  1. I'd be interested to see data on longevity of ladies skaters who could turn senior their first Olympics right at the age cutoff (Yulia Lipnitskaya, Alina Zagitova, Polina Edmunds, Kimmie Meissner, Tara Lipinski, off the top of my head, basically ladies who would be affected by the rule change) versus the ones who just missed the age cutoff (Yuna Kim, Mao Asada, and others that aren't as famous I'm sure) acting as a control group. Maybe that will give us a starting point regarding whether the age change would be a good idea? @wingman whaddya think? Not sure how to crawl a list of skaters, though, so maybe we could only look at skaters who have gone to the Olympics at some point. A lot of skaters lose motivation after going to the Olympics (and maybe medaling), though, so not sure how to account for that/or whether or not we even should.
  2. It's probably just a cut...Japan is usually very good at showcasing all skaters...sometimes they have separate commercials for each skater
  3. I think it can be a good thing. For example, in gymnastics, you have to turn 16 to compete in seniors by Jan 1 of that year. It used to be 14, then 15, so a little bit similar to what we have now in figure skating. And when they changed it to 16, suddenly there are women who are competing will into their 20's and go to multiple Olympics. The winners are still pretty young but the longevity of gymnasts' careers increased by a lot. So to many people it was a very healthy change. If we could see this in figure skating, then that may be a positive change...
  4. I remember from their TSL interview that Javi said he asked her out while he was training with Morozov in New Jersey, and Miki came around once in a while to do her show...
  5. This looks like a Vogue shoot she did once. Beautiful music!
  6. Oh no!! I hope you get better soon. We've missed and noticed you being gone....best wishes for a speedy recovery
  7. the pictures they chose are on point
  8. I think Zhenya is too slow for him as a partner, as are her spins. So Yuzu would have to slow down so she can keep up, which would be sad...
  9. Got my new blades but still haven't mounted them we were gonna mount them this Thursday but apparently someone borrowed the screwdriver from the rink and hasn't returned it yet and so we couldn't mount them. We'll mount them next time I have lessons because we'll have to temporarily mount them and try them out before adjusting if necessary and doing a permanent mount The sad part is I feel like I've just gotten my scratch spin stabilized, and I'm making slow improvements on my sit spin...but I imagine I would need to stabilize them again (it always takes a while to get a "feel" of where to balance when things change i guess, although maybe it won't be as hard as I'm fearing). I've been making slow improvements on my sit spin...every time I "discover" something new I'm like "wait I discovered the breakthrough issue that is gonna make this spin super easy and always centered blahblah" and of course, it's never that but each thing does help improve it little by little...recently I discovered that if you arch your back in your spin entry then it's much easier to arch your back when you sit into the spin...it didn't finally make them work but I can feel that they're getting closer
  10. Why would they do that to their top and like, only ladies' singles skater?
  11. I think it's the hips. His are more muscular/thicker!
  12. Yeah, TBH it gives judges a lot more judging leeway, because when we ask "Why didn't this jump that hits all 6 of the + GOE bullets get +3? Why did Judge #X give a +1 for this decent jump?" they can easily come up with some longer winded but still valid under these rules scenario where oh, the jump wasn't high enough so it didn't activate the bonus round, blah blah like a bad video game lmao
  13. Um, considering the travesty in GOE scoring for some skaters, I'm envisioning a worst-case scenario where a skater could have transitions in and out of a program, right on the music beat, etc, but told they don't have enough "height" or "effortlessness" and end up getting like +1 out of 5? it's not like "good height" is an objective bullet. Well, with this criteria, Satoko would technically not get any more than 3/5 on any jumping pass no matter how many tanos and transitions she adds. But then, certain skaters like Zhenya would not have her tanos "count" because her jumps are not effortless. (Of course, whether they are and whether they are judged to be are two separate things...) Would they release whether or not a skater "passes" the first threshold or not? I'm imagining cases where a skater hits every bullet except for one of the first 3 and then gets like a +1 on a tano'd jump with perfect takeoff and landing and spread eagles in and out, and we'll have to play guessing games as to what exactly the judges were thinking when they scored it...
  14. Lol if you guys post videos, I and maybe others here can try to give advice. I'm not very good at skating, but I think it'll help me learn as well Caveat, of course, being that I'm not a coach and I'm not very good at skating
  15. Heh. "Yuzu, had you not been injured maybe I'll call you the GOAT"
  16. It's not hate if it's criticism...even if you disagree with the criticism. And I happen to think "I wish American media would profile skaters who are not American more, and with less bias" is constructive criticism, even if you think it's okay for them to do so. So I don't see the hate. For many of us, American media interests are very LOUD and it's hard to ignore them even if we want to, which is why you might see people criticize more than you would, say, a niche radio station in Nowheresville.
  17. I didn't doubt Johnny said that, lol. And I only recall Scott saying "Dick button is the greatest of all time" when asked if Yuzu could be the greatest of all time. So if you've seen any clip where he changes his mind, I'd love to see it.
  18. Really? Can you point to where NBC, CBC, Icenetwork etc. have called Yuzu the GOAT? Scott Hamilton has steadfastly maintained that he is not. Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir never make that statement either as far as I can remember? Only Tanith Belbin has said "Why not?" when she was asked the question but did she actually acknowledge it afterwards? The article was good, but it wasn't so positively gushing from the way I read it, and it focused more on his fans than him. (The article even states that the story is about obsession -- namely, Yuzu's fans obsession with him -- and not really about his skating. The title of the online version of the article was positive (calling him "Michael Jackson on ice") but in print they toned it down ("Icon Stumbles On the Road To Glory"), and they focused on a few really weird quotes and bios of random fans (including a girl who moved to Japan because she was a Yuzu fan, and it was taken out of the print article perhaps because the quotes were taken out of context or just because it sounded very creepy/weird). I don't know about you, but I don't think we should have such low standards in reporting that anytime a newspaper in the US reports on a non-American that it's considered amazing. Especially when said non-American is considered by many many in the sport to be the "Greatest of All Time." Japanese media is much better at comprehensive reporting than the US, and consequently Japanese skating audiences know/appreciate far more than their own skaters. If you watch Japanese skating news, they like to do graphical analyses all the time and they frequently highlight things like which skater has which quad (and Nathan/Boyang/non-Japanese skaters consistently feature in them). They talk about international skaters all the time. And if you watch Japanese ice shows, they invite American/Western skaters like Jason, Carolina, Javi, Nathan, Ashley, all the time. In contrast, US Stars on Ice almost never invites Asian skaters (has it ever? I don't watch it religiously) nor have Canadian SOI shows. I've definitely noticed that recreational skaters in the US, when they talk about watching skating, they only talk about American skaters, even in fields where American skaters aren't very strong (i.e. ladies). One possible reason is that the US almost never reports on any skater outside of the US unless they're forced to (i.e. when they're broadcasting the Olympics and the winners are clearly not American), which is not the viewers' faults but isn't it sad that they won't be able to appreciate the beauty of a wide variety of athletes just because they're not American? And this is your opinion -- but I think you should tone it down a little, because other people may have differing opinions that are just as valid.
