Knickknacks: General Skating Chat

  1. Started by Deliverpooh,

Though the list of ladies who have done the triple axel is ever growing, I am still always excited when a woman accomplishes this jump. Rika Kihira even did a triple axel- triple toe at the JGP. And in juniors we now have a lady who has a quad sal in her free program. My question is, who else do you think will start jumping triples axels and quads?

  2. This topic is about posting other skaters' program announcements for the upcoming season. Medvedeva announced that her FS next will be to 'Memoirs of a Geisha'.

Just occurred to me to play a game for AC. I’ll be at the event so I might be slow in getting results. Someone else can do results if people don’t want to wait for me. Rules If you make any changes to your predictions, please edit your original reply rather than posting an additional one. I suggest predicting a top 4. If someone withdraws, I’ll bump everyone you predicted below that person up a spot. Scoring 1 point if your skater ends up within 1 place of your prediction. 3 points for every correct placement 2 points for every correct answer to bonus questions These are the entrants http:…

  5. I'd like to share this site that you may find useful: https://skate-calendar.com/ There's a color-coded calendar, with competitions entries and schedule when you click on an event. But the best feature is the 'search by skater' function, that will show you all of the upcoming competitions and ice shows for the skater you search. I think it's particularly interesting for keeping up with skaters you like but don't follow religiously!

  6. Which of the six is the most difficult? You can discuss all or any of the disciplines you like.

  8. Hello fellow satellites, hobby prophets, fortune tellers in training and oracles to be – returning ones from last season and new ones alike! I hope you all brought your tea leaves, dice and randomizers, as it is time for a new round of our Planet Hanyu Grand Prix Prediction Game! The rules are rather simple: 1.) Participate 2.) Have fun That is to say, things are basically going to stay pretty much the same as last year! (For those who want to check back with those rules again or didn’t participate, here is the link to the old thread - other then that, don't be afraid to ask if anything is unclear). A few addition…

  9. Maria Sotskova is leaving Elena Buyanova and is starting to train with Sokolovskaya. The reason for the split is lack of mutual understanding.

  10. Started by makebelieveup,

We all know how dangerous a 4axel is, but to hear from an actual skater about its potential effect on the skater it is makes me terrified for Yuzu. I agree with Maxim that this sport shouldnt be made so that in order to defeat your opponent you have to break yourself in the process. Would Yuzu have felt the need to attempt the quad lutz if he weren't put in that position in 2017 or thinking he must gain all three new quads next season in order to stay competitive? I think thats what making me lose my initial enjoyment as the sport evolves. And I feel like there is always a disclaimer that needs to be made whenever I make this statement, that I am by no mean a…

Rewatching 2002 Olympics. Anyone remember when Scott Hamilton screeched during Yagudin's LP "He's conceding the long program to Goebel". Yagudin was a unanimous 1st in the free skate and Goebel's ordinals ranged from 3rd to 5th Scott Hamilton during 1994 Olympics about G&G vs. M&D "It's passion vs. perfection" after G&G made 3? mistakes. Also, passion isn't part of any of the scores Joe Inman in his TSL interview: [About Hanyu] 10:45 I never get the feeling that he understands what he’s skating to. 15:08 If you don’t have music that has a lot of variety, how can you interpret the music?[so he penalizes if he doesn't l…

  12. What are your thoughts on the 2018-19 season? Which skater is most improved? Which program did you like the most? What would you like to see next season? I realized halfway through that the post-Olympic season is always a mess, and I should disentangle myself from skating for a bit Men: I thought Boyang Jin improved his PCS quite a bit, and is an excellent skater now in his practices. He still needs to pull it all together in the competitions, though, but given what was happening this season, it's understandable. Hope next season is much better. Shoma Uno didn't show huge improvements, but he did perform his SP different to…

  13. Started by hoodie axel,

In your opinion! Just for singles', if we include 6.0, I think the best ever choreographer is Sandra Bezic, and Lori Nichol is easily second. If not, it becomes interesting, since I think Lori Nichol is first, and David Wilson second Will add links to argue later, but what's your opinion?

  14. Hi! This might be a long shot but if anyone has subscriptions to these online video players with commentary and they are willing to let me borrow the account to download/archive videos from this season, that would be really amazing! Please let me know, thanks ETA: I have Eurosport player now, thanks! If anyone has CBC (with commentary) or NBC and can let me borrow it, please let me know

It's officially off season. It's a good time to catch up on those years I missed and reminisce about those great performances. What are your top 10 performances from each year? You can pick across all disciplines and segments, including galas. If people are interested, maybe we can compile a list for a streaming party.

  16. As a fascinating discussion started in the Layout thread, we've decided to move all the relevant posts here, so as to facilitate the discussion on jumps, their landings, etc when it comes to all the skaters that might peak your interest, and not just Yuzuru. Thank you @Fresca , and everyone, for the fascinating discussion and hopefully it'll continue! Edit by Yatagarasu ____________________ Nathan's wobbly landings (and even Boyang's wobbly landings too) are due to bad body alignment. They are small and they rotate very fast but they do not control their speed and power in the landing enough. In short, less control if yo…

  17. I have been wanting to start this thread to extensively discuss about the role of each aspect of the scoring like program component scores (PCS) and grade of execution points in figure skating and how they are being evaluated by ISU judges. One of the main reasons I want to have this discussion is because I have been seeing way too many people becoming used to the way that ISU judges have been scoring PCS based on the technical element scores (TES) that it actually has an effect on their own way of understanding the scoring system. I'm going to give a recent example like World Championships 2019. I have seen many people come to an agreement that Yuzu should have received…

I wanted to collect videos and articles comparing elements/programs side by side or over layed so you can directly compare them. Lutz This one gives stats on quad lutzes performed by Nathan and Yuzu http://perform-live.com/blog/video-analysis-of-figure-skating/231-quad-lutz-what-else.html Not sure how informative it is since it's so old but this also has these types of pics of Nathan's jumps from the Olympics https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/02/16/sports/olympics/nathan-chen-mens-figure-skating.html Lutz by Boyang http://perform-live.com/blog/video-analysis-of-figure-skating/216-interactive-a…

We’re at the last big competition of the year so I figured we’d do another game because, why not? All the entries are in the second post of this thread. https://planethanyu.com/topic/906-2019-world-team-trophy-11-1404/ If you want to make changes, please edit your original post rather than making a new one. 3 Points for each correct placement. 1 point if you’re within 1 spot 1. List the top 3 combined totals for men 2. List the top 3 combined totals for ladies 2 Points for each correct placement (figured they’re smaller fields so should be worth less than for the singles disciplines) 3. Which country’s…

Here are the entries for worlds. Remember that the Russian ladies team is Alina Zagitova, Sofia Samodurova, and Evgenia Medvedeva NOT Konstantinova http://www.isuresults.com/events/fsevent03111664.htm Rules You have until the start of the first event on March 18 to get your final predictions in. Hydroblade created an event somewhere with times in your zone but I’m blind and can’t find it at the moment so I’ll have to link it later. I know how alluring that grand prize of “nothing” is but I feel that the honor system will be enough to keep everyone from changing predictions after the deadline. If you make any changes t…
