October 23, 20214 yr I missed the competition because I calculated the time difference wrong Mods, please add the individual competitions to the calendar here. I know it is added work for you but it will really help hopeless idiots like me who always get time zones and conversions wrong
October 23, 20214 yr I could only see what was made available on youtube in the meantime. With regard to the men's SP I must say that in this context, which was quite disastrous for many, "Vincent"'s Vincent was certainly the best, even if from the fancam the quality of all the jumps could not be assessed well. Shoma wasn't bad either, although the choice of baroque music again and the repetition of some of the usual choreographic movements makes it all seem very similar to his programme on the music of Vivaldi. Instead Nathan would do better to take his Nemesis 1.0 and revise the choreography of that. This new mix does not seem very convincing to me, at least for now. For the rest, business as usual for him, made worse by the fact that in this contest he did not succeed in the most important technical elements (and I should look again, but maybe the combo should have been invalidated...?). Very sorry to hear of Shun and Kevin, who should seriously evaluate with their staff and coaches if it is worth to continue this competition. Hopefully everyone can do better - and without further injury - in the next segment of the competition.
October 23, 20214 yr Like fireovertheice I also looked at some of the fancams after the event was done - must say, great work by Vincent for landing all his planned jumps. Shoma's skate was also quite nice!! I especially liked the music in the second half of his program, although bad luck on the 2F. Also unfortunate day for Nathan - hopefully this lights a fire for him during the FS although I have to say not really sure if I would give him basically the same PCs as Shoma for that skate... Excited to see what happens during the free and wishing all the competitors good luck!

I have no idea why SLB and he thought mixing two songs by Benjamin Clementine is a good idea. The first song, whatever that is, is boring and the connection to Nemesis is jarring. I don't even know what the program as a whole tried to tell. Speaking of Nemesis, I don't think the StSq was ever this bland? PS: His sit spin is as bad as always.
October 23, 20214 yr How on EARTH Nate managed to get similar PCS to Shoma with his trainwreck of a programme/fall/missed combo/lack of energy/poor performance generally (I suspect combo shd have been invalidated but wasn't?) is beyond me - I think Nate scored same/higher than Shoma on spins too, just ludicrous. Also, TES went UP after the end of the programme!!! Edit - comment about judge 6 incorrect so deleted it 2nd Edit - oh I was right about the judge!! see tweet:

The right passport and Fed backup are how, my friend.

October 23, 20214 yr Rather good skates from Vincent and Shoma. I'm really glad that Shoma managed to keep it together after that 2F. I hoped Brezina will be able to have clean jump passes but well... Kevin was just painful to watch, hopefully he'll be able to overcome it. Nam's news is something I didn't expect but if he's convinced it's the best for him and his health then it's good he was able to make this difficult decision and take care of himself. Also, I don't get why Grassl tries with quints if his quads aren't particularly stable (and they look kind of "heavy" to me as well). Of course it his decision and if he succeed he will be remembered at least for that, but at the same time it seems like there are so many things he can improve in his skating instead of working on quints... When it comes to Nathan's program I'm rather disappointed. And it's not even about the falls. I hoped his program for the Olympic season would be... better? I really admire his jumping abilities and I see that there is a progress in his presentation skills comparing to a few years back (although he should get PCS that would make him try to improve those skills even more, he wasn't on Shoma level but what to expect from the judges...). The program seems just a bit empty at some points (transitions?). I suppose I wouldn't be so disappointed if someone else skated that program, someone who wouldn't get so many points from it and wasn't the world champion. Even if I am not a fan of this "hip-hopy" way of skating with lots of "arms choreo", he obviously can skate and he could do something more interesting than that. Maybe it'll come together with time but for now it didn't live up to my expectations.

October 23, 20214 yr Author After pairs the TV also showed the men's SP, except a few skaters (Adam, Kevin, Artur) so I watched some of them. Brezina's skating looks so old-fashioned, because he barely has any transitions, and he seems to focus only on doing the elements done. The 3S looked like a pop because the entry into it was slow and cautious. Nam's White Legend is a brave choice, maybe he'll talk about why he chose this short music as the last SP in his career. It's sad he had a rough off season and took three months off competing. I hope he can have a season he can be satisfied with. I liked Shun's performance even with the unfortunate fall on the 3A, he's improving and looks more committed to the performance too. I was sad to see in the kiss and cry that he wasn't able to put on his team jacket because it hurt his left shoulder. I hope he will be okay. I wonder if it's worth doing the free skate if he feels so much in pain - the season is long and he doesn't need to be in best shape now, but later in the season. I think Jimmy Ma wanted to show a different,, mature side of him but it feels this Swan Lake program doesn't really suit his style. He excels at fun, crowd pleasing programs. He even smiled (in a 'look-at-me' way) at the judges during the step sequence which could have been perfect during a fun program but not really in this one lol. Anyway I'm happy for him that he's currently 3rd behind Shoma. Shoma's program looks so similar to other programs he skated to before. It's probably because he has one kind of style, he makes the same movements in almost all programs. It's good for him the was able to do 4T-3T for the first time in years because he used to do only double toe-loop. The mistake on the 4F was too costly, because it's invalid. Nathan's Nemesis 2.0/Clementine-mix looks a bad choice in my opinion. The original Nemesis was better constructed, and it is inevitable that there'll be a comparison of the two programs. It won't matter as long as he lands the jump though. Today 4Lz was <, but the technical panel closed its eyes, an SP in the 70s range and 5th place would have been an even bigger blow and they tried to save him there. The judging panel also saved him with that 44 PCS and avoided to use the PCS cap, because with two serious falls he can't have any component over 9 point. It's just sad to see Japanese judge was again the one who scored Chen the most, even higher than the American judge. ETA: I forgot about Vincent lol. He's in good form recently and skated well today. But I read he was expecting a bit higher scores, no, I don't agree with that...
October 23, 20214 yr The Nathan Chen strategic method: For your first Olympics, you choose a SP titled Nemesis -- and bomb spectacularly. So for your second Olympics you choose ...
October 23, 20214 yr And now for the fs Nathan is doing 6 quads.Just watched the practice its basically just crossover from one side of the rink to the other and jumps. No choreo whatsover and i guess its will magically appear during the remix part when all the jumps finished. When Trusova did the same with her 5 quads layout everyone criticised her for just doing a jumping practice not skating but when Nathan is doing the same thing no one said anything...what a double standard...and of course judges will be sure to shower him with generous pcs for that.I thought in previous seasons he is trying to improve and skates more than just jumping but i guess once he already established the reputations and pcs all efforts to improve in that area is being abandon.Maybe that was his strategy all along..

His program is now emptier than empty wth. I expect 95+ PCS if he lands most of the jumps tho. “Lacrimosa” for Figure skating indeed, so poetic and I expect “spectacular comeback of century” titles in media tomorrow morning for him already.
