[2018] Olympic Games Ladies Free Skating

Featured Replies

Checked the resuls before I watched the re-run of the event, very happy to see Kaetlyn on the podium!

The results this time were really exciting because ultimately no one knew who would get gold between the two Russian ladies, Evgenia and Alina. The judges scoring both their free skates, 156.65, (exactly tied to the decimal points) deems that either Alina or Evgenia could've gotten the gold medal equally, so the main battle was in the SP. I saw Alina win the Junior GPF live in Marseille when Evgenia won the Senior GPF ladies' event, back then watching both in separate divisions I didn't expect the rivalry to rise this soon. I admit back a few seasons when Evgenia dominated everything —it definitely wasn't as exciting to watch as now because there was no one to challenge her. Hope their rivalry will continue on and become a healthy competitive bond like that of Yuzu and Javi!

My heart broke for her with that reaction to winning tbh; It shouldn't be anyone's reaction to winning goddamn OGM; the poor girls only 15! I hope people are kind to her

Adelina was only 17 too... and Yulia was only 15 too... Tara was 15 too....  didn't stop people from being mean

Bradie was the best US lady  She is so unknown in the international competition, but is now #9 in the olympics. I think that's a great achievement

I think it's interesting that it's usually the free skates that people remember and determine who they think the rightful winner is like here or pairs (didn't pay attention to dance), but (though Nathan won the FS) Yuzu made such a big impression both days that even with mistakes in FS his win is undisputed (unless you're an uber of someone else). Hurrah.

Looking at the long programs, he was the most clean of them all  Shoma fell on his first jump, Javier popped and his jumps in general looked weird (but nobody cares about the bronze medalists anyway, they just look at who was first and second), Boyang fell too. Chen was too far away that people would look on YouTube for his performance

Yeah, well, that hasn't stopped Tara from being mean either, so...

Ok, after a good sleep and a bit if reading interviews and watching post competition footage I feel better :)

Good to see sportsmanship between the two top ladies, it reminds me how great athletes are! :bow::bow:

A few additional notes: to me Kaori looked a bit slower than usual but she managed to land her jumps and her breakthrough this season was really something no one had seen it coming! Kudos to her and her jumps are soooooo beautiful to watch.:tumblr_inline_n18qr5lPWB1qid2nw: Caro's opening Lutz was beautiful too, too bad she had troubles on the other jumps but she has twice the age of her competitors so she's amazing

Satoko was lovely from start to finish and her jumps were probably the best I've seen from her this season, I have some real hope she can improve even further (and I'm glad she overcame the troubles she had at 4CC). :tumblr_inline_n18qraikFP1qid2nw:Camerawork didn't do her spiral justice tho...:waffle:

I'm sad for Karen's jumps, so much wasted potential. Mirai managed to fight despite her initial mistake and goes home with the team medal so I guess she's stil very happy, and Bradie made a good debut, too, considering no one had even thought of her getting here at the start of the season :tumblr_inline_ncmif5EcBB1rpglid:

Poor Gabby  :tumblr_inline_ncmif7esGm1rpglid: Yay Kaetlyn! Not my fave but when she's on her jumps are beautiful. Lilibet did her best and Dabin was lovely:tumblr_inline_mfy936EPNF1qid2nw:

I thought Alina was quite good in the first half of the program, less rushed than other times. Zhenya didn't had the Lz called, as I thought, so it makes me a bit less sad:gaah: tbh I'm surprised she doesn't get more +3 on her Lo, if judges want to give +3 that's imo the jump that usually deserves it the most... but I guess it's a minor issue in the big scheme of scoring :drama:

My predictions went down the drain but that's hardly new :P

Congrats to all the medalists, and now everyone can have a bit of fun :tumblr_inline_ncmif5EcBB1rpglid:

(Still, imo the best and happiest and most emotional podium of Olympic games goes to men:10636614:)

Really? but she was like this getting on the stage ):

Oh, I didn’t see them show that part on Fuji! Phew! :tumblr_inline_mqt4grU8ua1qz4rgp: I got so worried.

One more thing, before I let go of this event.

If I were Tutberidze, and assuming that as a coach she and her team would like to develop well-rounded, long-lasting skaters (also assuming her past with Lipnitskaya and Pitkeev were outliers), this is why I would not be entirely happy with this result.

I would imagine, she is more than aware of the areas in which both Medvedeva and Zagitova still need to develop.

I'd imagine her telling Medvedeva that she needs to improve, and Medvedeva actually starts improving only to watch her dominance suddenly got surpassed. What does Tutberidze tell her now?

I'd also imagine her telling Zagitova that she needs to improve. But when she just won over the recently dominating skater so easily and repeatedly, what does Tutberidze tell her now?

And wow, what does this mean for the rest of the skaters? I don't necessarily want to know.

I'm letting this go *release a pigeon into the air*

I wonder if Brian Orser should stop coaching women and just focus on men? First Chartrand and now Daleman. Although at least in the K&C with Daleman, he tried to comfort her a bit. Her primary coach sat there like he was made of stone.

Mmmm- I've been thinking about this since Raf and Nathan last week - I'm not someone who would welcome too much public consolation - in their shoes I'd be trying to keep it bottled up til I was away from the cameras and hugs and commiseration would tip me over the edge, so its possible that it may not be as it looks to an outsider - might be helping to keep the stiff upper lip in public.  Makes me want to ban the k&c.
