I'm putting this under spoiler because I'm pretty sure it's not PG13. Warning : Javi intense glare + eyeliner + gasping combo. Oh, and a smile at the end - because Javi.

Yay!! Thank you for bringing the planet back

Bringing this here because I don't want to derail the general Yuzu topic again but: ISU shenanigans aside, serious question: what would be, in your opinion, the best way to integrate Icescope - or equivalent technology - in the judging system? I certainly think that new technologies should be used as a more objective way to grade of jumps (you know, the ever elusive height/distance guidelines from ISU), but clearly it is not the only relevant factor. Air position, landing, difficult entry/exit (haha, right?) etc. are still very important. So what is your best hypothetical scenario? Would you see it as 2 separate components of the jump score, one from Icescope-like + one from judges for execution? Or Icescope stats used to factor the score somehow, goe style? Or a level system (being in this range allows you a bv of so much, step seq style) ? I'm curious to see how more experienced fans/skaters would prefer to see this being used. Also, don't tell me it's impossible to develop a similar technology to evaluate rotations and finally get fair calls for UR.

On a funnier note, people really want to see this happen, don't they?

I think this tweet summarizes the situation quite well.

You know what? I'm changing my mind: dear Yuzu, please bring all the quads that you want next season. Give me 4A and 4F. I don't care about my sanity anymore. Anything is better than this costume.

The horror.... Can't be unseen.... Why did you have to show this to us? Is it just me or did they try to give him his trademark thin waist and curvy hips? Not that it makes the picture any less horrible, but it's quite funny.

Same... same...

There is in fact a report of Yuzuru's donation on the website of the ice rink (in Japanese). But it's a personal donation. As far as I know, there is no such "Yuzuru Hanyu fund". It's simply him giving away his earnings. He's not even advertising it himself. My guess is that he doesn't want the attention to be on him?

Oh boy. As someone who works in academia and has an issue with Ivy league (or any other prestigious university) name dropping that goes much beyond figure skating, I was originally trying to stay out of the topic. Because Nathan really seems to be a humble and pragmatic person from his interviews and I don't want to sound like I'm trying to drag him in the mud. I'm not. But, the reality is that the US educational system is not one that is so heavy in terms of hours of class and workload compared to some other countries, even in prestigious schools. With few exceptions, the system is basically designed for students to be able to have a job on the side - partly because of the very high costs of college education. My own friends in the USA all had about half of my university schedule in terms of classes, and they were working another 10-20h/week on the side to pay for their education. In fact, Yale's own student employment rules allow students to work up to 19h/week during the school year, not including summer and recess (yes, I checked, because I'm that petty). So it is really not uncommon to combine university and a "side" paid job (or a sport for athletes) in the USA. At least for undergrads, PhD is another story. I think, sadly, that a lot of people are simply ignorant of how different school systems can be from one country to another. I'm not even arguing about which educational system is better (that's a very complex topic, each system has good and bad sides), I'm simply saying that in terms of pure time management, skating and going to a US university (no matter which one) at the same time is not such an incredible feat as far as I am concerned. Time isn't the issue here. What *IS* a much more impressive feat to me, is the fact that Nathan is able to keep his level of competitive skating while being away from his coaching team for long stretches of time. Which means that he knows himself very well, understand what to work on and how to address issues. You can't do that without good work ethic and self-awareness. So, congrats to him for that. I don't mind people praising him in fact, but I really could do without the constant Yale name dropping.

Well, rather accurate. Although Nam did call him his "skating daddy" (along with Javi).

Doing a bit of research on possible charities that we might want to support (as an alternative to a material gift to Yuzuru), if we are being serious about the idea. On the assumption that (1) it has to be on a 100% voluntary base (people could contribute to the "book" and not give money and vice versa) and (2) we want something related to Yuzuru so most likely "disaster relief" or "sport/FS" in Tohoku (or more broadly Japan). As far as disaster relief goes, a lot of foundations (both Japanese and international ones) have stopped focusing on Tohoku in favor of other causes after 2014 or 2015. So, this is what I found (under spoiler because of length). It's a starting list, I'm sure a Japanese speaker for instance could find additional (and probably more local) options. Also, if anybody has an opinion on these organizations, it's obviously very welcome since I am mostly relying on their website/SNS information. As far as sports & FS go... hum, sorry not many options from my disappointing research. Very difficult for me to find any serious foundation or NPO so I welcome any input

Should we start a Planet Hanyu Twitter directory? (List of PH members and... interesting sources to follow?)
-
I like the idea of having sections rather than a page per person because 1) otherwise it could feel a bit like a high school yearbook and 2) some people might want to participate in a given theme (for instance only show a picture of something they crafted and threw on the ice, or only a "if it wasn't for Yuzu..." quote) but not necessarily fill an entire page with all the different parts. In other words, it gives more freedom to whoever wants to participate as they can choose how much they want to share.

Poll: Yuzu's new ultra low Hydroblade - Did he kiss the ice?
Veveco replied to Danibellerika's topic in Yuzuru Hanyu
Oh, I think there's no doubt that he did it at WC gala. Not sure why people are convinced that you'd get hurt doing it. It's been done before (OK, maybe not while skating), you're not necessarily going to bleed. I'm more concerned about how dirty the ice must be personally -
For the record, that JSF comment was from before the competition. Real good job supporting your "many megastars", JSF. I sort of understand their meaning, but since they're not getting anywhere near the results they want (seriously, Yuzu's medal saved their faces!) it comes out as really delusional. Start by supporting your current stars, especially the ladies, a bit more efficiently. For the 2nd tweet, apparently when they went to get their gift box after the gala it had disappeared. Nothing to do with poohgate, though quite sad for them!
