I think it's fair enough to say that they didn't skate their best. It wasn't an impressive competition. It really reminded me of who all were missing!

But a win is a win, nonetheless, and those medals are theirs. There are no terms and conditions to that.

Reminds me of football, the 'Can they do it on a cold Tuesday night in Stoke!' thing. Well no, when you're drawn to play West Brom on Sunday afternoon, difficult to do it on a cold Tuesday night in Stoke then.

Definitely true, I just wish it was a better competition for theirs and our sake :sigh:

Yeah, with you on that. It was definitely not fun, forget incredible like Yuzu pulls out of the hat for at least one of the SP/free at GPF.

Wasn't that the year Hanyu finally beat Chan for the first time? You didn't like how that competition went?

Yes, it was that time. Ok, not that bad. But still he didn't win the event. :waffle:

No, I just remembered how cute he was there. :dpooh:

Yeeeaaaah, I sort of regret getting up 20 minutes earlier than usual for this. It was rather disappointing. Shoma and Nathan's programs have a higher BV than Hope & Legacy, and yet their score was 39-40 points lower. I'd much rather see a clean skate over difficult jumps with skaters struggling to keep up with the music... And their step sequence was level 3 this time! Definitely not a great night for either of them... Ah, well. Hopefully we'll see a better showing from them in their respective Nationals.

The thing is, Nathan and Shoma had a prime opportunity to build on their momentum towards Olys here, in the absence of Yuzu and Javi (and Patrick). And they didn't really run with it.

Both of them UR a lot and should have score much less. Honestly if they were called correctly, only Kolyada and Voronov fully rotated their quads.

Go back to Shoma’s 4S and tell me it was fully rotated. It’s ridiculously UR. Kolyada could have won if the tech specialist did their job properly.

And people often remember the LP's performance more than SP.

On the other hand, I hope people could stop talking how Yuzuru's absent affect to Nathan and Shoma's today performance. Yes, it might play a small part, but no one knows if they could skate better had Yuzuru there. If anything, its the lesson they need to learn, to compete under big pressure and being favorite. Yuzuru won't be there to take all the attention for them all the time.

But that was the GPF in 2012. Oh wait that would mean the one in 2013 was the second time he beat Chan, where he actually topped the podium to start his 4-year reign.

Is this meant for me? While it's true noone can say for sure but I didn't say what I did with zero basis. Based on all the competitions they skated together since last season, they performed satisfactorily in most of the competitions they shared with him. Uno, especially. Two out of three of his worst performances since his rise were in Japan under circumstances where Hanyu had to withdraw (let's not kid ourselves here, his WD from NHK was as good as  WD from GPF). And these are the only two where his team didn't report any health issues. The third one he was ailing but it was also close on the heels of Hanyu's WD from NHK. I don't think it's too far-fetched to say there may be a pattern here. Chen's only hiccup was at this year's WC. All other competitions he's done from good to great, two of which he actually beat Hanyu with pretty great scores. I wasn't making completely baseless assumptions.

I'm not saying Hanyu is god but the guy has an effect on others and the atmosphere of a competition you can't quite deny.

Just to confuse the discussion more, if Patrick were here he could've won even with less quads ^^;

Wth... I'm starting to miss everyone lol.

I'm so bad with dates :59227c768286a__s: I just wanted to say, I didn't see a mess like today for many years.

Was Amano the tech expert?

No he wasn't-if he were the scores would have been even lower.

I'm glad that the tech panel called, this was almost a disaster of a free, so calls were well deserved (even if less than the real number of URs).

Here's a mental exercise:

1) If Amano was the tech specialist giving out calls, how many men would have cracked the 280 total point barrier?

2) If the URs in the SP were called, how many men would have cracked the 280 total point barrier?

I haven't seen so many men score under 100 TES for a while.

I read somewhere that he was. It didn't sound right after seeing the scores.

Of course, not you. There's alot of people on twitter said so. While I think it could play a small part, its far from the main reason. Nathan and Shoma skated well in SP though. What I want to say is, sooner or later, they have to face that kind of pressure, since Yuzuru won't be there until they retire. Yuzuru bombed serveral times while being favorite too, but I didnt see anyone said its because of X orY's absent. As for me, I already knew everything would go wrong the moment Yuzuru WD from NHK :smiley-sad058:

May be its their pattern, aka not skate well in Japan (Jason could join too). The same with Yuzuru when he competes in Canada/America ( and in Japan, its Osaka)

A bit underwhelming and disappointing GPF performances by the podium placers, but congratulations to the three!
I know Yuzuru must be watching and will be feeling eager to show his best because he missed it.

Actually the pressure will increase on both:

1) Nathan will get hyped in the US media even more because he won the GPF finally, which no US man has done since Evan. But scores wise, his scores have gone downwards, so it's public pressure plus internal pressure to perform. This is only going to increase leading up to Olys.

2) Shoma has pressure anyways, since he's seen as the future of the Japanese men's should Yuzu decide to stop competing someday. With Yuzu out, he was Japan's hope this competition-whether or not he could fully succeed to lead Japanese men's skating. Add in his own internal pressure to perform (because he does judge himself-let's not kid ourselves), and it's not going to decrease anytime soon before Olys, if even at Olys.
