wait, supporting foreign athletes is banned? :O

No, fan-organized fundraising is banned. For a myriad of reasons but the chief one being that most such activity is done to show support for the various K-Pop idols that are, much to the dismay of the authorities, extremely popular in China.

In any case, Chinese fanyus do so much to show their support for Yuzu already. There's no need for them to fundraise as well. They are doing enough as it is.

Thanks for the translation. Maybe I'm overly cautious but won't such open and detailed discussions provides an insight or heads-up to rivals who are training and competing to be ahead of the race with a 4A (eg. Dmitriev) ? Why not wait till Yuzu lands the ratified 4A before broadcasting such programs?

Yuzu is fully aware of the judging shenanigans in this sport, which has been intensifying in recent years. With the ability of reading the whole situation well, he knows it’s getting him nowhere to do a 5-6 jumps routine - firstly he’s not going to feed into the US narrative by joining others to chase the appointed one but more importantly, he will not compromise on artistry and his ideals of figure skating. Yet he has to differentiate himself from the rest. Hence, his conclusion of bringing 4A to win in the Beijing Olympics.

As long as the 4A is ratified in the Beijing Olympics, this will be his ‘first’ win in this Olympics edition. He will be able to account to his younger self that he has finally fufill all his childhood dreams, this being the biggest and most challenging one. It is also one that he has more control of vs  winning a gold medal (he certainly has the capabilities to go for his ‘second’ win if bias scoring is non-existent).

Contrary to some opinions shared here that there will be fairer judging at the Olympics, I am not hopeful at all (am only too glad to be proven wrong though). Nathan being unbeaten and having his name cast in stone for breaking records (WRs and having highest scores for xxx jumps) since PyeongChang Olympics shows the determination to crown a US skater as the Olympics champ (Evan Lysacek last won it in 2010) and a FS legend.

With so much human intervention, the US narrative is really close to its conclusion/completion, so it makes no sense to stop at the Olympics what has been painstakingly built up over the past (at least) four years. Plus they are getting hungrier and more impatient with each passing year, let alone wait for another Olympic cycle.

I, together with many more, share Roman Sadovsky’s view that he who lands the first ratified 4A,  a humanly impossible jump in an international competition, thus achieving a historic feat, deserves the gold medal. Does this call for (max) divine intervention for Yuzu, especially after seeing the USNats results and scorings?

Praying for the best possible outcome for Yuzu, the warrior :smiley-angelic001::smiley-angelic001::smiley-angelic001::smiley-angelic001:

Uchimura and Yuzu, match made in 4A heaven? I wonder how much they could help each other achieve if they met and compared notes?

Dmitriev is hardly a rival (he can't even land his other quads) - and no one else is even close to trying.

In any case the whole world knows Yuzu will bring 4A to the Olympics, and it's anyone's guess (including Yuzu himself) as to whether he will be able to succeed in landing it.  That is the nature of his challenge, which he had hesitate to take on for a long time but he is now committed himself to doing so.

…. Yuzuru has been jumping ‘only’ 4S and 4T in SP bcz it’s the safest bet to have clean SPs, while keeping his brand of skating. His most technically advanced version of SPs was LGC with 4Lo//4S3T 3A. None of his outing with LGC cracked 110. The thing is, he could easily go back to this layout, but he would need to sacrifice many of his intricate skating in-between elements to prepare for the jumps. We all know Zu would rather die than do 6 crossovers to get into a jump - dude barely did 6 crossovers for the entire SP!

Yes, Yuzu hinted himself that for him it's worth sacrificing those 1-2 points in BV if he can create a program with the most complex transitions and exquisite choreography instead where the jumps perfectly match the music and melt seamlessly into the choreography. And in a judging system that is anywhere near fair, he should close that point gap 5x with his other qualities.

The interesting thing about LGC was that his 4Lo was more consistent than the 4S+3T combo. For whatever reason that combination refused to work in 5 of 7 performances and cost him many points. It was only clean at NHK and GPF - the only two events where LGC scored above 100.

I always wondered why he didn't go back to the much more consistent 4T+3T like he did at SOI last year. It matches the music rhythm much better and the base value was only 0.2 points lower than of the 4S+3T. It felt like he wanted to prove himself with all might that he's capable of combos with other quads than 4T, but that didn't work out in the SP. I'm glad that he stopped pushing for more valuable quads in the short. He has been so rocksolid in that competition segment ever since.

Very interesting statistics btw:

Spoiler

In his 11 encounters with Nathan the SP placement determined the outcome of the competition 10 times:

Event

Yuzu SP

score + rank

Nathan SP

score + rank

Yuzu

FS

Nathan

FS

Winner

combined total

NHK 2016 103.89 (1st) 87.94 (2nd) 1 2 Yuzu
GPF 2016 106.53 (1st) 85.30 (5th) 3 1 Yuzu
4CC 2017 97.04 (3rd) 103.12 (1st) 1 2 Nathan
Worlds 2017 98.39 (5th) 97.33 (6th) 1 4 Yuzu
WTT 2017 83.51  (7th) 99.28 (2nd) 1 4

Nathan (2nd)

(Shoma 1st)

COR 2017 94.85 (2nd) 100.54 (1st) 1 2 Nathan
Olympics 2018 111.68 (1st) 82.27 (17th) 2 1 Yuzu
Worlds 2019 94.87 (3rd) 107.40 (1st) 2 1 Nathan
GPF 2019 97.43 (2nd) 110.38 (1st) 2 1 Nathan
Worlds 2021 106.98 (1st) 98.85 (3rd) 4 1 Nathan
WTT 2021 107.12 (2nd) 109.65 (1st) 2 1 Nathan

Stockholm Worlds was the only event, where Yuzu won the SP, but still lost the competition to Nathan.

It was also the only time since 2017 that Yuzu skated a clean SP, but didn't win gold (in international competition).

Another interesting fact: Yuzu has scored 8 times above 110 in the SP in his career (6 times in international competition), but only once against Nathan. It's really weird that Yuzu is the absolute SP king, but against Nathan he only managed to score above 100 four times in 11 events. For his standards, he made unusually lot of mistakes against him, which I suspect to be the result of the ludicrous over/underscoring and the massive pressure on him to be foot-perfect.

The freeskate placements perfectly visualize how the preference shifted towards Nathan over the years. Yuzu made about the same number of mistakes before and after the system change, his skating quality has even improved, but it was Nathan's clean skates and extreme scoring boost that yeeted him to first place in every event, although Yuzu should have won the FS in Saitama and at WTT last year. At WTT even win the SP and combined total imo despite (or because of) the illusion 3A.

Let's hope that Yuzu can deliver a squeaky clean Rondo in Beijing. That program deserves a great performance on the biggest stage :cheer:
