Thank you for the streaming and I agree with you, @Henni147!   Nathan is a great athlete and I have a lot of respect for him, but it is unlikely that he will continue to compete after Beijing 2022 as he turns his attention to the "rest of his life".   He deserves all the accolades for his achievements.  Yet it is unlikely that his performances will be remembered like this H&L 2017, or Seimei, Chopin and the future Tenchi performances.  Even now, I don't go back to see his past performances for pure enjoyment... do you?  It's too bad he didn't polish Nemesis, which could have become a legacy performance... 

 

It was great to go back to that critical year before the Olympics, and how much he was struggling after the spectacular 2015/2016 season when he appeared to have peaked too early before the Olympics.  I had fun translating this 2016 interview with Matsuoka Shuzo (the famous "I love being on the edge of the cliff, Yahooy" interview).   In parsing his words sentence by sentence, I was able to see better how much he was struggling to find a way to adjust his mental energy, especially after his 2015 Seimei performances.  In this Matsuoka interview, he still talks a bit like a teenager (in the original Japanese), still struggling to articulate his thoughts in explicit terms.  It was hard to catch that nuance in the English translation, because his teenage-ness comes out in the declension of verbs that cannot be directly translated.  By comparing this interview to his more recent interviews after Tenchi, it's amazing to see how much he has matured mentally in so many ways.  He is no longer a boy...  

 

The "Flow" that he achieved with H&L 2017 Worlds is something he could not easily repeat, and the injuries also compounded his continuing struggles through 2018 PC and beyond.  So now, in 2021, it is deeply gratifying to see that 2020 turned out to be the year of "reset" and he has been able to hone his mental skills and to induce the "Flow" through a combination of well-designed choreography and refined mental training.  The whole year of 2020 was, for him - as well as for all of us -  the year of "Shugyou"　修行:  Buddhist training = long meditation, deep reflection (of sutras, etc), washing the floor boards, receiving alms, praying under ice cold water fall, showing compassion to others in the face of hate and ridicule, and so on.       We are all  becoming a 修行僧 (Buddhist monk in training),  like Lord Kenshin.  

 

PS:  A non-Yuzu legacy program that I will likely re-watch over and over again: Roman Sadovsky's free program from last season and his short from this season.

Thank you for the stream!  It's so interesting to see the way he was thinking before PC, and how much he has continued to develop since then!  I loved Akiko Suzuki's effort to show his back counter 3A and camel spins.   I remember watching it live on Japanese TV at the time but didn't know where to find the clips to rewatch.  I wonder how he is doing with 4Lz now...

As a native speaker, I never studied Japanese as a language, so I don't have the technical knowledge or terms to describe the changes in his speaking patterns.  But after watching the past interviews on this livestream, I noticed how his interviews after JNats 2020 have become more profound and reflective, and he is able to articulate his thoughts in ways that reveal the complex ideas behind them in a measured and - how can I say this? - grammatically "controlled" manner.  Just like his jumps, he used to express many interesting ideas but they came out in bursts of brilliance that seemed at times chaotic and ad hoc.  You can see that he had so much he wanted to express, and used to scramble to find metaphors and images to convey the feeling - like "I love being on the edge of the cliff, Yahooy!"   Now, he is able to express his feelings and ideas with greater refinement, and his choice of verb conjugation somehow enhances that impression.  Someone who has studied the language professionally will need to do a text analysis to pinpoint how he manages to convey this feeling.   

 

I have studied Fus-ha (classical Arabic), where the verb declensions (accusative, indicative, subjunctive) are captured in the verb form and are critical for conveying profoundly different nuances with just a single vowel change.  It's not possible to translate these nuances directly, and one has to resort to extra words (or footnotes) to capture these variations...
