Do they give those scores to him though? Mmh. That's the problem. Max and Angelo talked about this in the 4th episode or something, If I'm not mistaken. Especially in the Free, the way in which Shoma racks up points is quite impressive.

By the way, rinkmate ID'ed Shoma's steps in SP before the 4F. Mohawks (back to forward to back), though done quickly and on a straight line, not held on an edge for a significant enough duration so it looks like a wiggle/butt twitch. They are steps, but definitely basic.

Btw, looking at Boyang's SP, he also does the mohawk thingy, though either due to better edges or due to camera angle, it doesn't look as twitchy (might be because he bothers to move his arms a bit). I'm not sure why guys seem to like this entrance so much.  But he also does do a right back rocker before switching to his left forward edge for the axel take off, which is nice.  Javi's steps in SP this time are rolling 3's.

Actually he did better than some of the chinese fans were thinking about in the QQ live broadcast (a lot were casually joking that he also bombs his home GP). Realistically, I think Boyang is still adjusting to a) a music and choreographic style that is pretty much a 180 change from his previous style; b) focusing more on skating skills and choreography than jumps; c) media attention-they really ramped up the media focus on him this year in China, and he's gone out and said he wants to grab a medal of Chinese men's figure skating, lots of pressure there.  Not to mention the drastic change in style is happening in an Oly year, where everyone else plays safe. The boy has some guts.

Now his issue is definitely his arms, but that is something that I'm sure he'll work on. Still a bit of time before 2022.  The change in China, to allow Zhao and Shen to head our skating fed definitely points to more choreographic and artistry focus. Now, going forward, I'm wondering if Boyang would ever end up with Misha Ge as choreographer, since Misha is well loved in China, and speaks Chinese (this solves the language barrier issue)?

LOL maybe i'm being too picky on boyang (i critique out of love!) but i guess i'm too used to the gold standard that is yuzu's skating (artistry + skating skills + jumps + performance + emotion) so...

i mean, if you ask me, every young skater should aim for skating like yuzu's so...

Oh no, don't worry. Boyang boy is pretty hard realist on himself, for all his smiles. While his replies in the interviews seem pretty standard, his facial expressions were pretty serious in contrast to the lighter tone he took in replying. A couple rinkmates are in wechat groups with people who practice in Beijing (not the national team rink though), and the impression they have of Boyang is that personality wise and attitude towards skating in particular, is very similar to Yuzu. Boyang breathes skating, he almost doesn't think of anything else. His family (mom too) takes care of everything outside of skating. I'm surprised he even shops, honestly.

I don't doubt a lot of male skaters want to approach the ideal that is Yuzu's skating, just so few seem to work towards that. In Boyang's case, he probably saw a superb skater who happens to have a build that is similar to his, so what's holding back from imitation? And in the process of trying, he'll probably get his own style of skating established. So I can't wait to see that, and I'm again, delighted he ventured out to try Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. For his previous years, it was all about getting the technicals locked down solid, so now he can afford to be more creative (though skating skills, he might want to poke Han Cong too). I have some hope now with Zhao and Shen at the helm-they've asked Tracy Wilson before for skating drills to improve skating skills (forgot which interview), and I don't doubt those drills are standard fare now on the Chinese National Team..

"as I received low component scores"...? umm okay? did you read someone else's scores instead of yours javi? :slinkaway:

Is the outrage going to continue here? Or would the judging and the tech panel calls be saner? Stay tuned!

Max kills me every time: "If there was justice in this world, when speaking about quadruple jumps in figure skating, you would hear the name of Kevin Reynolds, who was one of the first ever to insert three quadruples in his FS and two in the Short".

He still forgot that Kevin's quads always received UR calls back then

Oh he knows! He probably remembers every score ever given since the CoP system change LOL but, you know, let's give recognitions when they're due, right? Kevin was always pretty brave, as a skater.
