Old Cat Lady replied to Old Cat Lady's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
He was talking about the ordinals and how since Plush was 4th in the SP, Yagudin could afford to be 2nd in the FS. At first he was just saying that he was conceding the LP to Plush. But then Yagudin watered down his program some more and Scott started going on about how he can't concede the long program to Goebel or he could lose. Scott definitely thought Yagudin might lose the LP to Goebel. But he was talking about their style, not being cautious vs assertive or whatever a better word for it is. Both pairs skated with "attack". Not sure about this one, but I also think he completely ignored the mistakes made by G&G and their lower jump tech. The seeming implication was that G&G were perfect and if M&D won, it was because the judges just liked them better. -
Rewatching 2002 Olympics. Anyone remember when Scott Hamilton screeched during Yagudin's LP "He's conceding the long program to Goebel". Yagudin was a unanimous 1st in the free skate and Goebel's ordinals ranged from 3rd to 5th Scott Hamilton during 1994 Olympics about G&G vs. M&D "It's passion vs. perfection" after G&G made 3? mistakes. Also, passion isn't part of any of the scores Joe Inman in his TSL interview: [About Hanyu] 10:45 I never get the feeling that he understands what he’s skating to. 15:08 If you don’t have music that has a lot of variety, how can you interpret the music?[so he penalizes if he doesn't like your music]... not truly understanding what he’s skating to. 18:25 A +5 is perfection for me. I don’t know what they’re saying a +5 is… there is a must, where if you don’t have the 3 things or, whatever, 4 … basically, if you look at what we did at the very beginning, the take-off, rotation, the something else, I can’t remember, and the landing, and if you look at those, that’s what they’re talking about must be achieved and from there you go up. [yup. the expert judge doesn't even know what the core bullets are] 19:35 I never give a +3 on a sit spin because of the positions… to me, when they go to those turtle things, the aesthetic is lost [he automatically holds back marks for doing a sit spin] 28:03 B: where then, are you penalizing for that poor posture? Is that skating skills or performance? I: I do it in both… even though it says carriage in skating skills… even though it was pounded that you’re not supposed to say posture… [so he outright says that he ignores what he's told he's supposed to do. he goes on to explain the difference between posture and carriage so it isn't just a semantics issue. Also, carriage is listed in performance, not skating skills] 30:54 (Kolyada) I don’t see enough variety of interesting movements, especially this Carmen 34:13 talk about good posture and carriage… was Brezina… I liked personally that better in my marking was .5 higher in everything except skating skills to Koldaya [Kolyada], the Russian boy. 40:40 L: How about Vincent’s components. To me, they were really inflated… I: I think he’s better than what everybody’s saying… I think he’s just as good to me, maybe not carriage wise, as the Russian Carmen [Kolyada ] 57:10 I: Fans have bias, prejudices, and their favorites [explaining the difference between fans and judges] and Hanu [What he calls Hanyu the whole interview] is a favorite of a lot of people 1:10 I gave [Kolyada] a 7.5 58:15 I don’t know if he’s taking a full load [Jonathon’s eyes widen - talking about Nathan at Yale] He also goes on and on and on about how he marks down on everything for poor phrasing. Phrasing is specifically listed in the Composition mark

I think you're right about the thighs being the biggest problem. I don't think even women's clothing would work since his hips are too narrow compared to his thighs for women's clothing. For men's, his waist is too small compared to his hips. Wearing his pants lower means a big ol baggy crotch. I think rockstaryuzuru is right. Only thing he can do is wear sweats/Hakamas everywhere or get a personal tailor.

Lol, between your discriminating taste and my over enthusiasm, we might get a respectable list. For most years at this point either I didn't see the whole season or it's so long ago that I'm having trouble remembering. It was a loooong lapse and I have a terrible memory. 2014 Hanyu Olympic SP Ilinykh/Katsalapov Olympic FD Chan GP France LP Kim Olympic LP Kim Olympic SP Volosozhar/Trankov Olympic SP Volosozhar/Trankov Skate America LP Stolbova/Klimov Olympic LP Mao Asada Olympic LP Julia Lipnitskaya Olympic Team LP Just an FYI, it looks like 2006 Olympics haven't been affected by the Youtube purge yet. -
Guess the New Programs! (and win nothing if you do)
Old Cat Lady replied to Yatagarasu's topic in Yuzuru Hanyu
He could use it in the choreo sequence but it won't really gain him any points. If judges actually followed the guidelines, it should up his transition score since they're more difficult than simple turns/crossovers while waving your arms around or, depending where they are, his GOE's but realistically, he'd just make his program more difficult while getting no credit. -
Lol. I didn't see that. Every time I've seen him in jeans I thought they looked weird as well. I imagine he's too stubborn to go to women's clothing but I think that's the only way he'll find anything off the rack that has a shot at fitting him.

This is harder than I thought. I was thinking that 10 might be a bit excessive but I tried it for 2017/18 season, when I didn't even see every competition and gala and the 2018/19 season and I'm already finding myself cheating. 2019 Miyahara Skate America LP Hanyu Rostelecom SP Sui/Han Worlds LP Papadakis/Cizeron WTT Free dance Hanyu Worlds LP Uno 4cc LP Kolyada Worlds LP James/Cipres WTT LP Tuktamysheva WTT LP Hanyu Worlds Gala Kihira NHK LP Nobu Oda Japan Open 2018 Savchenko/Massot Worlds LP Tarasova/Morozov Olympics SP Hanyu Olympics SP Medvedeva Olympics LP Medvedeva Olympics SP Zagitova Europeans LP Sui/Han Olympics SP Papadakis/Cizeron Worlds FD Shoma Uno Olympics SP Dmitri Aliev Olympics SP Wakaba Higuchi Worlds LP Mikhail Kolyada Worlds SP I'm inclined to cut Tuk and Nobu from the 2019 list because I know that there are quality issues in those programs, but I like them because they're so different than the rest. In 2018, I already cut Zagitova's SP even though I like it more than her LP. I thought the LP was relevant just because it was one of the biggest stories and it was a remarkable technical achievement. I didn't include Yuzu's LP because I'm going to have it on the 2015/16 season. I love the way Aliev moves and lands his jumps but I love the purity of Kolyada's technique. Already made made some major cuts and I'm still over eta: Just realized I don't have Notte Stellatta and Carolina's sp from worlds on here either. I know NS can be grabbed for the 2017 season but I thought the performance at the Olympics was especially touching. I think one of Med's programs, Aliev, and Kolyada are probably the most likely to be cut. Maybe Shoma's SP but I hate leaving him out completely. eta 2: I feel like Trusova's Junior worlds LP should be on the 2018 list as well. Maybe I should give up on this top 10 limit -
It's officially off season. It's a good time to catch up on those years I missed and reminisce about those great performances. What are your top 10 performances from each year? You can pick across all disciplines and segments, including galas. If people are interested, maybe we can compile a list for a streaming party.

I'm concerned by this wording. you think he means he's never been able to land it cleanly? I thought he said that he did, but only like 5% of the time or something.

Don't me. I'm aware this is highly unlikely, but if Yuzu really does bring both 4 axel and 4 lutz back next year and we're operating under the assumption that none of the men will do a 5 quad layout, he could do SP: 4a, 3a, 4t/3t* = BV 49.17 LP: 4a/2t, 4a, 4lz, 3f, 4t/3t*, 3a*, 3a/e/3s* = 98.55 Total BV: 147.12 GOE 3: 186.06 SP: 4a, 3a, 4t/3t* = BV 49.17 LP: 4a, 4lz, 4t, 3a, 4t/3t*, 3f/3a seq*, 3a/e/3s* = 99.25 Total BV: 148.42 GOE 3: 187.27 Nate's 5 quad fs that he was practicing at worlds + his actual SP = 146.72, GOE 3 = 184.58 Of course, they both have options to up their BV from here, but I was trying to keep it somewhat within the realm of possibility. I was also thinking that Yuzu should drop his Biellmann for competition. Not only does it tend to cause long term back problems but Yuzu normally has to replace it with A-spin, which is not only ugly but causes him to lose .2 in bv. Which doesn't sound like much, but why give away free points? He's better off learning a new spin that'll be 3.2 bv consistently and not switching back and forth means that the spins he uses get more practice.

huh. I wonder why she's going with Gordeeva. I thought she was Grinkova when she was a child.

If everyone did individual donations perhaps all we need is for everyone to send a note saying something like "on behalf of Planet Hanyu from all around the world to show our love for Yuzu". I think it is a simple and unpretentious way of showing just another way in which he has been a worldwide inspiration, not just Japan. p.s. I've been adding up the various donations raised by Yuzu and so far I have: 27008514 Blue Flames, Blue Flames 2 book royalties to Ice Rink Sendai 5000000 2019 Olympic Winnings to Miyagi prefecture 5000000 2019 Olympic winnings to Sendai city 7120000 2019 charity auction to reconstructions 8501000 2018 charity auction to reconstruction 3361000 2016 charity auction to reconstruction 42780000 revenue from merchandise sold from Hanyu exhibitions Total is 98, 770, 514 yen which is $882, 514.54 US 784, 838.16 Euro 1,180,208.87 Canadian But I'm still going through the history. Looks like I'm still missing some Ice Rink Sendai donations. Didn't the surplus from the parade go there?

Best choreographers/choreography
Old Cat Lady replied to hoodie axel's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
I agree with that. My knowledge of skating history is just very spotty I would also say that I don't think every year counts when I think of "longevity". If someone had a big success and it was 5 years before anything of note, then they had another couple years of success, then another couple years of nothing, and another year of relative success, I don't consider that great longevity. -
I suppose it's hypocritical of me to find this hilarious but I do. And she's probably right. The guys I've known that are specifically into Asian women tend to not care about what they look like as long as they're not fat. This poster is interesting. Yuzu is literally front and center. I get that he was chosen for the extra attention he will garner but I think it''s interesting that they also chose Stepanova & Bukin for the poster. As far as I know, they don't have a huge NA following and

Best choreographers/choreography
Old Cat Lady replied to hoodie axel's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
Why Wilson or why am I including it in the consideration? For the former, honestly I don't know exactly how long he's been doing it. I just know that he's been cranking out programs for top skaters for many many years and he seems to have the biggest body of work. But I know Lori's been doing it for a couple decades now so if it's her, I have no dispute. I haven't followed skating consistently so I'm not sure if she's produced top programs year after year If you're questioning the latter, I guess it depends on whether you're asking for greatest career or greatest talent. If you're talking the greatest talent, then I don't think it's that relevant actually. ETA: I just realized you said just for singles in the op and I picked Lori based on S/h. -
Best choreographers/choreography
Old Cat Lady replied to hoodie axel's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
Funny, I was actually thinking about this after I was complaining about David Wilson on the "thoughts on programs" thread so I started compiling lists of programs by choreographer. It's a lot more work than anticipated and I got a bit distracted with other things so I never finished it. This is a hard question to answer actually. First, I think you need to define what makes a great choreographer. These are the qualities I can think of off the top of my head: 1. strategy - who best milks the scoring system? How well does the choreographer understand what the skater can handle? How well does he hide weakness of the skater while emphasizing the strengths? How well are they able to adapt to needs? At least this year, I think Shae and Jeffrey did really well with this with Vincent and Nathan. The many shorter movements hide their inferior edge quality while giving the illusion of content. They both had programs that looked busy but was comprised of simplistic movements that these skaters could handle while still landing jumps. it's enough to fool the judges ... or give the judges enough of an excuse to mark the way they want. 2. Longevity - I guess we give this to David Wilson. Pretty sure he has the largest body of work. Whether you like his work or not, we can't deny how many times medals were won with his programs. Pretty sure he has the largest body of work of active choreographers 3. Consistent excellence. Not sure who I'd give this to. I think this is the one where the list is most relevant. This kind of just comes down to what percentage of the programs were good. Also, what's better; a choreographer with higher highs and lower lows or one that is reliable? 4. Impact. How memorable was the program? Was the program innovative? Did it elevate the skater? If I had to pick a single program it would be Sui/Han's long program. But then there's also a question of, how much is the choreographer and how much is the skater? I'm sure there's more that I can't think of right now. Taking a cursory look, I'll grudgingly give it to Nichol for this year at least though I dislike a lot of her work but I think she's second to Wilson in how long she's been at the top and I think she did the best program this year. Of course, if I'm only naming a choreographer for this year I don't think Longevity is all that relevant. Must think on this more. -

Guess the New Programs! (and win nothing if you do)
Old Cat Lady replied to Yatagarasu's topic in Yuzuru Hanyu
Woops, replied before I read the whole thread. I'm on board with seductive but I think this particular song is too light and flirty for Yuzu - when I heard it, I immediately thought of Javi. I don't know a lot of programs by Kurt, but in the few that I remember, my problem with Kurt as a choreographer is that I feel like he tries to turn skaters into him and I think he choreographed one of Yuzu's worst programs. He's great for a skater that already has the style that he likes to makes but I wouldn't use him to create anything special to the skater. -
Guess the New Programs! (and win nothing if you do)
Old Cat Lady replied to Yatagarasu's topic in Yuzuru Hanyu
This is the way I feel. I wouldn't want him to abandon them completely, maybe just reduce it down to 1. But I also think that we've seen glimpses of a lot of things that we don't get to see in programs because of these signature moves and I feel like it might be hurting him because people have a tendency to compare him to himself rather than other skaters. I have no guesses about his programs next year other than I'm sure it will be Shae and Jeff for competition and probably Wilson for the ex but I was thinking recently that I never liked Parisian Walkways until I saw it at Ciontu. I would like to see him try a more sultry style programs with his current levels of interpretation. For his other program, something darker and edgy. I'd like to continue to see strong, dynamic Yuzu next year. I kind of want to see him drop Shae as well. I feel like Jeffrey has been the more innovative choreographer for him. I'm not sure how much of the relying on signature moves is Shae and how much of it Yuzu, but I would like to see him try someone fresh, if only for just 1 season. I've been curious how a Tarasova program might look on him. -
WTT prediction game
Old Cat Lady replied to Old Cat Lady's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
Yes, I was quite pleased when I did my calculations. I don't take Keiji's WTT score too seriously, but I'm happy that he ended the season with 3 pretty good competitions. Maybe he's just one of those late bloomers and can keep getting better in this coming quad. Javi peaked when he was 24-26. I would love it if Keiji could get some international medals next year. -
Are these actual real things? If not, perhaps the Planet needs a gift shop section

2019/2020 Season Program Announcements
Old Cat Lady replied to sallycinnamon's topic in Knickknacks: General Skating Chat
Do you mean fresh as in innovative or fresh as in "different from her normal style"? Because if you mean the latter, I think they tried that with Orange Colored Sky and it failed miserably. I'm not surprised that they're gun shy about new things this year.
