I thought that Yuzu had quit being a mushroom long before Sochi, but he looks a bit mushroomy in these videos compared to now, and he looks so young…

About the room assignment in Sochi, there were many comments/reports that contradict each other. Probably it was changed several times depending on the situation, like assigning a room for each man before Men’s event and once it was over each lady could use a room or something like that. Yuzu was spotted in the footage filmed in the restaurant in the Olympic village aired before the team event or Men’s event, so he must have been staying there at the beginning of the Olympic games. However, after he won the OGM he was very busy and sick (he had swollen tonsils,) so he probably moved to the multi-support house provided by Japan Sports Council. Thank you for the video and translation I missed this program and was curious about what Nobu said about Yuzu. Glad to be able to see it here. I think singcarom’s explanation is mostly correct, but may I correct one thing in behalf of Yuzu? On how Yuzu “bullies” Nobu, he says that Yuzu tells him “これでボケて (Kore de bokete.)” This doesn’t mean Yuzu makes Nobu look stupid. When they are together, sometimes Yuzu suddenly cues Nobu to make jokes on things they encounter, saying “これでボケて.” Boke is Japanese name for the funny man of a double act, and bokete means “play funny man (imperative form,)” which Nobu actually can do quite well and likes to do. In some fluff piece we can actually see how Yuzu cues Nobu and how Nobu reacts. However, in a short footage inserted in FaOI Kobe (where they were eating takoyaki,) Yuzu was playing funny man by singing a song made by a comedian and Nobu was playing straight man by decisively dismissing the joke as being too old, so their roles might be switchable.

The announcer and some skating magazines published after Sochi tried to use that name, so those who were around that time should know the term. I don’t like the idea of replacing current SP and FS with two new programs to evaluate a skater’s technical skills and artistry separately. Firstly, as some people have already said in earlier posts, you need to have technical skills to express something artistically, especially when you express it with your body. If you are going to present something like Yoko Ono’s Grapefruit or John Cage’s 4’33’’, all you need is your ideas, but that is not what ISU is expecting, I suppose. Secondly, it’s not technique vs. artistry, it’s jumps vs. other technical skills. Why always mislead people into believing that technique and artistry are two different things, and jumps have nothing to do with artistry? A jump with difficult entry/exit that perfectly fits the music is not artistic? To land a jump very softly to let the audience appreciate the soft sound of a flute is just athletic? I agree with this. Actually, I found the idea of expressing the music as a dance of wandering soul interesting, but the program itself didn’t seem to convey the story very well and the ending looked unnatural. It might look different though, with appropriate costume and in high definition video. It might also look great as an exhibition program with some help of lighting and props. However, I think she can present a beautiful program with this kind of music without such background and mime. I hope her team gives it a try.
