A couple individuals have responded to my assertion that Yuzu is not yet the GOAT.  I agree fundamentally with their assessments of him and I have to say that I personally believe he is the Greatest of All Time.  In my assessment of him I was being a devil's advocate, bringing out the reasons why the unconvinced remain unconvinced.  And I do disagree with some in saying they will remain perpetually unconvinced.   There are those who are by nature unconvinced of anything, not just skating.  That is their nature.  But I have seen over the years that Yuzu has been skating a consensus reached that he is the dominant skater of this generation and they see no reason why he will lose that status.  What I was putting forth was the conditions that will bring the fence-sitters onto his side.  It's not those who resolutely oppose Yuzu that I'm talking about.  It's those who haven't quite made up their minds.  I'm sure there are still some hockey fans who think Wayne Gretzky was not the greatest hockey player of all time.  The same goes for Michael Jordan and going far back, maybe Babe Ruth.  There are always those who will take a rigidly opposite view on such an issue.  I mean there are still some people who subscribe to the idea that the world is flat.  But if Yuzu dominates a second Olympic cycle like he dominated the recent one and then takes the gold at Beijing, the fence-sitters will by and large come around. 

 

The thing is that GOAT status is not only generated by the fans of a particular sport but by those who are viewing the sport from a position outside that sport's culture.  It's like that in politics where the successful candidates are those who not only bring out their party members to vote but a sufficient number of independents to win the race.  Those people are the ones who only go out to vote because they see a reason to vote.  They are the ones who in a sport like figure skating only deal with it at the Olympics.  That's why Olympic achievements are so important for sports that only come into widespread focus every four years.  I saw a number of references in recent articles and commentaries by individuals outside of figure skating saying that Yuzu MIGHT be the greatest male skater ever.  They were bringing up that possibility while not yet subscribing to it.  If he does what I and everyone else here wants him to do then after Beijing in 2022 there will be few non-skating reporters and fans out there not subscribing to the idea that Yuzuru Hanyu can outskate every male skater who has preceded him.  It's like in politics.  Yuzu has to nail the independent vote to succeed.  I and everyone else here feel he's already won the election.  The thing is that there are still a lot of uncounted votes out there.  We'll have to wait until all those late precincts come in to finally celebrate his victory.

I have written similar things before but we can only talk about this topic subjectively. Firstly before you use "all time" phrase, when is the "time" actually ends? We have to make sure before  "all time" can be discussed,  the time itself has to run out. Someone needs to check the time flow and tell us all -  "Okay folks that's it. There are no more time running so you can talk about all time now" 

 

GOAT cannot be discussed objectively because what "great" can be vary from one person to another and there's no way that everyone agrees on something is truly "great" never mind "greatest". Apples or oranges, some like it and some don't. What you find beautiful can be very different from what others find beautiful.

It's been 42 years since the oldest model (1973) and the (near) latest model (2015). 

 

...and talk about the year 2015. What's happened in 2015?

 

 

 

 Yuzu had achieved 3 things through this performance - the program that's made into the record book of ISU (total score 322.40), into the history book of figure skating (the first person to break 200 (fs) and 300 (total) point barrier) as well as left a big and long lasting impression in the memories of tens of thousands of people. I've seen young Yuzu talking about that he wants to do a program/performance that is memorable for many people. He's a man of his word for sure!

 

To me, the question of GOAT status for Yuzu is not  that important. What he has given to me as well as the world is something that cannot be erased as long as I or the people who appreciate Yuzu live. And "all time" that relevant to me only lasts while I'm on this planet (for this case is the earth)  So go and find your treasure of GOAT if you haven't found one.  For me, I will treasure what I've found thank you very much Mr Hanyu!!

Honestly, I don't want to hear anything about Yuzu needing to win in Beijing to prove himself. Not even as a joke. Anyone not convinced already is simply not worth the effort.

 

This kid has most probably ruined his body already and, if Javi's words are anything to go by, will probably spend the rest of his life in pain, all in order to get two Olympic Golds. IF he goes to Beijing, I want him to do it because he wants it and he can do it. Not because he feels he has anything left to prove to anyone. I would love for him to win a third gold, but he's already proven himself and it's high time he puts his health first. I would love nothing more than his health allowing him to compete for many years to come, but I do not want him to force himself in any way that will affect that health anymore, because he feels he still needs to prove himself. He really doesn't. Not to anyone who would be worth that effort and sacrifice. (Of course, the 4A quest is different... he wants that badly, so it can't helped. And he's mostly doing it for himself, anyway.)
