they will remember this when they say Nathan won GPF this year :smiley-music025:

The thing is, Nathan and Shoma had a prime opportunity to build on their momentum towards Olys here, in the absence of Yuzu and Javi (and Patrick). And they didn't really run with it.

I'm not down for the asterisk business, tbh. You can only beat those who are in the competition. Nathan won. Shoma almost won. Yuzu's streak is broken. Those are facts.

Everything else - pointing out that Yuzu probably would've beat those scores, that judging was inadequate and so on - that's peripheral.

Yuzu is going to come back and show everybody just what they missed, and hopefully make them appreciate him a little more. That is also a fact, though.

I have questions about what JSF has been doing, though. Have they only been focusing on Satoko?

actually, I wrote in to eurosport today because the amt of misinformation by commentators has been piling more and more that it's really so unprofessional. they said they will deal with it accordingly.

Maybe they figure he doesnt need boosting since hes already up there for gold contention. Satoko Isn't?... yet.

I am with you on this but at the same time I don't think the results today are anything to brag about. Not only because Yuzu and the others weren't there but because the skating was subpar and both Nathan and Shoma underperformed.

I  personally don't see why anyone would care who of the top three won gold as they all were equally bad (though their PC's says otherwise)

Just finished watching shoma n nathan's fs (in the mid of work now oops) lots of urs, surprised me a bit actually... Maybe nervousness n pressure... Anyway that was really underwhelming. (Also sorry for voicing this but was i the only one who cringe when watching nathan's feet bc damn the no-step before jumps was really, really obvious yikes)

As salty (and bitter) as I am of the judging and scores, a win is a win, and no one can take it away (Just like I still see people saying Yuzu's Olympic title was undeserved because Plushenko withdrew, like really?). Nathan won this season's GPF, just like Shoma did at last year's nationals. Even if their scores are lower than Yuzu's both times, their wins should still be recognized. Now, if people go around saying they beat Yuzu though... that's a different matter as it's untrue since he was not competing.

In the short, it looked like the Japanese judge was scoring Nathan pretty high, at almost level with/above Shoma. What's up with that? Unless I got judges mixed up yesterday. They regularly seem to shortchange Yuzu, but I didn't think they would with Shoma.

I think it's fair enough to say that they didn't skate their best. It wasn't an impressive competition. It really reminded me of who all were missing!

But a win is a win, nonetheless, and those medals are theirs. There are no terms and conditions to that.

Reminds me of football, the 'Can they do it on a cold Tuesday night in Stoke!' thing. Well no, when you're drawn to play West Brom on Sunday afternoon, difficult to do it on a cold Tuesday night in Stoke then.
