I think there's a difference between finding a statement objectively wrong and not agreeing with it! A sport always moves forward, and GOAT change from generation to generation. Plushenko was the GOAT of the past generation of skaters, imo, and now there is one (if not more than one) skater who can do way better, technically and interpretation wise (although 'greatest' and 'better' are such generic terms that, really, everything is extra-subjective). So, yes, I don't agree with Javi saying that Plushenko is the GOAT. But I understand why he says it and where he comes from.

It's true that I'm young and I didn't follow FS at the time of Plushenko and Yagudin. But I've seen performances of both and happen to find Yuzuru's depth of interpretation way better. Still, every skater has unique qualities, and Yuzuru and Javi and every other current skater is right to look up to past skaters to improve themselves.

I agree with you about GOAT of his generation. I myself never imagined a skater like Yuzuru would come along. It just wasn't within the realm of possibility based on everything I'd already seen. I didn't mean current generation skaters were odd to consider Plushenko GOAT but those of us watching from the outside have a different perspective, including many commentators who feel Yuzuru is the best of all time. I don't expect the world to agree with those of us who have this opinion, merely that watching Plushenko and Yuzuru   back to back (or any other skater and Yuzuru back to back), the difference is incredible.

I'm afraid I've gone and said something far more controversial than people found Javi's perfectly understandable statement to be. Please excuse me for my transgressions and do please resume Niigata discussions!

Javi was so damn cute here. Iconic.

Actually what bothers me slightly is the GOAT talk itself, even regarding Yuzu. Is it really necessary to name someone GOAT? Doesn't it diminish other skaters achievements?

OT but I am lifelong opera fan and it is exactly the same with famous opera singers .

I agree that it's especially hard to talk about GOAT status in a sport that goes through so much change every few years. In a couple of years we might finally have someone land all the quads (Nathan is closest now but I doubt he'd try a 4A anytime soon) and then would they be the GOAT? It's not a title one can attribute with any kind of objectivity and make it so.

But I think everyone can have their own personal GOAT, the one that inspired them, the one that was their example of what a champion in this sport was while they were growing up. Yuzu's is Plushenko. So is Javi's.

If Yuzuru can jump the 4Lz, he can jump the 4F. And all he has to do is not Lip once. Just once.

(I'm so sorry, I'll see myself out now)

Though I am not really a fan of Plusenko either, I find him admirable for applauding Yuzu's achievement. The only time they compete iirc is the at Sochi team event, and I think it's the right decision for Plush to withdraw due to physical condition, I think he knows he cannot win another gold.  Exactly because he had pushed the sport, he can appreciate Yuzu's skating more than other older skater or coaches.

His combined team score could have won him a bronze though in the individuals. Crazy to think!

Plushenko is why I'm a figure skating fan and without him I might not be the Yuzu fan I am today. At this point now I am more attached to Yuzu, but it took a hell of a long time to get there.  I first was randomly channel surfing and saw him doing a 4/3/2 in 2001 and it blew my mind (then I saw Sasha practicing quads along with that beautiful skating, and from then on out those two were my *people*).  Guy was an innovator and he had loads of charisma. And I actually loved his jumps (much more than Yagudin's). They didn't look as good later on, but around his prime... *muah* I also liked that I never really had to worry about whether or not he would deliver. I could just watch him and relax. I respect his legacy and contribution to the sport and for me he is the GOAT when it comes to accomplishments and his longevity and pushing the sport forward in his time.  4 Olympics...I mean c'mon!! Those are facts, everything else is subjective and we're all allowed our opinions.  It's all about what someone is able to accomplish in their generation and if there were better at the time they would have his credentials. Not like he was the only one competing in these events.  *shrugs*  Long story short, this is a sport, a competitive sport, and if there's one thing Plushenko could do it was compete like hell while doing among the hardest stuff at the time. As of now, Yuzu is the best jumper I've ever seen in my life and is a complete skater and I love him for that. In terms of ability he is a GOAT, but I also kind of like looking back on what someone has done when it's all said and done and they've called it a career. A GOAT stamp just feels more complete to me that way. But that's personal preference.

Please, no 4 Lips, Zuzu. We know outside edge is your one true love but keep it for the 4Lz.

But if Nathan can, surely Yuzuru can if he practice. Nothing is gonna stop space kitten Zuzu:hachimaki:

(I mean after Olympic lol)

Just once! That's all it takes.

What I realized after posting is that I took the 4A for granted and am angsting over the Flip here

(I actually wouldn't put it past him that if he gets the 4A, he decides he wants the set.)

I agree with this. It's very tempting to name a GOAT when you see people like Plush and Yuzu achieving what they did, but can we really? What makes someone "The Absolute Greatest"? It may change depending on who you ask, because different people prioritize different things.

Also, FS is a sport, and sport's always evolving. Quads have just now become the norm, but in a few years there might be quints coming. Will that make Plushenko and Yuzu's achievements any less? I don't think so *shrugs*

If it means he spends a few more years after 2018 working on it.... :snonegai:
