Shoma was always supporting himself with a maximum of one hand at any time, so I guess they just considered it as a very horrible step out with hand down or something.

SC this year was just weird for the ladies and the men's...something funky is in the fengshui there.

I've been following this competition since the beginning and right when I saw the scores/ranking on the ISU website, it looked so odd that Shoma was first and Patrick was out of podium.

 

It's been even kind of a tradition for Yuzuru to attend SC, get silver and be beaten by Patrick then get more motivated for the next competitions in the season. Yuzuru and Patrick's rivalry back in 2014 was super interesting to watch and it felt like they've been pushing the sport up to the point when quads/youngsters came in to fill that rivalry with new competition. In all, I do hope that Patrick stays motivated to continue and attend NHK to compete with Yuzu again because it brings a certain energy and excitement to the whole event that reminds of the previous Olympic cycle.

(I much prefer Patrick vs. Yuzu any day over Nathan/Shoma/Boyang vs Yuzu, for some reason -it just makes more sense to me)

Jason, what were you wearing?  And when can we see a landed quad, please? Still enjoy you and the entertainment you bring.

As for Shoma... I really wish I could enjoy Turandot 2.0. I liked the 1st version, this is... I like it less than I like Marin's, which I don't. And, that was not a fall? Owkay, then, judges and/or tech panel (who decide on whether a fall is a fall? Tech panel, perhaps, yeah?). Got the memo: I need to get my prescription changed But considering how everyone else didn't deliver, congrats on the gold.

 

I am lamenting a bit about how the bronze went to Samarin. But, oh well.

 

Back to Patrick. Gosh, my mind just goes to all kinds of unpleasant speculation. I really hope he is not having the same problem as Anna Pogo and Gracie *knock on every wooden surface* Canada won 1st place, except for Men's - did not even make the podium here   Patrick, I have my beef with your approach to the competition and your foot-in-mouth tendencies, but I do still enjoy your skating. Sending all positive thoughts your way, while hoping you make a good comeback for the rest of the season.

 

ETA: again, I am so glad I didn't waste my sleep on this.

Some random thoughts:

 

I just can’t with Shoma’s intensity face, looks like he’s in pain or, um, constipated. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but if he’d smile more I’d enjoy his performance so much more.  So his free was only about 2 points higher than Yuzu’s and I think he did more jumps, right?

 

I love the control Jason has in his skating and his spiral is glorious, but I don’t like the program and I don’t like his costume.  Happy he got silver, tho!

So the men's event was as underwhelming as the others...except for ice dance. Ice dance saved us all. Who would have guessed that 

I'm very sad about Patrick. From how he was approaching the season I thought he was going to enjoy just skating (and maybe snatch the team gold at Olys) without worrying too much about quads and scores and placements... I hope he won't let this bad skate affect the rest of the season

(And I selfishly wish for him to be at NHK)

Glad to hear surgery went well for Orser. Gosh these two days many sad things happened   

 

Congrats to all the survivors that managed to medal 

Shoma deserved the win this event by a mile 

(though I still don't like some judging during the event)

Okay ... Jason, you need some new pants, man, those one are a big no-no, Shoma looks 12 yo in this photo, and Samarin, that costume is an atrocity ... burn it ASAP!
