A friend of mine, who also loves figure skating, looked at Yuzu's SP this morning (she is not crazy enough not to sleep at 3 am as I did) and she said that it was quite boring and not emotional. I barely found words to mumble something about the first competition of the season and the knee pain (shame on me, never eloquent enough to describe his skating on the spot).

And I blame the camera, lighting or whatever, the ACI video is sooooooo gray...and sad...

When you want to criticize him, but can't find any obvious error, so you watched the slow-mo of his beautiful 4T-3T(rippon) and try to argue that there should be 1/4 rotation more....

I intended to only put in my two cents after I've seen Hanyu's FS but then I saw Nguyen's SP. Removing Hanyu's SP from the equation altogether, Nguyen's performance of his SP was the standout performance of the event for me. The darker arrangement that is his program music kind of reminds me of Lorde's version of Everybody Wants to Rule the World, but the picture this version of Over the Rainbow and Nguyen's performance of it paint is heavier on the juxtaposition of hope in a world that is seemingly without any. Like victims in a war zone stuck in an endless loop of suffering and desperate survival day in and day out still daring to hope that there's good in life and that there's life beyond  the one they're suffering. Even if their hopes and dreams are shot through and tinged in melancholia, and more likely than not to never come true, they still hold on to them. That's the image that smacked me in the face when I saw Nguyen's performance. So I find the song an awesome rendition of what a bright and bubbly song would really mean to the kind of world we are really living in. Have always been living in.

 

I loved Nam's SP too. And you've done a great job of explaining to me why I did.

Haha, I've never heard any Caucasian correct pronunciation of this most popular Vietnamese last name Nguyen.  So many various version....just a taste of the difficulty of foreign language. I actually met Nam and got a pic with him . I asked if he speak Vietnamese and he said very little ... he is very tall and cute and polite

Lol you made me really paranoid so I went on Youtube and found that I may have been pronouncing it wrong.... but so have Australian-born Vietnamese people!  There seem to be so many people teaching the correct pronunciation but they're all slightly different!
