I'm sorry to hear about Rika.:sad4:
I wish her all the best and a fully recovery.:smiley-angelic001:
This post has been tagged by yuzuangel as [NEWS].

It's very sad news, it must be devastating for Rika. :( She missed the previous Olympics by being born only 3 weeks later than 1 July, now she'll likely miss Beijing too (she can still qualify but if the Top3 skaters skate convincigly JSF might choose them to go to the Olympics). She was so promising in the beginning of this Olympic cycle but everything went wrong recently and she seems to have been mismanaged in the past few seasons.

Poor Rika. I wonder what that means about her shot at the Olympics? I know about the JSF selection criteria, but it also depends on their interpretation of it. It makes it even more interesting for the ladies... the 3rd spot finisher might be pretty stressed here, not knowing what they would do for certain in this situation. Rika is not Yuzu.... and who knows if she'd even be healed by then or how close she is to being healed right now.

Just, it sucks for her. So much talent not being realized at the moment, and now a persistent injury.

What are her qualifications? ie world standing, season's best, etc? It's too bad she was 6th at last year's worlds after a fluke unexpected bad FS...

She was 7th... :slinkaway:

To make matters worse, she's never medalled at Worlds and doesn't have a season's best/ season's world ranking. She isn't even the top Japanese woman in the world standings. :weeping:

Cross posting from my TJ post on this matter:

Spoiler

:sad4: I'm very sad about Rika's situation. Pushing through injuries for months / years, and then to not recover in time for the culmination of this Olympic cycle.

The thing is, to be given consideration for the Olympics, basically you have to be top 3 among Japanese in the world standings / season's world rankings / season's best / medalled at Worlds before. :sad4: Rika is definitely not in Yuzu's situation here. She's still top 3 in the world standings, but there are other strong Japanese women on the team. I'm not sure JSF is willing to push her to be on the team when she hasn't competed this season and her last Worlds showing wasn't great.

 this is disastrous

None. Rules are very clear. JNats are mandatory for everybody but world medalists. You don't go to JNats, you don't go anywhere.

Quote

Participation in the All Japan Championships, which is the final selection round, is mandatory.
However, in the event that a competitor who has placed in the top three at the World Championships in the past is unable to participate in the All Japan Championships due to injury or other unavoidable reasons, the competitor's performance prior to the injury that caused the non-participation will be evaluated in light of the above selection criteria, and the competitor's condition at the time of the competition may be considered. The selection may be made based on the player's performance before the injury that caused the player's non-participation.

Oh dear...her injury must be VERY seriously bad for her to not participate. But if it's so bad, will she even make it to the olympics healthy? :crybaby:

Poor Rika...for a while it seemed it was a given that she would not only make it to the Olympics but be a medal contender too. Seemed like her trajectory was only going up and then... How quickly things change in this sport :(

I guess Mai, Wakaba have a much better chance now. I imagine Kaori is a shoo in...no one has been more consistent than her this whole quad.
