[2018] Olympic Games Ladies Free Skating

Once again the OBM is the happiest person. In 3 disciplines, the gold and silver is around one point gap, except for men. And that's the only discipline that didn't have any WR.

A little biased and mean here so tune out if you must, but: Double standards in expertise needed to get WR programs.

I don't care if one is a veteran skater or not, on paper and in scores it is the pinnacle of skating and its bonkers how I differently view the pinnacle of ladies and mens. Perhaps I'm just too biased and subjective.

It’s not a completely bad thing though—all of Yuzu’s records are totally real and everyone knows it. Even the haters.

Well I'm bitter because Yuzuru didn have the WR for his SP, but he won gold and happy with his performance so I'm happy too. Its just a bit funny when we saw the final results and the winning margin in all 4 events.

Anyway, Evegenia said she will continue for next Olys. Go for it girl, and get better program. I'm really looking forward to see her in the next quad.

Zhenya just said in the interview, she is going for the next Olympics)

I hope to see both her and waka there

I was hoping for Med to get gold and Satoko for Bronze. Oh well, sad to see her so sad.

Did I make a good choice of not waking up, or did I not?

Reading the comments, I did.

Off to watch the performances now.

In retrospect, (for my sake, still sad for the skaters) boy am I glad my favourite ladies didn't make it to this Olympics.

Can I just not have any more favourite after Zu, please :snonegai:My other favourite seems to be lacking Zu's total 'You'll want to judge against me, but watch me make you judge for me, instead'. Which they shouldn't have to, to begin with. Just that I cannot stand watching this sport because of that.

Anyone posted this yet? From the press conference:

I need to stop lurking here. Hopefully my last post.

Its also interesting how different the men's top skaters and ladies' top 2 contenders are. For men's it's trying to peak with a clean program and not letting pressure get to you, but for ladies it's another playing field since the anointed top two have clean-ish programs and mentality in the bag - really seriously came down to the judging.

I'm proud of Alina and Zhenya, good job girls!   I think both were nervous, Alina put a good fight after a slip on the first jump (I'm really impressed she held it together after like all the press put a gold on her neck after SP), not her best skate though and poor Zhenya :sigh: The happiest girl today is Kaetlyn it seems... I feel like it's first podium with hard feelings for me from all the FS events.

Long post incoming.

Toth. Those two falls were unfortunate, but as with her SP, I thought she embodied Carmen well. The last pistol-to-head was a bit eh, tho.

Tursynbaeva. I thought she actually carried the music (and this is such a hard music to carry, why do people skate to this?) better after she fell. Go heal, tiny one.

Sotskova. Definitely better than the SP, but the girl skate at the pace of the music, I guess. So zzzzzzzz. Still, that was a good one.

(this is where I asked whether it is a blessing or a curse that the spiral sequence was removed from the ladies' FS. I mean, there were some ugly spirals there)

Chen. I cannot be the only one who finds it amusing that the other Chen is notorious for his lack of artistry (in his program, not the supposed potential), and this one is too overflown by it, she cannot tame her wild, wild jumps. Her jumps are too uncontrolled.

Tennell. 2 step-outs, but otherwise, jumps are fine. Spins are also not terrible. It would have been much better if she hadn't go with a princessy program/music. She should have taken something more 'athletic', since she looked so awkward trying to portray a princess here. That expression on stsq... Did she turn into the stepmother or the evil duke, perhaps? She is like the less charming version of Gracie Gold. That's not a praise.

Daleman. Who would have guessed that her 3T3T-step-out was going to be her best jump element? That was devastating. She went visibly slower after the 1st fall and looked like she was about to burst into tears after the 2nd (This is where I commend Tursynbaeva for not losing her focus after a fall). No TCC magic for her, I guess.

Choi. I'm sorry, her dress is better than Lipnitskaya's, thank you very much. Even the blue tone is different. I like Choi's better. Choi definitely could go faster, but except the first 3Lz, her jumps are light and airy (like Mai's), and this time no visible URs. I said she is slower, but definitely not as slow as Sotskova. And yet, her PCS is lower. *grumble grumble*

Nagasu. What was that 1st jump?? And a popped lutz. Kudos for still smiling despite it all, tho.

Miyahara. (I enjoy her more when she is not competing against Mai or Wakaba. Me @ me what even!!!). This is what it looks when a skater is totally committed to her program and choreography. Her 3Lzs and 3Ts have improved; the rest still look like they were barely 10cm off the ice. And less PRs. Still robbed in PCS (I mean, again I feel her PCS is right, just that others are given too much! I'm becoming a broken record)

Kostner. No 3-3, missing 1 combo, 2 stumbles. And in PCS, Miyahara delivered just about the same skills and quality, with a better program. And yet. I wonder how long Kostner will stay in competitions.

Sakamoto. Not the best of this program. She performed it better at JNats and 4CC. Still a joy to watch. One stumble, and only 1 (questionable for edge) Lz plus less GOEs are why she is below Miyahara in TES, I guess.

(Ah, Russian spectators apologists (I remember us trashing the crowd during Euro Pairs, when they cheered right after J/C score revealing they are off the podium), we were right. As spectators you guys are nasty, and it has nothing to do with where the competition is being held.)

Zagitova. The only things I am going to repeat about what I think about this program of her are: 1) the missing of the music cue is even more pronounced once she made a slight mistake in the tech (that opening combo), and 2) I'd be exuberant if I never have to watch this program ever again.

Osmond. Since the only other black swan we had was Zagitova's SP, this one looked mighty better in comparison. Apart from that flutz which also had a dodgy landing, her jumps were among the best today. Still doesn't deserve that higher of a PCS than Miyahara, tho.

Medvedeva. Programs overbrimming with choreographically unnecessary transitions will never win me over, neither would the ones filled with miming (that's partly why Kaori's FS, as lovely as she is, also doesn't win me over). And Medvedeva is the pioneering force behind such program, and so, yeah. That said, this was the best she skated this program. But for that flutz not being called and for PCS that high, I just can't feel bad for her. I mean, kudos for her skating like that while still injured, but she got what she got.

About the podium. Life sure isn't fair, is it? I mean, it indeed doesn't feel fair that after fighting for 2-3 years for her dominance, Medvedeva is just so casually surpassed like that. And it sure has way more to do with the fudging than the skaters themselves. I feel so conflicted, because she to a degree also owed her dominance to fudging, so, yeah. Life isn't fair, but it sure has a way to reveal some super painful lessons. Judging, on the other hand, is supposed to be fair, and look at it! In ladies, rounded skaters get screwed over the most.

I am also going to say, the comparison of 'Zagitova is to Medvedeva what Chen is to Zu' annoys me a lot. Medvedeva is nowhere near Yuzu in anything. I have to deal with you people gush about equating them a lot, so just for this one post, just this one, deal with me telling you that I find that insulting to Zu. There.

Good to hear this (also stupidly hope for a change of a choreographer), though it will be hard with all the juniors coming up in the next couple of seasons, but will be interesting to see how she and (hopefully) Alina develops.
