  1. Once might be a misfortune - twice looks like carelessness
  2. 5 times Japanese champion?
  3. Well that would explain a lot - though how any self respecting 'costume designer' could admit to producing that is beyond me. I at least thought it was Chans input that made it so dull, but if he doesn't care it's all down to the 'designer'. Depressing.
  4. I know he was referencing the film, but he didn't need to copy it outright- imagine if Yuzuru had been literal with Onmyouji- he'd never have got onto the ice, he certainly couldn't have jumped in it!
  5. Patrick Chan is the founding member of the Boring Costume Fraternity- can you even call that thing a 'costume'?
  6. As long as he doesn't wear his overalls from FAOI
  7. Good Lord - I don't look for a couple of days and there's another Phantom panic? Is anyone doing a graph of the Phantom/ Seimei fits that set in from time to time? I said it pages ago and I say it again- have a little faith. Whatever he picks will be good - and it's his career not ours! Still don't think he'll go back to PotO- too many bad memories.
  8. Do they ever make the announcement on a Saturday? Because I have the worst track record in 2017- missed 4CC, Worlds and WTT due to family commitments, unavoidable social stuff, etc and this Saturday I am catering a large family gathering and that would start the new season as the old one ended.
  9. That move is terrifying and the physical effect equally so. I wonder whether anyone has done similar tests on any of the quad maniacs or has any plans to do so? The reason they gave it up is absolutely typical - the judges and commentators didn't notice! Unbelievable- I suppose slo mo was too newfangled to be used. I remember the first time I saw Bolero- watched them get into position and wondered what the hell was going on as they moved about on the ice without getting up. The whole thing really was a bit startling- the usual thing was to have a programme with several climaxes and lulls and to have something that started low key and just kept building to a climax was a completely new idea. I also remember how invested the entire country was by that stage after all that success- it was a bit like a nationwide version of this forum, everyone waiting for news of the new programme and then major anxiety over whether the judges would accept it or hate it, was it too risky for an Olympic year, and of course they didn't have an Olympic title and were sure to r**** afterwards, so why didn't they keep the experimental stuff for the ice shows. Glad they didn't.
  10. Sometimes as a teacher in higher education, trying to give a rounded education, you put several theories out there, to spark debate, to get people to think things through, sometimes as part of a larger picture that only emerges as the course comes to an end. Which is ok if it's purely academic and no one is in a position to go out and try it before they've seen where it fits in the general scheme of things.
  11. I can't help wondering whether his professor and/or Brian Orser realise he's trying to apply his education as he's going along. The professor might need to be a bit thoughtful about what to put into that brain. His studies might also have an effect on that intensity that BO finds too much sometimes, either raising or lowering it, and knowing that it's possibly a factor might help the coaching team.
  12. Possibly the bad experiences some of us have had elsewhere of the arbitrary removal of posts with no explanation causes us to react quite strongly when it seems to be happening here. I think we all understand that it isn't easy to decide how best to deal with this sort of thing.
  13. @yuzuangel re Jason Brown I do indeed- thank you for posting it. Isn't it elegant? Look and learn Fernandez and Chan
  14. Worlds 2017 - Max -'97.08 is a scandal......it's not acceptable'
  15. Come on - be fair -he's worn a lot worse in his time
  16. It's a fluttery panel on the side/right hand of the back - cue protests from the haters of the boobskirt.
  17. Those are fabulous
  18. Just been saying how much I like Satokos new dress on Team Japan thread and remembered this thread. It's very female oriented, so I'm going to throw in a mans costume I really liked last season - Jason Browns grey slightly military tunic. It was elegant and subdued but still a costume - and for those who are bothered by such things, which I'm not personally, it was a very masculine look. Someone circulate the name of his designer among the membership of the I'm A Bloke so I Have a Boring Costume Fraternity.
  19. I love Satoko's dress - asymmetry, lace, velvet and a floaty skirt- it's perfect.
  20. If I get my Edward Scissorhands wish, or my Sweeney Todd one come to that, we could get a very interesting dark costume- with gloves
  21. Can't stop thinking about that judge- the possibilities:- a) he's paying lip service to the politically correct view but his bias leaks in. b) he means what he says until his own son is mentioned, at which point he remembers that a significant number of his fellow judges will take it very badly and his knee jerk reaction is to protect him, whatever the right and just view of the matter may be c) a bit of both end result is still depressing. Yuzuru does manage to rise above it - I think both JC and JW said at different times that the only thing to do is just to be too good to be denied- and that is exactly what he does, bless him. Long may it continue.
  22. Thank you That is interesting - you sort of expect the objectionable coach and the macho posturing from some skaters, but the really worrying individual is the international judge who tries to talk the talk but can't stop his bias spilling into the interview. As you say - depressing. And I'm very glad that Jason still has his pony tail.
  23. Seems like a wasted opportunity- I really like some of the music, but when you watch the whole competition (or as much as the country you live in allows ) you do see an awful lot of repetition and mediocre/ tedious/cliched music, badly chopped together. I suppose it comes down to money in the end- do you need another expense - and more importantly I suppose, would the judges notice? Can the majority of the people involved in the sport tell the difference? I think the reaction to Seimei shows that people do respond to new themes if they are done well- and that's the crux of the matter - quality - carefully put together in that case but there is readily available good, different music out there if they went to look ( or employed a cash strapped musician to do it for them - and maybe splice the bits together in a musically acceptable way?)
  24. I feel really sorry for the American girls over the 'looks' business. The ladies singles seems to be their main focus, bit like ladies gymnastics- it must be an extra slice of pressure on top of everything else.
