Also, Yuzu must do the SP in the Team Event because it's the only guaranteed competition he can actually have before the individual event. Contrary to Sochi, making the FS isn't as likely (especially if the North Korea pair participate for the united Korea team) so he either does the SP or he risks not doing the Team Event at all. JSF must know that and so must he.

Or maybe Yuzu can skip TE and have one more week of training at TCC? :13877886: Well, it's just a thought that crossed my mind, SP in TE seems to be more logical scenario.

That's an option too. He either does the SP in the Team Event or he skips it altogether, I guess. But then he'd be going into the individual event cold turkey.

Would the united Korean team be strong enough to make the free?  I would think Japan's biggest competition for the free would be China and Italy.

It's not that the Korean can make the free. It's that their placements in each event can lower the total scoring for the Japanese team, like pushing further down the Japanese pair, arguably their weakest discipline, and thus earning them less points.

Ah, the Spoiler Effect, good point.  I think it's going to be close between Japan, Italy and China, so you're right, it will come down to a few placements.

I really wish they would change the rules for the Team Event, it's far too heavily weighted to the short program, unlike every other skating event.

He can but at this point, knock on wood he's progressing well, if we look at it from that POV, then his biggest issue is the lack of competitions and there are no other ways to rectify that. Not that team is ideal but beggars can't be choosers. So team being ahead is good for him this time around.

Once he goes into PyeongChang his training will be more limited if he uses the official practices (40 minutes sessions twice a day, I believe, and at some point before individual event those will go down to only 1 session a day). Almost as much as competition experience again he needs runthrough time and I honestly don't know if when he started 'training' back in early January, it included still having to recover jumps or if he was ready to get back into gradually increasing runthroughs. Because the first means he might need as much training time as possible.

Then again, when will Borser be arriving in Korea with the rest of TCC anyway? Junhwan and Gabby are doing the team event, right?

Interesting theory based on coach registrations (although it could also just be the practical way to register all TCC coaches). The issue of limited practice time when at PC is a very relevant issue actually, @xeyra makes a good point, and a week is a long time to not be training at full capacity. At this point, I literally don't care as long as it's the best solution but it would be very 2017-2018 season for us to all be hoping to see Yuzu around early Feb (5th-ish), only for him to ninja for another week :13877886:

Holy crap, I don't think I can handle him not doing the team event. I was counting on it to ready my heart for singles. If he pulls it off it will be all the more amazing, though.

Better prepare the dead bunny pile now.

I think he is going to want to compete - not just for the competition after all these months but because he always wants to represent his country.  I'm sure Shoma would do a good job, but Yuzuru is the one with all the records and if there's a chance he'll come out of the gate the way he did at ACI I can't see JSU not picking him - they've said they will.

I like that idea, but if he's going to have an SP like that I'd prefer it to be at the singles. :/ Look at CoR Chopin, don't want that. But then also don't want ACI Seimei, so... I don't know. I feel as bald as Brian must be now. Maybe I should get a toupee for my birthday.

Well... it could be that he's got the kuyashii to skate an ACI Chopin right off the bat, in which case I'd prefer him to do that in the individual SP, as opposed to putting that out for the team event and ending up with CoR Chopin for the actual event. but the thought of just straight up yolo'ing it also terrifies me because ACI Chopin was a bit of an anomaly (watered down layout too) and I worry about how the whole 'all stakes concentrated in one event' situation would affect his mentality since he's also proven to be prone to overthinking in those situations (I'm still somewhat traumatised by WTT. That being said, he's also done Boston etc. that may be used to argue otherwise)

He might still do the team event long program should Team Japan make it. My guess is that after the SP portion, the standings would be Russia--> Canada--> USA--> Japan--> Italy/France-> China--> Korea--> Israel--> Germany.  And considering some of the recent moves by the IOC on the russian pairs and dance teams, Japan has a bigger shot of making it to the FS portion. On average they're only slightly weaker than US, Canada and Russia, probably tied with France and Italy (singles vs couples balance out), and more well-rounded than China, Korea, Israel and Germany.

What if he does the team short, flies to Sendai to train and then flies back to PC?

Now I can understand why Yuzuru and his team keep everything in secret. Even without any info, speculations pop up left and right and then fans stress out with anything.

Team event or not we do not know how he's gonna do in individual event. What he did in the past comps won't speak much IMO, because this is Olympic.
