I think it's fake (or they're guessing the assignments?) The venues are incorrect.

Skate America - Everett, Washington (not Chicago)

Skate Canada -  Laval, Quebec (not BC)

NHK Trophy - Hiroshima (not Osaka)

IDF - Grenoble (not Bordeaux)

Thnks for answering. Cnt wait for the announcements.

Brian is 168 cm and Yuzuru is 172 so I would say he grew up that much.

And here Yuzuru is on his skates standing next to Brian:

:tumblr_inline_mm2wbaeqQM1qz4rgp: Never seen this cut of the green room scenes before, it has so many cute moments!

  • So many people congratulating Yuzu and Shoma that Yuzu couldn't even take his boots off. (And there was also a guy with too short TJ blazer sleeves  maybe the design was to have too short sleeves hahaha)
  • Brian trying to get to Yuzu's side to take a TCC group photo, but Yuzu pushed him to stand in the centre :tumblr_inline_mqt4gmPEiv1qz4rgp:
  • Yuzu looking very tired :tumblr_inline_mqt4gi2T9v1qz4rgp: (But Yuzu can touch his shoes and then his face all over, and also still have smooth, glowing skin :tumblr_inline_mqt4grU8ua1qz4rgp:)
  • Yuzu shaking his sleeve out after taking off his jacket :10636614:
  • Yuzu packing up all his stuff and even checking under the table and sofa to see if he left anything behind :embSwan:
  • Coach fluffy congratulating Javi :tumblr_inline_ncmifaymmi1rpglid:

I dunno why I just find everything Yuzu does so cute, even though it's just something very ordinary :13877886:

I care because it captured so brilliantly both his grace and ferocity. You can tell the author was inspired by Hanyu to begin with and to take that inspiration away reduces the impact of the art. What it's been replaced with is... odd. Interesting but odd. As for the story, they've even taken out a reference to Leonardo Di Caprio, replaced it with boxing imagery, and made sure the main character clearly proclaims his interest in "manly clothing."  What a wasted opportunity. I should have known it was too good to be true. Why couldn't they have just pitched it to a girls' publication instead? Oh well, at least they were kind enough to publish the original online for free.

I was okay with the changes at least in style because it wasn't explicitly an adaptation of Hanyu as a skater and his life.

But about the rest. Ew. It's even worse than I thought. Like a big wtf. :animated-smileys-angry-033:

I've just tried, the nuance was a little difficult for me to translate since his grandparents' wording were so polite.

The season of cherry blossoms has come to Sendai. We hope all is well with you. Since the Olympic Games, the days passed so quickly that we were late to say thank you. We appreciate your continued warm support for our grandson, Yuzuru. For us, this award (gold medal) was only a miracle because he had been injured just before the game. He himself has also said, but (we also feel) it was nothing but the power of cheering from everyone helped him not to fall in the end (of the program). At that time, even us who were cheering at the venue felt something great power, so it probably reached him more strongly. Hoping for his resurrection, how many people gave him great encouragement at the venue or through TV...we can not thank you enough no matter how much we appreciate it. Thank you very much. Now, quietly looking back, we are most pleased not only to see the consecutive victories, but also Yuzuru said, "This is the start line of my life, and I want to make an effort to be a human being suitable for the gold medalist." As his grandparents, we could not be happier for his words. We can not help hoping for him to live a life humbly and sincerely without forgetting these words. However, he is still 23 years old, still immature. Please watch over us warmly and strictly. We pray for all your health, and this is a quick note to thank you. On a fine day in March.

So they actually saw his victory in person :devilYuzu:

His grandparents were at the venue!!!! I hope his dad and sister were there too! It’s so wonderful to have your family there to support and in the end to witness history made. Also they could see the fan support is tremendous!

Thank you so much for the translation!

It said that the original manga was published as one-off which was received well by many readers. That is why they've decided to publish as on-going sports manga series. TBH, the publisher is making a huge mistake for altering the original version to somewhat more suitable for the magazine's target reader (for this case, boys in general - young and old). I recon the publisher didn't do their research well enough before hand. I think the one-off version was read by both boys and girls but the people voiced their appreciation probably were mainly girls (like fanyu) and the publisher misread that.

When I was growing up, I used to read these magazines though I'm a girl (well.. once was :13877886:). This particular one - weekly shonen magazine has great history of spo-kon (sporting spirits??) manga including "Ashita no Joe", "Yakyukyo no Uta" and "Kyojin no hoshi". Just because the magazine is called "shonen (boys) magazine", it doesn't have to be exclusive for boys. It won't hurt to have more regular reader base regardless of the gender. I'd say it's a typical Japanese oyaji-thinking. They just have this rigid way of thinking that they cannot get in touch with their feminine side. By them changing things around to beef it up, the original essence will probably be watered down so much (or added more BBQ sauce?) that the people who liked it in the first place probably won't even look at it again.

I know blood, sweat and muscles don't go with sequins for those oyaji editors but us girls can have them all! Why can't they accept it? I know people are willing to invest into something boldly different as long as the story has its legs to stand on.

Just an addition that Shonen Jump is (was?) publisher for Prince of Tennis. Judging by the style of character's popularity rankings (Valentine chocos anyone?) I would say both author and editors know their main audience are ladies, despite what title of magazine has to say. Also, I know PoT should be considered in a category of it's own with how-let's face it- weird this series is, but all the side productions for it suggest that just because these boys are throwing galaxies at each other through their rackets on the court doesn't mean they cannot be happy, sparkly, pretty/beautiful cutepies/memes, depending on a character. If you reverse it to the blood and sweat in practice and smiles and sparkles on the ice rink, you could make a decent manga about skating and still have it less weird than PoT and definitely more shounen-y.

Also, before somebody misread this-yep, main fanbase are ladies, but current musical based on the manga runs with half of the cast being fans of the original series( some reading it at the original release time!!), so it's not like it's ladies-exclusive amusement...

So in conclusion- f**k oyaji gender norms, give us blood, sweat and sparkles (-ly beauty) this sport consist of!
