The base values of jumps are being reduced, not just for the men but it would be the same base value for women as well.

Interesting. Do you know what it's being reduced to? or have the site where all the changes are happening?

I would have guessed that they would try to change the PCS multiplier versus reducing jump value. I guess that's because they're intending to hand out GOE like candies with the added value.

I think these are the proposed values, although not sure if it's what they settled on: http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2017/09/11/253667206

I also think changing the PCS multiplier is better because triples really don't get hit with much of a change at all, but quads are taking a big hit. Doesn't make figure skating more interesting to watch for me, sorry. And lol a quad axel is only 12.5 points.

There was a mention on Alice's blog that Rika was skating injured, too. :13877886: If it is true, that explains a lot. I hate most things about this season.

She broke a finger in her hand in January, I think. I'm not sure how healed it was.

Ouch.

Not sure how it makes your 3As go away though. :/

3As do require a lot more balance of the arms for the takeoff than other jumps so maybe the swoosh of the arms can be a bit painful if you have an injured finger? I don't know.

But nerves also played a role because she did two nice 3As (one in combo) in the warmup.

Poor Rika.

I hope she finds her Nationals nerves again next season.

I think she needs to go senior next season. Maybe going into a level of competition where you're not expected to wins medals right away will help take some pressure off so she can better deal with her programs with the 3A.

What new rule? I'm not updated on any rule changes other than for the Men.

I haven't watched the competition, just some short videos. I'm happy for Sasha on achieving such a milestone. However, unless she's going to turn senior immediately and qualify in age (she's 13 right?) I don't see her being able to keep her quads after puberty. Her legs are kind of crooked when she jumps so it slows her down actually. She's able to get the rotation because she's tiny. Maybe she'll fix it in order to keep it later. Still wow what an achievement.

The change of bv for quads isn't confirmed yet but the range of goe is. Assuming that the bullets stay roughly the same and mistakes will now weight much more (and that judges apply the rules to all skaters), it could become too risky trying a quad or a 3A if a step out can make it worth roughly the same of a very good triple (also consider quads and 3A require much more physical and even mental strenght and can affect the rest of the program negatively Even when landed well). I don't expect this to make a dramatic impact on men's quad race, tho it's likely multiquadsters will drop one quad or two for the sake of better consistency. For ladies, where 3A is a major challenge, it will weight much more imo

Skaters want to win (or rather, for russian Jr girls: they need to win), so it's likely that the ability to execute their content with consistent high quality will weight even more than now, meaning: less room for experiments.

Sasha has landed her 4S cleanly only now, so she had a whole season to get competitive experience without her mistakes on the 4S costing her that much in terms of results (of course she was able to be clean on everything else.). Same for Rika (tho she has other issues...like popping 3A into 1A...not even 2A :13877886:Poor Rika. Sasha doesn't pop). While Rika's mistakes were costly, she still managed to qualify for gpf thanks to 3A bv, even if iirc some of her 3A in her gp were with step out or fall, so negative goe. She had plenty of international high level competition experience without her mistakes really hurting her (well, with the exception of worlds:tumblr_inline_ncmif7esGm1rpglid:)

Now think about a Russian Jr girl who wants to do a quad: if she falls, the bv won't hold her scores up and in russian super competitive field, with people that can reasonably get very high goe on triples,  it could result in her losing the chance to even qualify for gp...

of course it's not a given that Sasha will be able to land her quads cleanly next season,  but she now has the experience of pulling herself togheter after a mistake, she learned how to pace her energy well so she can still do all her other jumps with high quality, and she has the confidence to land those jumps when the stakes are high. Rika got a different kind of experience but hopefully it will still be helpful in her growth. She still has way more experience with the ups and downs of a 3A layout than people like Wakaba and Kaori. Experience and confidence can decide medals (like we saw at Olympics, not only in relationship to Yuzu but in general e.g. Canadian veterans doing very well, Alina keeping it together despite her mistake...)

:iagree:

I know some people think she is not ready for senior, and without medals at gpf and worlds she wouldn't have that much reputation making her debut, but I think that becoming senior would actually help her: less pressure to deliver and honestly I think the international competition is more stifling among juniors right now (where she is expected to do well, so double pressure). On the other side, maybe she would benefit from that kind of pressure, but it could also hurt her more.

I haven't followed Rika before this season, so maybe my perception is skewed, but imo it would be better if she started to climb the senior field with her bv, which is more competitive among senior rn (without pops of course:tumblr_inline_ncmifiE3IT1rpglid:) and starting building on pcs.

Do jr skaters who can't deliver under pressure usually get much more consistent if they stay junior longer?

maybe she could have a chat with the 3A lover who doesn't win all his comps but wins when it matters?:9:

Of course she can have a chat with her senpai Satoko, too, but while consistent, her

consistency has something to do with her jumps not being all that textbook and she can't help with the "crashing into a wall' part:peek:

You need to be able to move your fingers to jump because you have to "pull" your arms into the rotation. While it's not like you *need* to clench your fists or whatever to rotate, skaters have been doing it for their entire lives and it's difficult to do it any other way. At least I remember reading something about Alissa Czisny having a broken finger and it made it impossible for her to jump triples in the meantime.

Am I the only one who thght that eunsoos costumes were oversexualized for a jr skater??? I heard there was a costume deduction

We've been discussing this all junior season long! I thought so, too ... I didn't know abt any costume deduction, tho

I checked protocols for WJC again now and Eunsoo had no deductions in her SP or her free skate. Where is all this nonsense coming from?
