[2022] Winter Olympic Games (04.02-20.02) - Practice, Fluff and all the In-betweens

Kamila looks gawky - she’s not graceful or powerful or elegant.  She flails about, which is probably partly due to the usual….let’s call it ‘busy’ ….choreography inflicted on all team T skaters.  How to squeeze max points out of a skating programme - it’s easy if you ignore the flow of the music  and don’t mind if it looks choppy and messy.  I’ve gone on about it at length before.  They pick and mix moves and steps with no thought for the shape or fluidity of the music.

Absolutely, the only thing I appreciate about her skating is her flexibility, makes certain aspects of her spins look nice. Other than that she's so flat to watch when performing

It would appear that these pictures were taken when Yuzu was coincidentally skating past Jun and Brian. I wonder whether Yuzu stopped to chat with Brian. Since it was Yuzu’s decision to be without Brian at these Olympics, Brian must feel strange seeing Yuzu and Jun together, but only coaching one of them.

Re: scoring - I don't think that pushing the boundaries of technical content is inherently a bad thing. What's the issue is when technical jump based content is so highly valued in contrast to artistry that people are being blatantly overscored simply because their programs are packed full of quads (not to mention that half of quads jumped these days have awful technique that isn't called by judges). I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that I do believe Kamila had a deserved win in the TE, but the margin between first and second was ridiculous. Did she deserve the gold? Yes. Did she deserve a 30 point win margin? Absolutely not. I could say the exact same thing for Yuma with his jump GOEs and frankly insane PCS, the only thing he deserved 9+ for in his FS was SS.

Of course it's not a bad thing when skaters push the boundaries of technical content. It is a sport, after all. The problem lies with the whole scoring system not being executed as it should be. Instead, it's being abused by the ISU and national feds to reward their favorites in a disproportional manner. Skaters who execute multiple quads get points candies even - as you said - their technique is awful and even incorrect. At last as long as they're favored by the ISU and/or their feds.

It's not only that jumps are valued more than artistry. The basic issue is that the scoring is done in a biased and corrupt manner. If a skater puts their emphasis on jumps, they should get judged accordingly. If they are more on the artistic side, then they should get higher PCS. But nowadays, the GOEs and PCS are given out according to who is the favorite of the day.

As a result, we get ice jumpers who go from jump to jump with little in between. And if they happen to be judges' darlings, they all get huge GOEs even if their technique is flawed. On top of that, they get high PCS as an extra bonus even if they are very mediocre in PCS areas. The media also add fuel to the fire by spouting propaganda about how Nathan is a "quad king" who also has perfect artistry and Kamila is the best woman skater ever etc.

I also think that Kamila deserved to win her competitions this season. She is a good skater, there's no doubt about it. But did she deserve to win with such ridiculously high scores and margins? Definitely not.

And if nothing changes about the corruption in figure skating, I'm afraid it'll be dead in a couple of years.

You phrased it a lot better than I could have - I agree completely. I'm sick of watching people with high technical content like Nathan/Yuma/Kamila get PCS close to or even above someone like Yuzu when the level of 'artistry' (or lack thereof) is as clear as day

my brain is having trouble making simple timezone conversion calculations. Also, it was having trouble fiding the right world for "calculations" (I was going for calculus but it didn't feel right, had to check the dictionary:tumblr_inline_n2pjd0smCx1qdlkyg:). That says enough about my state of mind, I guess:roll::tumblr_inline_mh8pweVDqw1qid2nw:

thanfully there's the Planet calendar to double check LOL

the new theme is awesome, I gasped when I saw it:tumblr_inline_n2pjcy6tMv1qdlkyg: Of course blu is the dominant color :D Ok, Yuzu, let's channel the power of the blue!

Thank you @Hydroblade and PH staff for everything <3:thanks:

Also a personal anecdote: A few weeks before Olys in 2018 I broke my right ankle aka I sacrificed an ankle for Yuzu LOL

Incidentally I tore a ligament in my left ankle 2 weeks ago and I decided that it's a good sign!!

The other thing that is annoying is the way that the choreography gets stripped back as the season goes on (in normal times pre covid) but the judging seems to be done on the basis of the content of early skates - they judge on early impressions rather than what is in front of them on the day, which is one more excellent reason for getting AI involved.  If it can assess the technical content of a gymnastics floor routine it can count revolutions and check edges and steps on a skating rink - and don’t get me started on ‘sit’ spins.

I found this quite funny! (If anyone is unfamiliar, the Daily Show is a satirical show with a sarcastic sense of humor)

This is my first Olympic with Yuzu as a fan.Discovered Yuzu after his won  in Pyeongchang.Since then i have been watching all his past videos. In Pyeongchang he looked so care free and  playful with his coaches during the practice session. Here he looks focused and a bit tense..i think the pressure on him is so high this time around.I know he is determines to do the 4A no matter what even he is not have landed it practice yet..i hope and been praying he will achieve that and ultimately win.Because as much as we want to ignore the media Yuzu is a superstar in fs.Official Olympic twitter even has post about him pinned and it has more likes than the opening ceremony...so if Yuzu fails in doing the 4A he will get torn by the media especially after all the hype.I just dont want to see him hurt like that and i think he also know that because he even said in interview before that he afraid that all his previous accomplished will be forgotten if he didnt win.It is true because as of now ISU/JSF is so keen to try making a new star in which there are failing..and even from practice report people(who are not his fans) have already calling his retirement and making fun of his 4A attempt.Casual fans who will watch the Olympic also im afraid will have the same reaction as for them they didnt know the significance and the difficulty of trying 4A.

Hey everyone! :meditationf: Is there a way for us to watch the last practice (Tue morning) before the SP? I just checked NBC and it seems like there is not an option to stream it. Is this last practice closed to the media?

According to the PH calendar Yuzu's practice start now?  I hope there is a link again.

Welcome @ValerieFang:wave:

Unfortunately I haven't found a stream yet

The time difference is really tough. I've been "practicing" the last couple of days by staying up late.

I think the adrenaline and excitement will probably help to stay awake.

I can't believe men's SP is gonna start in just a few hours! :smiley-happy093:

I feel lucky and unlucky at the same time. The men’s short program starts at 5:15 PM in Vancouver, Canada. A really convenient time – too convenient. I have no excuse for avoiding it!

Same here...except that I'll still be at work by that time, so making it too convenient actually makes it inconvenient for me :yuzupout: I'll miss the first three flights, but hopefully I make it home before Yuzu skates :smiley-angelic001:

Work? What is that? One of the advantages of being retired. (Kuso! The SP is going to start in two hours!)
