Hello all, I just read through the commemts as I could not watch the competition live, and I have a probably very stupid question:

what is backloading?

it means putting most or all of your jumps in the second half of the program (for extra points)

Ah!

Thank you!!:thanks:

Sigh. Crime against figure skating.

Anyway, I could probably write twenty paragraphs about everything that's wrong with this result but honestly, I cannot even be bothered. They've sapped everything out of me with this nonsense.

The thing that genuinely makes me laugh is the whole oh we want overall skaters. No, no you don't. As we see time and time again. Actually while the state of the men is slightly better, this same bull exists there as well. We can see that in this Olympics too, with Yuzuru's scores vs the others. We got the right outcome in the end, but we very easily could have ended up with it being all wrong too. And the new system? It's just going to make it ten times worse. Sigh.

I don't know if we're going to get improvements without true neutrality in judging (assuming that's possible). It's not like the issues we have now didn't exist under 6.0. Or previous systems, as even compulsory figures were used politically.

Definitely. I think the best thing one can hope for is limiting that influence. I don't think we can get true neutrality but I think the new system of lower BV + GOE 5s will just open it all up for even more fudging. I also think that what with everything, there's a high chance they'll probably scrap the 10% as it is now.

Wait, what, they didn't show the last 3 skaters in each discipline? Why not, when that's what determines medals!?

They have 4 hours of Olys coverage in the morning ( from 9:30am -1:30 pm KST) and its always end before the last 3 skaters. For the men, its the last 5 skaters. My father almost threw the remote away when they cut it in the middle of Boyang's perf. For today, they cut it right before Alina's. In the afternoon coverage they will announce the results. The only discipline they show till the end is ice dance. As for pairs, they had delay broadcast and showed everything. Tbh my country have no interest in winter olympic and the broadcast channel don't know much about FS and skating order so . Also there's alot of hilarious comment that make me want to jump into the TV

Frontloaded programs, oh how I love those and missed them. Do we smell the return of serpentine, circular and straight-line footwork sequences?

Since we're on the topic of ladies, maybe the backloading 10% bonus could help increase some longevity. With the increased GOE, assuming judges judge correctly, a well done 3Lz3T combo in the second half could garner decent points. Full backloading, while not easy, is something that 20ish year old female skaters can look into. Training a 4S at age 20 might not be possible.

Anyways, I just wondered if Med ever knew she might lose Olys to Zagi, after Europeans, and just still skated clean despite knowing that her chances of winning a gold was under 40% (just heading to PC, not day of competition). If yes, my heart goes out to her.

Yes, that was a blast! Though I do think that if they make changes, they might not do away with the bonus completely, but rather, just limit it. Say, 3 jumping passes get it, but no more. There is so much complaining about backloading, there is a big article in USA Today about the wrong Russian winning and gaming the system, that I will really be surprised if they make no moves at all.

Who knows, as they say the wheel keeps turning so one day we may end up where we started

(*sets everything on fire, throws salt*)

I know my luck simply ran out after the first three disciplines went the way I wanted. Men most importantly!!!

It’s true Evgenia doesn’t jump with ease currently, and I doubt her GOE at the best of times. But I was inspired by her last night. Her personality and mentality are so winning. She grew the Anna Karenina program into exactly the vehicle I hoped it would be. I was genuinely moved.

Alina fills me with gloom. The showiness of her program, combined with her rawness, has never been my thing, but at times this season I could get swept up in it. Last night I couldn’t. I’m skeptical how she will evolve. Med always had that kernel of soulfulness, even with the ridiculous programs. Alina seems more about shallow bravura. Maybe her youth makes it unfair to expect more. Though she jumps well, obviously, for me Kaetlyn Osmond actually stole a bit of thunder in that regard, by nailing like never before. I have a preference for her kind of height, distance and runout.

Had Kaetlyn faltered, Tiny Queen would’ve been on the podium! As it is, I agree with the placements, and will be able to rewatch the third and fourth finishers with great pleasure.

Caro in front of Kaori—I’ll roll my eyes and move on. Nice to see Dabin do so well, though she was getting some hometown boost. The quietness of her skating is both a strength and a weakness.

I don’t hold it against Mirai she wasn’t able to repeat—sometimes a moment is too big to recreate. I hope the spots at Worlds will turn out more appropriately this year: we need three for Japan; two is fine for USA.

Gabby I don’t even know how to talk about. It’s devastating. She clearly wanted to hit the eject button and fly off into outer space once it went wrong. Unlike Pogo, I think the audience sympathy made her even more miserable.

They do have well-rounded skaters in their group, though. Alena Kostornaia is, in my opinion, an amazing example of someone who can backload like the best of them and retain a lot of artistic sensitivity to musical nuances. She even makes me appreciate Adios Nonino, which is not really my favorite piece of music. But Alena came to Eteri later in her development, much like Tarakanova, who also has a lot of talent but in a wilder, more untamed way.

Alina also came to Eteri not so long ago. So different girls got their foundation in different schools but now it seems that if you want to be the best, you must go to Eteri and she'll train you only after seeing your skating. But it's not Eteri's fault that nowadays most young talents want to go to her and other coaches don't have such a success.

So, Med says she is trying it again in 2022. Well, good luck, but she is already beaten, she is not the judges favorite anymore. And there are other 15 yo, waiting for their turn. If she was from another country, it would be different

Yeah, well, that hasn't stopped Tara from being mean either, so...

Oh, so, than it's fine, it's okay to bully, ok then :disappointed:

Omg I've never been so moved by Evgenia ! That was just beautiful.

Thank you Zhenia. I can't wait to see how you'll evolve in that sport in the next four years.

But first, heal and get some rest !
