They have so many athletes to choose from, why Yuma in particular?

And although I will criticize JSF for their choices, Yuma at least has the technical chops to make the scores, well, plausible at least. Unlike, say, some of the Eteri girls.

Yes, Yuma has been quite consistent in his competitions (like Nathan he had a fluke in Italy with his SP). He has a higher possibility to medal in Beijing than Shoma honestly (in part due to his curiously high GOE/PC scores). Honestly, at all of Yuma's competitions thus far he's pretty much had a walk in the park. No other man has had consistent results this season and Yuzu is still a HUGE wildcard.

But I don't like Yuma's programs this season. As some have pointed out his SP is very juniorish and I feel he looks more stressed than happy or carefree like he should. It's not until the jumps are over he relaxes (which is a common problem of skaters and is a pet peeve of mine).

The thing is they didn’t have to overscore Yuma that much, he could have still won. But these blunt overscoring not only kills the credibility of the sport as whole but also kills the motivations of the skaters for improvement too.

Honestly, I can’t help but to lose enthusiastic for overscored skaters. Especially, it makes me sad for all the other skaters who work hard (or even harder than these overscored ones) but never get rewarded properly. What a sad “sport”.  :gaah:

After the streaming my youtube feed suggested this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mavIvxjtw4

Almost ten years ago....a quality in everything that cannot be matched by anyone and anything we have seen so far in this season's Grand Prix, at least in the men field. And look at the PCS score....

Anyway, I wanted to post it not to be polemic, but because it cleared my eyes and blowed again my mind and I thought I'd share it with everyone.

Yuma does have beautiful speed and flow out of his jumps when they are done well. Compared to Nathan, who is always tight and scratchy,  Yuma's jumps are lovely. At least, that is what I'm seeing.

But his PCS are only a little bit behind Jason's? Now we know where the JSF politiking is going. That is just not plausible. With Rika at the moment being MIA there is no woman to try to realistically push in a fight with the Russians, and Yuzu is questionable (not that he ever gets their support) so Yuma it is. I just wish he was a year or two further along with his development.

I can't watch the skates yet, but it seems it was a bit of splat fest before Yuma? If that's true it makes the judges WAY more susceptible to overscoring someone (especially if they're near the last skater). But bravo to Yuma for keeping it together! Sounds like he deserved first but perhaps by not so much?

That being said it's very clear the JSF has thrown their whole weight behind Yuma. No one else of team Japan is getting the marks he's getting (PCs/GOEs especially).

The thing is, Yuma didn't go perfectly clean, either. He made a mistake on his 3A landing. And there were a few nice skates before him. If Yuma would've been perfectly clean, the score would be more acceptable - still overscored, but more acceptable. But not like this, with a mistake. It's ridiculous how overscored he is.

I agree that the JSF has thrown their whole weight behind Yuma. It's so frustrating for me to see figure skating having become this joke of a "sport" in which it doesn't matter how good someone's performance is. It only matters that they're supported by a big fed. :yznotimpressed:

Get popcorn for the battle of USFS vs JSF politicking for their annointed ones

Or get booze, whichever

Yep. I should get some popcorn for the GPF. Who knows which fed's politicking has more clout? Or who can afford to bribe the judges more?

But as it often is in such a case, when two people quarrel, a third rejoices. It should become quite entertaining. :giggle:

I hope there will be some kind of justice and the truly best competitor wins at the Olympics. One can still hope.

That's my feeling too. When I see how certain skaters are ridiculously overscored and given rewards far beyond what they've delivered, it makes me really lose interest in them and in figure skating as a whole.

The thing that makes sport exciting is the fact that you don't know what the result will be beforehand. If you already know who will win a competition, it's not a sport anymore. And why would you watch figure skating then? The skating of the so-called top skaters is getting uglier and uglier. It's only about crappy, cheated jumps and fed politicking.

I'm so glad that Yuzu's career already started more than ten years ago. He had the chance to skate and thrive during a phase in which the scoring was halfway fair or, at least, more or less reasonable. Younger skaters who have only recently started their senior careers aren't that lucky. Unless they're the chosen one by a fed. :yznotimpressed:

What the judging panel ‘feel’ about the performance pretty much sums it up tbh…

I’m not sure where this narration of Yuma being a great jumper comes from but he is literally doing tributes to Eteri with his lutz and to Shoma with his prerotation on his toe. So, nope, he is not a textbook great jumper at all lol

I know that not watching after Wakaba is the right decision LOL.

Re: Yuma, the kid's PCS should be around 40-41 ish, 42 on a very good (inflation-heavy) day. He has very good SS, but everything else is lacking (esp IN & PE). On the jumps, I have big issues with his F & Lz for obvious reasons. The rest are passable.

Well I rooted for Yuma so much the last couple of seasons, but now I see the scoring inflation has kicked in I must admit my interest begins to wane - his performance was poor yesterday imo - eg you cannot skate to "when you're smiling" without smiling!! (and of course I know the scoring is not Yuma's fault but that is how it makes me FEEL!). There were some lovely skates (thinking of women's too) yesterday but when Yuma gets higher IN and PE (9s)  than Wakaba (7s and 8s) (and in Warsaw Cup in Ice Dance a newish Russian pair got nearly the same PCS as Paula and Piper!!) it just totally spoils the experience of watching doesn't it. This "hobby" of mine just causes me fury!!! That's not how it's supposed to work!! Honestly yesterday I was raging and that's even when it has nothing to do with Yuzuru! ....although I suppose it does; this GP scoring sets things up for the major comps later in the season, so it WILL affect Yuzuru I expect and not in a good way, sighs.

Don't rush back too quickly Yuzuru, make sure you are as physically and mentally strong as you can be because you will need to be!! You do so much for this sport to make it beautiful and loved by the audience....but it seems it is intent on self destruction if it continues to follow this current path.

You know what can make his SP more likeable a lil bit? Him stop making shocked pikachu face.

Also I realized just now he has higher IN and PE than Wakaba's. Kill me now lordy.
