[2017] GP Cup of China - Men SP & FS

Featured Replies

I woke up to watch the last 5 FS, and I was like what?!!!

1. Mikhail won and will be going to GPF!

2. Javi got 6th and won't be going to the GPF! At least Patrick had a fighting chance at NHK, just that he withdrew...but Javi....what???

3. Max Aaron won FS...who is this guy?! (I've just started watching figure skating and this is the first competition where I have heard of him)

4. Boyang, what happened to your majestic 4Lz??

In summary, this season is just full of  :eeking::eeking::eeking::eeking::eeking::eeking::eeking::eeking::eeking:!

And maybe this would push him to maybe... not retire yet?

I'm not so sure....if anything, I feel that today was very demoralizing for Javi, like it was for Patrick last week.

There's a huge difference between skaters who are settling for what they can do and deciding against risking the new ones they've been trying in practice and the one who keeps pressing forward on on all fronts.

And it's only a matter of time for those who settle to be overtaken, like what we're seeing right now. Yes, there's this argument about quantity vs quality. But, even though the quadsters are behind in terms of quality, they're not that far behind, while the uncles are very much far behind in TES. I see Boyang growing, and Nathen mentioning that he wants to focus on quality instead of quantity.

Well, honestly, Yuzu, Javi and Patrick have always been put in the same category in contrast to Chen, Uno and Boyang, but... Yuzuru really doesn't have a lot in common with them, apart from having the same coach as Javi. He is younger, so not quite in the same generation - he's in the same 'generation of type of skating', but... Yuzuru has proved that he wants to (and succeeded in) evolving with the sport, while Javier and Patrick have given signals that they have their limits, that they want to continue skating the way they know and like.

So, it's not a surprise to me that suddenly the differences between Yuzuru and Patrick and Javi are highlighted.

One other big difference is training. Yuzuru overtrained in the past and really has to pull himself back not to do the same now. Javi is the opposite. Didn't he start training since the second half of August? So, maybe it's not only a mental problem, with him.

So, your description is actually perfect. Yuzuru prepared himself for all his skating carreer for this. For now. The only thing I'm sure of is that yes, Yuzu will probably be sorry about Javi and Patrick. But he needs to focus on himself because he knows he has something else in store.

So true!!! I've mentioned it in the general chat, but suddenly it's so obvious that Yuzu's ability to use setbacks as motivations is such a representation of his strong mental strength. I've never seen Yuzu feel broken or start self-doubting when he bombs...which he actually does it quite a bit...

But he never let himself stay in disappointment and is always challenging himself to go further. I think people who said that Yuzu should stick to 4S in the SP, and less quads in the FS, will now see that playing safe is not a winning strategy. Yuzu has been 'inconsistent' for the past few years because the day he won gold in Sochi was probably the day he started planning to win PC with 2 phenomenal skates. Everything then has been a slow build up to there.

also, please go and fix your jumps, boyang

i love you but with the way you're going, it's gonna be very hard for you

your programs this year already lose the BV/TES edge you've always had over others

if you don't fix your jumps... *sigh*  it's not like you can afford to lose any more points

also, that star wars FS is a goddamn mess

i thought it was terrible ever since i saw finlandia and even with the so called improvements (which i can't really see any), it's still a TERRIBLE program

boyang needs a different choreographer

I really, really hope he will go back to La strada.... after seeing SW again... wtf, no way that program is gonna do it for him ... no connection to the music at all, the music itself is a mess ... God, Nichol really screwed him up... poor Boyang

I’m still so mad about Boyang’s FS choreography. It’s clear he hasn’t grasped any kind of idea about what he should be conveying or trying to say with it (because there IS NO THEME to the bloody program). He was totally emotionally disconnected, there was no conviction in his movements and he was barely looking up half the time. Half of it might be stamina/jumps but still. Ugh. He deserves so much better

I won’t lie, I’m slightly nervous about Yuzu but I think it comes from the emotional strain of two consecutive weeks of shock upsets more than anything he’s doing; everything feels uncertain like we can’t assume anything. We just need him to skate normally. I do worry he may be affected by Javi’s absence and maybe mood during training though, but maybe they’ll empower each other.

Aaand im gonna continue being livid about the ladies judging

Don't Javi and Yuzu train at separate rinks for at least some time? I think Gabby and Javi skate somewhere else quite a bit, from a Brian interview sometime earlier. And their training times are split, so I don't think Yuzu will catch whatever Javi got.

I know they’re in different groups and don’t train at the same time but I don’t think they live in a vacuum in the TCC. The general worry will be there, especially for the coaches and it may potentially throw off training rhythm a bit. I don’t think Yuzu’s the type to let it affect him too much (albeit he’s a creature of routine so no javi at GPF may be weird). but I mostly hope Javi can get the right help he needs.

I don't even think that all is Lori's fault. I think Boyang just skated his programs tense, without expression, minimal musical awareness and not much commitment. His high kicks have been better, we've seen him been into the choreography more too.

I think there are people Lori feels inspired by (Sui/Han, Peng/Jin, Zijun) and some she doesn't (Yu/Zhang, Han Yan and Boyang). To those people she still tries to play to their strengths (therefore Yu/Zhangs swan SP, Han Yan's thousand years, Boyang's Spiderman) but that's a hit or miss. And unfortunately this year, Boyang has two misses.

When Lori is good, she is a genius but when she's bad, she's average. Average choreography + Boyangs  limited range (yet) of SS and movements = underwhelming program.

Javi didn't qualify for gpf 13/14 either... the gpf comp before OWG in Sochi...

Just checked entry for France GP, Shoma is there too... also iirc only 4th place and above can be counted :sadPooh:

Unless Jason bombs hard enough to place under 5th next week and Javi places first in France, he's saying goodbye to GPF

i doubt javi's gonna get gold over shoma

i'm not dissing javi!!!  just stating honest opinion

even if javi gets gold, i doubt he'd make gpf with 1+6 finish...

Oh ok I totally forget shoma's there

well I guess we need to take this as a nice sign for yuzu since javi wasn't at the gpf during 13/14. We need to stay positive!!

Really I won't be surprised by anything now, ice is so slippery...

"we are the champions" not exactly the music I'd pick for this Men's event :headdesk:
