General Yuzuru Chat

Recommended Posts

In the end, it matters more to me that he gets recognition than that we international fans do. Although the two are somewhat related. I think it diminishes him a bit when he is portrayed as some sort of Japanese national craze, as opposed to a widely-recognized genius.

That's my issue mainly. I don't want the idea to be that he is only important for Japanese skating. He is important for skating, period, and that shouldn't have a nationality.

I once saw a banner saying "fly yuzu" and sth to that effect but has a red maple leaf on the side that shows its maker is obviously canadian. quite clever actually. I think there should be more international banners like this

Picture I took at Worlds in Helsinki:

Yes I remember I have seen this banner "Maple leaf loves Yuzuru" in the Hartwall arena.

I am Canadian, I am not Japanese and I have traveled many times to see Yuzuru skate in competitions.

Last year I have been in Autumn Classics 2016 in Montreal, my hometown, in Skate Canada 2016 in Mississauga, in GPF 2016 in Marseille, and World 2017 in Helsinki.

I find it annoying that the world' journalists and skating commentators on TV are always saying that only Japanese fans are travelling to see Yuzuru, as if he is only loved and admired by Japanese fans, not by skating fans at large around the world. I have met many Yuzuru's fans who are not Japanese, just like me Canadian at the competitions, people come from different countries in Europe, French, Russian, Italian etc..., American, Canadian, Chinese.

You don't have to love only the skaters or athletes because they are from your country.

But it is hard to make them, journalists and commentators, to recognize that.

Speaking of the Icenetwork person of the year, I was reading back on it and apparently Yuzu was only nominated once, in the 2015-2016 season, and not even in the 2013-2014 season when he won the Olympics, Worlds and GPF in the same season. Are this year's nominees done or does he still have the possibility of also being nominated?

Not that this is much important and icenetwork is quite US centric, but it seems a bit strange to me if he were to not be at least nominated this year as himself (or him and Shoma as part of some Japanese men's skating powerhouse) and not just as a mention in the footnotes of his admittedly huge and dedicated fanbase.

Then again, Javi didn't get nominated for the 2015-2016 season when he won Worlds again so... :nah:

That's odd, but it looks like their lists are usually very North American-centered.

These lists are usually fluff, and fluff that you think you can sell/can bring you clicks so I am not surprised if they're picking based on what they think is appropriate for their audience vs who might really be on top of the sport. It's how that goes.

I read somewhere that his dad does baseball so he probably inherited the skills. And he did say he like baseball :space:

Judging by the Galas where they throw the signed balls, seems like he still has a good arm :)

I thought he played it seriously (or sort of)? Didn't he have to choose at a certain point between figure skating and baseball?

I don't believe so. He was mostly playing baseball with crumpled paper wads as ball and magazines rolled up as bats back when he was still a baby skater. He wasn't too focused at practice and so his parents often told him if he didn't like figure skating, he's free to give it up and switch to baseball (Asaichi interview). Competitions used to be his main motivation, and he hated practice. So he credits his parents' approach as being one of the reasons why he didn't end up hating competitions as well, in addition to practice. Instead, well, we end up with a true student of figure skating :) :)

He never played seriouss baseball as far as I know, but I understand that his father played ball when he was younger and/or coached baseball. Therefore, he was probably introduced at a young age to baseball and learned how to throw and catch, etc., with the proper technique.

Kurt Browning has said on a number of occasions how he played catch with Yuzuru when he was choreographing a number for him (probably "Hello, I Love You") and Yuzuru had quite the arm and knew how to throw the ball.

Completely agreeing with people saying that journalists not recognizing Yuzuru's international fanbase is a problem, not for us (because I think Yuzuru knows we exist and that's way enough) but because it is evidence that he's not just the most loved skater in Japan, he is a skating genius and the whole world has seen that. I don't think many more skating champions have ever had such a fanbase. Actually, I think no one ever did.
