[2017] GP Skate America - Ladies SP & FS

Featured Replies

I know a lot of people dislike Satoko's skating bc of her PR and UR issues, but given her struggles with injuries lately and all of that pressure, she skated AMAZINGLY today and showed absolutely no nerves. She deserves to be an Olympian at least once, IMO, and she just made a solid case for that. I'm happy for her win, congrats Satoko!

So does this mean Higuchi gets to go the the Finals? Because then there'd still be a skater I can all-out root for! She's the lady I'm behind this season. The first lady I've ever been throwing my chips in for at all, really...

Russia sure is coming on pretty strong this year, even for the men's, although not under the same criteria as the ladies (since the ladies are there purely because they are dominant). If the Olys are going to go by a more traditional pattern, which I really hope it will, the unpredictable turnout for this year's GPF in terms of finalists (for the men's at least) makes for a pretty exciting one in itself. :)

Tech issues aside, Miyahara deserves her win, right? If that's the case, I'm glad she did because she really needed it. And also because thanks to her winning, Higuchi now has a shot at the GPF podium. I really hope she remains together because this would be the biggest comp for her since last season's WC. And her very first GPF to boot. And with her as the only Japanese rep this year in an event hosted in Japan, the pressure's gotta be steep. She's been skating well this season so far but she has yet to prove she's able to skate under very high pressure. Really hope she's able to because it'd make for good experience for the upcoming fight at Nats.

But all in all, with the top ladies in together with Higuchi herself, the GPS turned out as well as one could hope for, for the ladies. Here's hoping Medvedeva heals well enough to skate.

if you ask me Kaori deserves the win.. Satton deserves podium but.... well that's just me and I'm not the judges so :slinkaway:

Oh, okay. Reputation still plays a role, i guess. It always will. World silver medalist making her comeback after a long sideline and skating clean in not just one but both skates? I guess that was good enough for the judges. I have a feeling if she were less clean, she might not even be on the podium, or she'd just be a bronze, so as long as she does, which she did, they were willing to overlook some issues and give her the gold. Fits their MO either way, since they do this in the men's field as well (and not just the rest, they've done it for hanyu before as well. not so much now but definitely when he was younger).

I think it's my worst ever predictions but I dont care as long as Wakaba goes to the GPF :smiley-happy085:

I’m conflicted. I feel bad that Ashley had to wd cus she was hurt but happy that Wakababy got in.

I’m excited for the GPF now. :tumblr_inline_n18qr5AMus1qid2nw:

UR  calls.aside, can I be happy that finally some japanese ladies are getting scores?! Like where were you scores all the past several competitions?

UR calls aside, Satoko is a gorgeous skater, and she's the one who almist singlehandedly carried japan's pride in ladies event since Sotchi by winning world titles and GP titles - since Mao and Kanako struggled so much.

That and the fact that she's back at her best level so quickly after her jorrible injury and coming back to the ice... She totally deserves that spot, imho.

Yes Mai and Kaori are absolutely amazing, but they still need to mature a little bit in the components compared to Satoko, and their time will come.

All in all, the next years are going to be great for japanese ladies !

Did I just see a chocolate bar say on Twitter that usfs a should give one of its spots to Japanese ladies?! Well I know it is sarcasm at SA results, but...

This was definitely the most unexpected podium of the Grand Prix ladies, at least for me, but I was happy that medals were spread around a bit more. How nice for Kaori and Bradie, who both suddenly have Olympic buzz about them. Bradie is an unexpected real contender, not in the last place because the more established ladies all have issues. And Kaori is just great. Never thought I'd root for her more than for Mai, but there you go. I like her programs better too.

And then Satoko: what a way to come back! She and Anna were big question marks at the start of this season, but were Anna has only gone further into misery, Satoko just won a Grand Prix.

I've just watched everyone and oh my god, Satoko and Kaori made me tear up... :tumblr_inline_n18qr5lPWB1qid2nw:

And Waka is in! I am so excited for her, I still hade hope and refused to believe she wouldn't make it to the GPF after IDF and I am so so happy for her :tumblr_inline_ncmifaymmi1rpglid:

Ashley though, so heartbreaking, why would they interview her there when she was obviously so devastated?... Please rest well!

I really felt for Ashley and I hope she makes a full recovery in time for Nationals.  I wish more of those on the injured list would follow her example and get better instead of trying to forge on regardless- at least stay out of the galas damnit- looking at you Evgenia.

I know everyone quite correctly criticises Satoko for her jump technique and I'm sad that all her work doesn't seem to be effective in remedying the problem, but apart from the jumps I love her skating, she's a pleasure to watch and I'm glad to see her back with two clean skates.  It's not as though she's the only one out there with this problem but still scoring well.   I'm delighted that Kaori did so well and thrilled that Wakaba gets to the GPF.

Finally finished watching the FS. I wish Ashley a speedy recovery. Its must be terrible for her to WD in the middle of performance. I couldn't believe some people said she's faking the injury or scared of Bradie.

Once again, I would have Kaori in first. Not a fan of her LP and the miming, but her jumps and speed are great.

I'm glad Sima skate well, Plushenko seem to be a nice coach ( but please, throw that jacket away).

I wish Gabby would go back to her last year's FS.

I like Satoko and really root for her comeback, but Idk how to feel when I saw her TES. Her 3lz3t got 11 points and Polina's got 11.5 pts. The difference is 0.5 points, and when I watch their combo at the same time, I feel its unfair for Polina. People ranted so much when Alina won over Wakaba, but when its come to Satoko, suddenly its ok ? Since when its unacceptable with generous PCS but not with TES ?

In protocol, only Karen and Xiang got UR. I though SA would give some benefit of doubt to their National champ, but not, her PCS was even lower than Bradie. I feel Karen would be in Mirai's situation back in 2014....
