He only did two quads, though. Well, he popped his 4T into a 2T so that would have been 3...

I find his programs this year great improvements over last season but I'm way more into his SP right now. That is so more Nathan to me.

Maybe his LP is still a work in progress ... the SP tho is great ... I like everything ... the music and the choreo suits him very well, indeed ...

To be honest, I don't have high hopes for Nathan's FP.

Music is great and the first half looks good, but he totally lost energy and barely got through the second half even though he did not jump many quads. I know it is early and he will probably improve his stamina as the season progresses, but he will also be adding quads (I am certain he is going for 6-7). The second half of his FS barely have any choreography and I feel that the first half will also suffer later to conserve energy when more quads are added .

I wish with all my heart that he will prove me wrong. I think he has so much potential and his SP is promising

Wha-

Nathan uses Rite of Spring??

NATHAN USES RITE OF SPRING??

*insert very acute fangirl screaming here*

Oh, okay, only one minute of it.

Mmmh.

Mmmmmh.

OKay, I've mad up my mind. I don't like the music cuts.

I've counted 3 (maybe 4?) different tunes - the first and the last two can fit with one another. Stravinsky? A big noooo no sir. Stravinsky is musically extravagant and his music touches very concrete themes, like the making of the earth, ancient life, Men being one with nature, the infinite power and imprevedibility of nature... by using Stravinsky like that, as a show-off for a very good looking Step Sequence, and then changing it right away, you don't have time to try and interpret those concepts - actually, it's not in your interest to do so because your other music speaks about something else.

So. I don't see a leading theme here. Music is confusing. I lost myself while I was watching it and found myself only looking forward to 'the next jump'.

So, the first thing Nathan has to do with this program, is find a leading theme throughout the program. After he found that, I may appreciate it more. I suggest a music change tho.

I liked the music cut... :slinkaway: Probably one of the few I've liked of all the musical mashups. But I'm not a musician so I'm easy to please.

Mmh don't worry, I would separate this kind of music cut from the ones we are used to... I guess the terrible ones are 1/10, but Nathan's here is 5/10 for me. It's not about the music per se, but the meaning that is taken out of the music. But I don't deny that it's way better than most music cuts!

Hanyu level is still unreachable though.

I've read that Nathan’s FS music is taken from the soundtracks of “Mao’s Last Dancer,” a film based on the autobiography by a Chinese ballet dancer. I guess the Rite of Spring is probably one of the ballet pieces used in this film and Nathan is portraying the ballet dancer.

I found the music beautiful, and I also liked some of the choreography, but the program still has so much empty space and I felt the 4 and a half minutes too long.

The story must be something Nathan can relate to, and he looked comfortable skating to the music. He has also equipped another quad. So there are good materials to make a good program, but adding difficult jumps won’t change the overall impression of the program. Personally, I wonder more about what his team is going to do with the empty space left in the program than his jump layout.

This is super fascinating, thank you for sharing your thoughts! I'm not musically trained so I had no idea what the song was (and still don't really know the background of it) but it seems to be a dearly beloved piece that people are freaking out about because someone is skating to it so...I'm guessing it's the equivalent of a cult hit in the classic music world? lol

I have to say, I really am not liking the ~post modern~ mashup style of taking completely different songs to mix together. Nathan's is the best because it feels like at least they based it off some musical notes/pairings whereas other mixes seemed to only be there because they wanted to include a nice phrase or two of the song but like...nothing else (/cough Eteri). I do kind of wonder why he didn't just stick with Rite of Spring... I'm guessing he wanted to pay homage to his culture (which I support) but I agree that an overall program doesn't seem as cohesive/rich because they are just taking the musical components of the song as tools to build and not its 'soul'.

EDIT: @sweetwater's comment suggest he's referencing the movie and yes, they do dance the Rite of Spring as part of the movie. So actually I forgive him for that, even though the connection/reference is probably lost on everyone (lol I should know this...I studied Mao's Last Dancer - the book - in Year 9 for English)

This is interesting. Very hard to pull off, though. To make a 'performance within a performance', a la Inception.

Yes, surely the coreography problem you mentioned is one of the other things his team should be worrying about.

lol actually, all my high school memories are coming back to me - Li Cunxin (the man who wrote the autobiography) is actually Chinese-Australian now so that's why we studied his book. Anyway such is my immersion in the FS world though that I initially read 'Mao's Last Dancer' as 'Mao's Last Dance' and was like 'that's a strange way to refer to Ritual Fire Dance' and 'how nice and weird that Nathan's paying homage to Mao-chan'

When I first saw the title of the movie in English I thought of Mao Asada too

Oh a 4F from an European man!!

I remembered a comment I wanted to make about this.

Yuzu: Does 3 quads in the second half

Shoma: Does 3 quads in the second half

Nathan: Hold my orange juice...

Watched Nate's FP. I liked it more then last year's one, seems like he's more into it (at the beginning at least), music is fresh *looking at you, Shoma* music cut is wise: slow part in the second half without accents so he can change jumps the way he likes and then there's an uplifting end. How he will skate to it with all the quads we'll see. I'm not having my hopes up, but at least I can enjoy the SP.

When are the ladies starting, today? I probably won't be awake for them but still.

I'll do the results Top 5 tables once I wake up if no one does it first.

Phew, I'm slowly catching up with all the news after a vacation and wow I love Nathan's music choices so much! :smiley-love017:  I have never heard the music he uses for his LP before and it feels like a breath of fresh air.

I agree with what you were discussing above and the second half feels a bit empty choreo-wise but maybe that will change later? The beginning looks very nice though. Oh, and the final spins!

I also hope he'll work on the interpretation too because I would like to see a deeper connection with the music  But overall I have a very good feeling about this program :animated-smileys-hands-fingers-01: (as long as he doesn't go for 7 quads :smiley-scared003:)
