Blessed if I know! I'm just repeating what I heard.

This is my vague memory, but I think I've heard that, in Olympic games where the ice rink is used for both figure skating and ice hockey, the schedule for ice making always an unavoidable issue for the organizing committee.

(Sorry for misspelling)

From Olympics and other competitions to leisure facilities, ice rinks need to create different conditions depending on the purpose of use.
For example, in the case of ice hockey, which requires speed and agility, the ice should be hard so that it is easy to brake and the pads can slide accurately. On the other hand, ice that is softer than for hockey is better for skating, but figure skating requires dry ice so that the skaters can skate smoothly and leave traces on it, and general skating rinks make the ice wet so that it is difficult to scrape off.

In general, when the wet-bulb temperature (*) is 7℃ and the ice thickness is 25mm, the optimum temperature for the center of the ice is -5℃ for ice hockey, -3℃ for figure skating, and -4℃ for general skating rinks. The temperature of the ice is controlled delicately to make ice suitable for the purpose.

(*) The temperature of the wet side (wrapped in cloth) of a moisture meter used to measure humidity.

A fancam. It's easy to see

1) How empty that program is. Also, it pretty much adopts his 2020/21 FP's formula when it comes to music composition. No wonder some people call this "Philip Glass version 2"

2) The ChSq is actually the best part of the program. It has ice coverage and performance.

3) His stiff knee.

4) Lack of speed and flow for the most part. The difference compared to this, hoh boy...

On a side note, he is skating to Mozart. Shouldn't the costume be ...more?

I do not understand Jimmy Ma's look. Is he doing The King and I or something?

Music is from Attack on Titan but the costume has little to nothing to do with that theme to be honest - it’s weird.  But I guess the green cape that is iconic in the anime wouldn’t do either :176:

Unexpected... It's only a first competition after all, but huh, Nathan really looked pissed off at the end of his free skate... Deserved win for Vincent.

I see Nathan already skates next week at SC, he has no one to lose to there, not really, so we will see how he does without that added pressure.

Nathan’s PCS alone shows how it is easy to abuse scoring to push certain skaters ahead of others. That was such an empty program. He will probably show his 6 quads layout for free.

Anyway, to me, Jimmy was the star of the night. I just hope Shun is okay, it was heartbreaking to watch.

I only had time to watch the replay of men's SP now. Nathan seriously got PCS of over 44 for that performance? :smiley-shocked032:

I'd say that was no more than a 37, 38. Even if he had skated his SP perfectly clean, 44 would've been too much. :noshake:

His performance was about as bland as his outfit. I dare not call it a costume. :20111123175551f36:

Thanks for looking that up. I have to say that I thought Kevin's issues yesterday were definitely at least partially due to ice conditions.  It's not like him to trip over his own feet, even injured.

I don’t want to beat a dead horse but Nemesis always reminds of Julian Yee and how he was unfairly robbed in 2018. The way it’s so empty and AGAIN being unfairly overscored makes me uncomfortable.

Well, everything in Skate Canada is in favor of Nathan. No competitors. Just, it will be hilarious to watch him and Jason skating their programs back to back.

Re: Ice, I talked to one of the skaters who said that the ice was new and made really fast. Ideally when you make ice you want to freeze as many extremely thin sheets of water on top as you can so it’s not like an ice cube, but they didn’t do that as much as they should have here. So the ice especially at the start of competition was very bad (you could see it in practices). It got better as time went on because every ice cut was adding those tiny little layers.

Hence: extremely bad men’s SP, getting better after that.

I am looking forward to Romsky taking the medal at SCI.  Would be great if he can get to the stage where he can challenge NC.

That would be too, too sweet!

ETA: My ideal podium:

1. Jason

2. Romsky

3. Nathan

That would almost certainly put NC out of the GPF.

From his interview it doesn't seem he is too fond of the 4Lo, so who knows if it will be a 6 quad program moving forward. Can he do 6 quads without the loop?

My question is rather: can he do 5 quads without a Lutz? His latest 4Lz statistics of 2021 is the following:

Competition SP FS
US Nats okay -4 GOE
Worlds fall okay
WTT not attempted not attempted
Skate America fall pop to double

So total success rate of his 4Lz in 2021 if we count out WTT: 2/6 = 33%

This is not exactly a reason to celebrate and probably the main reason why he pushes for the 4Lo now.

Without a stable 4Lz he will have a problem. A big one.

I didn't realize his success rate with 4Lz was so low recently. But anyway, even with that, he would still opt for the lutz and not loop. We will see tho.

Yeah, I just realized it now after the SP, too. No one's talking about it, because he had some decent skates at Worlds and WTT.

But the issues are there and with every competition the pressure grows to land a clean Lutz again.

All I  can say is, Shoma has now beaten both Yuzu and Nathan, not many have that under their belt.

Despite all our gloom and doom predictions all summer long, it does look like the Olympic win is not a foregone conclusion after all, folks. And suddenly I'm interested in the Olympics again.

The Olympic season is always special and unpredictable. That's why it's so exciting. :dancingpooh:

I already said before that Nathan's simple "just do one jump after another with nothing in between and finish with some fast music and flashy moves at the end" formula would not work out forever. He has been solely dependent on his jumps (and on very, very generous judging). If his jumps don't work for whatever reason, there's hardly anything left anymore.

It's already been the same old, same old with him since before the last Olympics. I think he hasn't improved at all in regards to his skating skills, performance abilities, expressions, musicality etc. His spins and energy levels seem to actually have gotten worse.

That said, every time I watch a competition without Yuzu, I have to think of what my mom once said. She only watches figure skating when Yuzu is competing because according to her, "After you've ever watched Yuzu skate, you just simply cannot watch anyone else skate anymore."

Yuzu is the only one whose performances I watch over and over and over again just for the sheer beauty and excellence in every way. Only he can leave such an impact on people that they will always remember him. :heartpound:
