[2017] GP Skate Canada - Men SP & FS

Featured Replies

Hi I'm a new here, been lurking here since forever:P

About the rise of PCS from the sQuads, I see that coming tbh, Same when Yuzu reached 45 points PCS in the GPF before Olympic with his WR program, Judges want the Oly more exciting

so I think Yuzu is the new Chan and the sQuads esp Shoma is the new Yuzu for this Oly season

And I believe that Yuzu just like the rest of us, see 'that' coming too, that why the baby 4lz is born

I'm a bit :/ about Shoma. Obviously his strategy to do lots of small events and ice shows to not lose momentum is working pretty well for him but I'm worried he's gonna get burnt out.

As for his PCS... His IN/PE is his strong point and deserves to be pretty high but I feel kinda similar here as I did with his Lombardia scoring...I don't think he's performing this SP at the level he was performing LIL or Loco at the end of last season so I'm not sure I agree with 9.5/9.75/10s (wtf j2) in his IN/PE/CO. In this performance I wasn't that into the composition at all tbh. I'm a fan of him despite his flaws but his program choice this season are so bland, his SP hold more promise but I'm still kind of...meh about it.

J7 giving everything in PCS 9.75 is the clearest display of what is wrong with PCS scoring right now. Just. What on earth. It's like they were barely watching and weren't thinking about it  at all. Too much giving high PCS for reputation, or as a gift for big technical elements, plus boosting scores in one area because the skater has strengths in another area of PCS... it's a mess and it makes me mad that ISU is focusing on messing with BVs and GOE scoring but leaving PCS as this joke.

I like Shoma a lot and he did really well and deserved to be 1st after SP but his PCS scoring is doing him a disservice...

I think it's going to be tight through the year between Yuzu and Shoma (and Nathan...and maybe Boyang but Boyang does't seem to get the same level of PCS and GOE inflation for loads of quads the way Nathan and Shoma do) but Yuzu seems to thrive when he has to fight in a competition so I think having Shoma right there on the rise will motivate him and Yuzu has the tech, quality and PCS to win if he skates well. It's just now the competitive atmosphere is very much one mistake can be the difference between being on the podium and being off it. If everyone skates clean I dont doubt Yuzuru would win. If everyone makes mistakes, then whoever makes the least costly/least amount of mistakes will win.

All I can say is that many of the international judges seems to have the hots for shoma, judging from this event, lombardia, and last season's trend of his PCS shooting up ridiculously fast.

Honestly many of us here see it coming(that's why we had the whole argument that Nathan is not Yuzu's only threat), and from the data we can see that his PCS won't go down much but probably will even go up to reach Yuzu level (I mean, they already let him surpass Patrick in Chanada! ) If he goes clean or seems clean like this time a couple more time.

This is why Yuzu is wise in adding that 4lz. His PCS lead will not be a lead this season whether we like it or not (because the judges are obviously taking a very subjective liking to shoma, regardless of his actual transitions and skating skills and performance dynamics and what not)...And he actually NEED that TES boost (and have to be clean )to win against a  clean or close to clean Shoma.

I like Shoma, but I don't understand why judges love him so much....If non-experts can see the difference in skating abilities between say Shoma and Patrick, why can't judges see it?

I see comments like 4F is textbook jump.i also find comments about <...

:slinkaway:

If so few people do 4F, you don't really have much examples to use as a textbook...doesn't mean it's great though...:slinkaway:

Welcome! And feel free to de-lurk, or continue lurking, whichever you prefer. =P

And yea...it does seem like a repeat of history...though Shoma doesn't seem close to beating a WR yet while Yuzu started breaking SP records in 2012...

Oh yeah, and also the judges love him in that respect too, so Shoma gets the GOE boost too because the judge thinks his jumps deserves the > 2 despite all the prerotation that was noted by many ( the fans with good eye and good knowledge can make all the videos they want, but unfortunately they are not the one judging...)

So like I said before in the skating talk chat, I doubt that the judges and tech specialist will start calling shoma out on any of his imperfections in his jump technique this season. So Yuzu will just have to roll with it and up the ante himself.

fans can make all the zoomed in slow-mo videos they want but the rule for calling a < for pre-rotation is still that it's a clear forward entry when revised at full speed. He is not going to get any kind of calls for pre-rotation until he is either clearly forward without slow-motion replay or the tech panel is allowed to revise jumps for pre-rotation in slow motion to better judge if the degree is unacceptable.

His technique, particularly when his tap is using like half his blade not the toe-pick, is bad and should merit a limit on the GOE he can achieve but judges don't revise jump entries for messy technique in HQ, zoomed in slow-motion the way fans with a gripe against Shoma do.

Maybe he should have a -1~ -2 taken into consideration for poor take off/poor landing but it's not every single jump he does. I think this particular 4F in question was pretty good. +2 isn't an outrageous GOE for this particular example, above +2 is a bit generous but... not so much it's a scandal.

Guys I think Patrick said in knc that that was not his costume

I agree, I think he improved a bit on his 4F today but not near skating skills of Patrick. I enjoyed Patrick’s skating today maybe because he wasn’t thinking of that 4S. Usually I would like shoma’s intensity while skating but not today. A bit underwhelming and the program is basically boring.

Oh god yeah. the difference in Shoma's and Patrick's SS should be more that 0.1 ad the difference in TR should be more than 0.04.. But people tend to really go after Shoma's TES and really hyperbolise how terrible his jumps are and, like...today his jumps were pretty good so *shrug*

And yeah both of Shoma's programs this season are a bit...dull. Out of the top 6 he has the dullest programs and probably made the safest choices even with Yuzu 3peating and Patrick going super in his comfort zone with similar choreography to last season just picking songs that might make the audience emo about his impending retirement. Winter might win me over just because I like the music but he really needs to bring some more life to his performance to make it shine. Idk about his FS maybe it will win me over eventually but it's such a bland choice and so many other people are doing the same music...I honestly would've preferred him repeating Loco rather than Turandot.

J7 threw candy at almost everybody. J9 threw GOE at Jason, but didn't give him all 9s PCS. But j9 was stingy with PCS to everybody. Gave 8s for Chiddy and Shoma too. I really wonder if they each judge with different preconceived ceilings for PCS for each skater. J9 seems to take PCS more seriously and but throws GOE at jumps well done/forgives more jump bullet points.

J5 seems strict but kind of fair - didn't buy Shoma's transitions, however. J8 is fucking drunk because they gave Chiddy a 9 for skating skills and gave Shoma a 9.5 for it. In fact J8 gave Chiddy two 8.75s and one 8.5. Where's J8 from? J8 had it in for Chiddy, scored Jason higher than Chiddy and scored Shoma higher on every single part of PCS. That's just not fair, that's personal. I don't like Patrick Chan all that much but that's ridiculous.

J2 was just silly, three 10s, and 8.5 for Jason for skating skills. Really, J2? Really?

Oh I believe it, it looks less like a training shirt than normal. It's still a training shirt type, just not as grey.

I woke up to see Shoma PCS scores going above Chan...well frankly, I'm not surprised with how Shoma's PCS scores have been going, but seeing the protocols and those 10's pop out is a bit shocking. It's so early in the season, who the heck gets 10's? I am okay with Shoma averaging above 9.0's, but above 9.5 is another issue, and his interpretation of Winter is definitely not my cup of tea. I'd rather give Winter to Pchiddy, or even Jason Brown, or even Cha Jun Hwa. And those 8.75's for Pchiddy, what the heck did the Judge drink?
