Good to have some insights from Brian, regarding timeline and Med to have her own "voice" (the last one was easy to assume to be one of the factors of coaching change).

That was a lovely article. I was reminded why I really want Wakaba to go there. *wistful sigh* I hope the partnership works out for both of them!

Edit: And YAY for Polina!! I’m so happy she landed somewhere!

It seems that Medvedeva's injury is much worse than I first thought, and now we learn she has back problem?!!!! I hope she makes a full recovery, and I do think she made the right choice with Brian. He and the team at TCC were great in how they handled Yuzu's injury and supported him throughout the season.

Good news from Polina as well. I am surprised at how quiet and quick her coaching change happened, but also happy she didn't have to go through a nasty breakup (at least not a public one)

I think everyone, other than Eteri, is sounding sensible. Med did well for Russia and is still the most reliable female they have right now because we know Alina is still growing and you never know what that, together with winning Olys so young, can do to a skater. Anyway, Med is mature and consistent (even injured), so it would be stupid to criticize your best chance for world podium again this year. And, so many coaches and skaters know and respect Brian personally from competition, touring, or from watching him successfully coach Yuna, yuzu and javi that most hesitate to say bad things about him.

On a side note... I wish more that we could have had wakaba or boyang instead, though.... wakaba for herself and her development and boyang so that yuzu could see that lovely 4lz daily!!!! I want yuzu happy and that would please him everyday, lol!!!!

Lastly... SO glad Polina has found a safe haven. So much talent she had/has.... I would be happiest if she came out and smoked all the other Russian girls this season!!!

SO MANY NEWS, SO LITTLE TIME

I AM HAPPY FOR MED, this is my dream as well

HAPPY FOR POLINA, I adore her skating

Worried for Taranakova :c Unfortunately, figure skating really looks like a sport that can damage the most fragile ones. It's not easy for young girls to control their weight, their diet, every day, so strictly because one pound can change your balance while jumping, without being at least somewhat affected by this. You have to have a spirit of steel not to be affected. Sorry, closed parenthesis.

I knew it...as I said on page 64 of this thread!!!
And here I thought it would be speculation to try and prove my thought on that count (amongst others), and that it might be a few years before we get the interviews and documentaries to reveal the truth, and I only needed to wait...a few hours?

https://www.ifsmagazine.com/medvedevas-move-russian-reactions/
"She told me that she wanted to change (coaches), but she did not say why. I immediately respected her as soon as she said, ‘I do not want to say anything bad about my current coaches.’"

This further proves my earlier comments 5-8 pages back that there must be a heck of an underlying story. Perhaps those media reports from Russia that suggest she was given the ultimatum of retiring may have a kernel of truth in them - perhaps not necessarily an ultimatum to retire, but an ultimatum of some sort nonetheless?

http://www.icenetwork.com/news/2018/05/07/275657578
"That the Cricket Club is private will make the arrangement easier, as it did for Kim and Hanyu, who could be shielded from public scrutiny as well as the demands of the South Korean and Japanese media, respectively."

A timely reminder from Brian that the media and us as media consumers must give these athletes we idolise space and privacy to live and train.

Her back problem could possibly comes from [Admin edit: Please do not speculate about the weight of skaters, eg. them being under- or overweight.] Just my opinion..

The back problem could be recent too. Doing Bielmann spin can cause back pain, right?

Yes, it was just a suggestion. Anyway, she should not remain in pain. They will take care of that. Brian Orser was talking about a 2 weeks rehab within skating when she arrived at the end of June

It would seem many skaters suffer from back problems. I believe it is no surprise since the landing force of those jumps is many times of one's weight so while a lot of that is absorbed by their leg musculature, inevitably, ankle/knee/hip and ultimately vertebral joints (especially lower back) suffer as they are all part of the same column. First example that comes to mind is Plushenko - after all, he pulled out of Sochi 2014 and retired on account of his recurring back problems I believe?

From a biophysics point of view, the human body would be considered poorly designed for walking and running, let alone jumping on flat ground and let alone jumping on ice with the lateral instability that ice creates, before you even account for the fact they land not on their foot per se but on an edge that is at most a few mm wide...
