So, interestingly I was reading a book called Mindset: the new psychology of success just recently, and one chapter in particular got me interested because it totally applies to Yuzuru, which is a chapter aptly titled sports : the mindset of a champion.

 

To sum it up simply, it's a sort of growth mindset that relies not on natural talent (which is fixed and can't be improved upon),but in putting in the effort ("even if effort lies, it will help me grow in other way") that allowed the athletes to be truly sucessful. And everything they talked about, from how champion athletes view success and failure differently(they feel most successful when they are improving and doing their best, not just by winning, and they find setbacks motivating and informative= sounds like anyone we know?) to how true champions can sustain their position at the top because of the right mentality, remind me of Yuzu and his insightful talks. In the book they gave examples from different sports discipline and champion athletes from different countries, so yes, I would say what makes a champion mentality is not necessary culture dependent, but a mindset that is built on natural character+ good family and coaches who encourages that kind of thinking.

I have a very similar Oral B toothbrush (well my last model was very similar). That stuff is nice and all, but it's just a novelty. I barely used that hand held timer.  I had a snazzy case too, but have since misplaced it and if I haven't found it yet it's probably gone forever lol. So it's a ziplock bag for me when I travel (super stylish, I know ). Really the only things of use to me is the timer on the toothbrush so I know when to change quadrants.  And of course that the brushes are compatible. So for my latest one it's just the base model and it works just fine.

No idea whether they are back together, but giving that the much hyped cooperation at Makuhari was somewhat short of overwhelming, it might just be that for old times sake he's trying to get her some positive press/attention in Japan. Since she has had little of that lately and he's among the most popular foreign skaters.

 

EDIT: I think he somewhere said he's a soccer fan or some particular Spanish club's...

He's a big fan of Real Madrid [ his home city ] iirc

Didn't Nanami Abe also coach Arakawa Shizuka early on in her career? There must be something in the water in Sendai that both Japanese Olympic FS champions have been from there. I recall seeing something that reported that after Hanyu, she didn't really take on any new skaters as coach and really did just embrace being a choreographer.

 

With Orser, maybe it's his team, maybe it's a massive fluke, maybe it's the athletes that come looking for him. But with Yuna, then Javi, then Yuzu it is clear that he knows how to nurture already-there talent and potential. He knows how to improve upon already great jumps and skaters to make them a whole other level of great (we are called PLANET Hanyu for a reason). It will be interesting to see how his more junior skaters fare.

 

Regardless, we can all agree that Hanyu is a once in a lifetime kind of athlete and I certainly do feel grateful to have been able to witness everything he has achieved.

Same experience here---the novelty of transferring brushing data to my phone app wore off after a couple weeks, but still find how the toothbrush pauses slightly to tell you to move on to the next quadrant quite useful. However when you're in a hurry, the 30 sec per quadrant seem like an eternity . Also, the BT connection drains the battery pretty fast.

I think it rather depends on whether the culture that suffered from the presumed supremacy has been able to come to terms with the history or whether it's still a sore point- I'm not qualified to judge but it is a point I've seen raised in several places, which leads me to wonder whether it would be a problem.

I listened to a recent news piece saying that the Korean government asked the Japanese government officially apologize for what the Japanese soldiers had done to Korean women ( kidnap, enslave as sexual objects...) during WWII.  That could be a potential problem in Olympic if Yuzu wants to skate to Japanese theme. I don't know..
