I don't know whether anyone watching live got the same impression that I did, but Nathan's team blaming his boots when Adam skated on with a dislocated shoulder seems a bit pathetic- perhaps it was because I was taking on all the info in a lump so to speak.

Yea, I kinda feel more :ohno: about the excuse because it's not the first time they've attributed poor skates to boot issues. I don't know how new blades might impact skating, but I assume skating while injured is more difficult (see Evgenia, Adam and stubborn Yuzu). Not that I think they should have skated, but if they can do so without complaining, I wish Nathan's team will just say that he's had an off day. He's only human.

From Morozombie's list of questions:

Does anyone's eyes also start rolling when the USFS PR machine goes into overdrive and feeds us yet another mention of Nathan Chen's ballet prowess? It's like we have to be constantly told that NATHAN CHEN DID BALLET AND IS TOTALLY ARTISTIC the same way we were constantly reminded that MICHAEL WEISS IS NOT GAY; HAS WIFE AND KIDS or EVAN LYSACEK IS A 'WELL-ROUNDED' SKATER UNLIKE THAT 6.0 FOSSIL PLUSHENKO.

18. Gladiator Lite

17. Too early to tell. Let's wait for US Nats & Olympics

16. VERY old. Rooting for 19-year-old Plush or baby-faced Stephane was just like it was yesterday :slinkaway:

15. Not that much?

14. It was not that long ago.

12.

11. I haven't seen Sinitsina/Katsalapov's FD yet

10.

9. Han Yan

8. He hasn't cemented his spot yet, let's wait until Nationals. But I'm crossing my fingers for him that he makes the team. He has never been at the Olympics before.

7. Yes.

6. Birds. It's more important that nothing is on the ice.

5. It seemed so.

4. Maybe yes. At least I liked their Adele FS more.

3. Maybe a change would do her wonders.

2. Not that much. Ashley is a big name anyway. If she won't be injured and can skate well at Nationals (preferably without :carrot_:), it should be fine.

1. I'm definitely thrilled. Go Waka! :tumblr_inline_mi7tcqZmot1qdlkyg::tumblr_inline_mi7tcqZmot1qdlkyg::tumblr_inline_mi7tcqZmot1qdlkyg:

20. Is Skate America YOUR pick for the worst men's event of the 2017 Grand Prix season?
Didn't think there was a way to beat France GP for worst GP event of the season but here we are

18. Which program did Lori Nichol spend less time choreographing, Boyang Jin's Darth Vader Goes to a Cantina LP or Gabrielle Daleman's Gladiator Lite LP?
Trick question, she actually didn't spend any time at all on either

16. Does anyone else feel old seeing all those skaters you watched compete years ago now sit in the kiss-and-cry as coaches? O hai Plushenko . . .
It's slightly surreal and yes it makes me feel old but it's also kinda nice

15. How much did Kaori Sakamoto's stellar performances at Skate America this weekend throw a proverbial monkey wrench into the Japanese ladies' Olympic team selection process?

Probably not too much, tbh. I think it's 90% already decided on who goes to Olys.

6. Which is preferable, birds flitting around in the stands (à la Trophée Éric Bompards of days past) or insects on the ice?
Let the birds watch their favorite skaters, at least they don't endanger anyone if they're on the stands instead of the ice

5. Did the ladies' technical panel mistakenly assume they were at US Nationals instead of Skate America?
Given how they pushed Satoko and called Ashley on her mistakes I'm inclined to say no

2.  How does Ashley Wagner's withdrawal here at Skate America affect the calculus behind the USFS' "body of work" criteria for choosing the US Olympic team?
I hope not too much, I feel really bad for her and wish her a speedy recovery!

1. Is anyone else thrilled that we're going to see Wakaba Higuchi's excellent Skyfall LP at the Grand Prix Final?
YES! 1000% The only good thing to come out of this cursed event! :dancingpooh:

About Nathan's boot/blade issues—they also kind of imply it's because he does so many amazing technical feats that his boots break down more easily than other skaters'—and I just find it hard to believe he'd be different than Yuzu, Plushy, Boyang and Shoma in that respect. I'm sure the wear-and-tear is intense, but why uniquely so? His technique is decent too, so I wouldn't think there would be unusual uneven wear patterns.

I feel like he probably doesn't actually go through more blades, but is brought more to light when he does. He posts before many pics with just different pairs of skates and I am not sure if it necessarily is meant to be anything - I know they're American, but I really don't consider going through countless new boots and blades is really something to brag about, especially when most on the spot sudden breaks happen when a jump or similar element is done poorly - which is why it is a bit confusing to me. I know you can't hide break when it happens mid-practice - like with Shoma in WTT practice, he ends up breaking his boot and having to go back to tape them, evident when he goes for his FS in his now infamous duct tape boots. I think they don't mean anything by saying Nathan goes through a lot of blades, and I certainly don't think they mean to imply his doing so is something special over others.

20. Is Skate America YOUR pick for the worst men's event of the 2017 Grand Prix season?

Sorry, that'd be NHK for me...just...because.

19. Did anyone else recoil at the terrible, key-smashing "version" (to use that word loosely!) of Moonlight Sonata Kaori Sakamoto used for her short program?

I didn't notice the key-smashing. Just thought it was an overused piece of piano music.

18. Which program did Lori Nichol spend less time choreographing, Boyang Jin's Darth Vader Goes to a Cantina LP or Gabrielle Daleman's Gladiator Lite LP?

Hahaha...

17. Given Bradie Tennell's consistency so far, is she the new Anointed Savior of US Ladies Skating to fans of US ladies figure skating this season?

Haha, I made the joke that she's the Mariah Bell of this season....but somehow, I don't feel any hype. I think her skating is bland and she reminds me of Polina Edmunds, who was also consistent but bland.

16. Does anyone else feel old seeing all those skaters you watched compete years ago now sit in the kiss-and-cry as coaches? O hai Plushenko . . .

15. How much did Kaori Sakamoto's stellar performances at Skate America this weekend throw a proverbial monkey wrench into the Japanese ladies' Olympic team selection process?

I don't think it'll change much, tbh.

14. Before this weekend, when was the last time a ladies Grand Prix event didn't have at least one Russian on the podium?

Good question...

13. Does anyone's eyes also start rolling when the USFS PR machine goes into overdrive and feeds us yet another mention of Nathan Chen's ballet prowess? Yah.

12. Is anyone else sort of disappointed by Satoko Miyahara's programs this season?

Not really, she just got back from a serious injury and I'm surprised she can still skate as if she hadn't left.

11. Is Sinitsina/Katsalapov's free dance supposed to be a tribute to Mishkutenok/Dmitriev's legendary LP from the 1993-1994 season? Blasphemous!

10. How would Edward Said have reacted to Satoko Miyahara's music choices this season?

9. Whose untapped potential frustrates you more, Han Yan or Karen Chen?

Karen.

8. Has Sergei Voronov successfully cemented his spot on the Russian men's Olympic team with his bronze medal here at Skate America? As a former (doomed) member of #TeamMenshovforSochi, I can't help but amused.

7. Is it a good idea for Savchenko/Massot to continue working to incorporate the throw 3A into their LP?

6. Which is preferable, birds flitting around in the stands (à la Trophée Éric Bompards of days past) or insects on the ice?

Birds for sure!

5. Did the ladies' technical panel mistakenly assume they were at US Nationals instead of Skate America?

I didn't think they did. They seemed to have hit Karen the hardest?

4. Should Duhamel/Radford have repeated their Adele program instead of their Muse program this season?

3.  Does Karen Chen need a coaching change?

Yes.

2.  How does Ashley Wagner's withdrawal here at Skate America affect the calculus behind the USFS' "body of work" criteria for choosing the US Olympic team?

I don't think she should be a lock anymore if she doesn't finish in the top 3.

1. Is anyone else thrilled that we're going to see Wakaba Higuchi's excellent Skyfall LP at the Grand Prix Final?

20. No

19. Nope.

18. Gabrielle''s. She needs a new program and Star Wars would work better as a fun SP.

17. She might be. All the big names have issues of some kind.

16. A little, yes

15. Yup, apart from Wakaba, they haven't been as strong as could be. Satoko had an injury, but I expected Mai to do better and Marine seems almost out of contention now.

14. Eh... can't recall :P 2013?

13. No comment :Dean

12. I like her SP a lot.

11. Don't know.

10. He'd want to think about it for a while.

9. Han Yan. Karen Chen is newer to fame and has more time.

8. Hopefully.

7. Not sure.

6. Birds

5. They did their best to be neutral.

4. No.

3. Let's see how she does with her old programs.

2. I think she will still go, if not injured.

1. Yes!

Having said that, well done to Adam and Sergei - and :smiley-taunt014: to all the media that were convinced that anyone over 20 should go and leave the ice to the teenagers.  I wonder whether Patrick is wishing he'd been a bit more robust after Skate Canada?

I bet he is, considering that Yuzu withdrew. Patrick would have most likely won it.
