[2017] GP Skate Canada - Men SP & FS

Featured Replies

Watched guys just now (thanks to eurosport player having a replay).

I liked Jun Hwan's SP a lot, pity about URs.

Samarin landed good 4Lz and I don't know how he didn't fall flat on his face after that 3A - but in terms of choreo I'm afraid he is hopeless  (maybe better in SP, but last year in JGPF he was soooooooooo slow in FS. I don't want even talk about transitions for the lack of any).

Patrick was nice

Good skate for Shoma, good 4F and spins (black pants are much better), but for me this SP is boring  the judges obviously don't agree with me, well... not that I'm surprised.

And here I even enjoyed Jasons's SP

Wow, what an interesting exercise. I just tried. My takeaway is that he needs better choreography. The upper body doesn't match the music at all. Feels kinda random. I think Shoma has the potential for a good, musical performance, but I guess there's not much of a chance for it when he has to think about jumps jumps jumps all day.

Who does his choreography? IIRC it's his coach - he would probably benefit from a bit of outside input from a really good choreographer.

Yes, though IIRC Lambi takes a look at it later, for adjustments.

Think it needs more than 'adjustment'.

He's getting the scores anyway. When listening to him, I think this is what he cares about right now. Why complicate the program and risk mistakes when he is getting all the scores? I mean this thing had a higher TR score than LGC NHK last season. Just ... it's pointless. It's why I am not bothering to comment. It's utterly pointless. It's not just Shoma too. Apparently Samarin has better SS/PCS than Cha. Well ok then.

Depressingly true :smiley-angry020:

There's still the free for  patrick. I hope he skates as usual and for shoma, look at that chicken leg he got:rofl:but even clean it was far from the wr yet... but i hope he doesn't burn the fuel too early... i just woke up and the thread is only at 13 pages:laughing: easy to catch up..

That chicken drumstick was adorable, I want to see Shoma hug it.

I agree....keeping up with this thread is so much easier and relaxing. =P

I've the feeling Shoma is going to be consistent all season and his scores will rise with that. His FS today will likely be clean with maybe a couple of shakier landings and I predict him to hit 300+ again. Not as high as Lombardia because he'll be missing 5 points in BV but 300+ nonetheless.

As a Yuzu fan, though, and seeing the trends in scoring in past competitions, the only thing I can say is that he's going to need to deliver a bit more 'consistently' than he's been able to from now on, if he wants to keep ahead. I don't mean going squeaky clean all the time. I mean, mostly, not popping things. And maybe going clean with his SP more often too. This doesn't mean he can't go into the Olympics, hit his only two clean programs in the season and still win, but it might make it much harder for him. Judges want some excitement for the Olympics and Shoma and Nathan, as the closest contenders in terms of both tech and rising PCS, will likely keep on delivering increasingly through the season and thus they will be closing in on the GOE and PCS differences to the top guys. We already see Shoma winning the PCS here against Patrick Chan, though with Patrick having been sloppy, I'm not at all surprised.

My prediction for the GPF is that Shoma and Nathan will qualify with two golds and the rest will have a mix of medals.

That's why being a Yuzu fan stressed me out a lot....    But I guess I'll trust Yuzu to deliver when it matters most. When he's in the zone, all the magic would make the stress and anxiety worthwhile.

And if Shoma and Nathan qualify with 2 golds, will that make them favorites for gold for the GPF? :slinkaway:

Shoma skating before Patrick and Jason...will that make the SS difference larger in the eyes of the judges?

Wow this really put things into perspectives...And now my salt is spilling over lol:salty: (because I freaking adore LGC as a program )

I should learn from you..And just stop commenting on the judging since 1) it's useless against the judges' bias 2) it probably give some people opportunity to jump on Yuzu fan for "overreacting" about shoma scores *shrug

I’m happily ignoring all the Shoma blabla. Just wanted to say I thought he was amazing, I love Winter, love  Shoma’s skating and jumps, and want to start a petition to the ISU to make a tie something more than only virtually impossible for the OGM.

Omg sorry guys, I just came back from concert and I was wondering...

When is Men's FS???

Okay...I've decided. Shoma's steps before the 4Flip, I'm going to dub the "butt twitch." This seems cute enough.

I think he tried to do a choctaw before doing a weird...I don't know step? Mohawk? I don't know what that left foot was doing up front dangling there?  I'll let people who can actually ID these steps decide. But I'm going to call it the "butt twitch" because it is reminiscent of a choctaw attempt on a shallow/straight line edge, with the upper body not following through on the lower body turns. Hence it gets "twitchy" on the hips area. Thankfully he's swapped out of the grey pants, because the first time I saw this in slow-mo, the image reminded me of a german sausage (I got off a 4 hour skating practice and was hungry okay?).

Not sure why he doesn't just do power 3 turns into it.

Don’t be sad when Yuzuru wins Olympic. Because Yuzuru will win, and there will be no tie.
