They're ALL removing pictures of him. I know Zhenya and Boyang are under additional constraints, since they have to follow TCC rules now, but it's nice to see those who aren't at TCC are also trying to help. I think gossip even made Javi feel like he had to avoid Yuzu -- which is just f*cking cruel! It's none of my business, but I don't think Javi is even gay, and it can't be easy for him to have people gossiping about it while he's trying to tell Spanish boys that figure skating is a manly sport. Wasn't it nice to hear Yuzu come out and say there must be some OTHER Yuzuru Hanyu wandering around out there, since the stories about Zhenya are just the fevered fantasies of people with no life of their own. I applaud Misha so hard my hands hurt. What an excellent dude. Link to comment

While I agree with pretty much everything else you've said, I don't see what being/not being gay has to do with figure skating being/not being a manly sport. That's mixing things up. Also people need to get over gay stereotypes and manly/womanly issues, but that's a different topic again. I'd rather hope Javi tries to teach Spanish boys that figure skating is a sport and there's no such thing as manly/womanly sports (and I think that's pretty much what he's said, too). The stuff around Yuzu has gotten ridiculous, though. I can't believe how much lack of common sense and any trace of shame there is among fans... I don't even understand how those people can call themselves fans. Link to comment

I lived in Spain very briefly as a kid, and I remember the men being very concerned about being thought of as "macho." It's funny, because straight male friends were very touchy-feely, but the moment anyone suspected another boy was actually gay, it all went badly. And you and I might think it's stupid that so many men around the world think of figure skating as being unmanly, but nonetheless, many do think of it as a female or gay sport. Javi is in a very pivotal position. The future of men's skating in Spain rests on his shoulders, and I'm sure these problems of perception are very difficult for him to manage. Link to comment
Xen
re: Misha and other relationships that Yuzu has... Well, I've never understood why it should matter that much, frankly he could go date cacti- so long as he's happy. No, I think the issue is that some fans, possibly newer fans, are mixing his status as a star of figure skating with idol status in pop-culture. Pop/idol culture does tend to sell the idea that somehow this idol/star is married to everyone, with almost next to no privacy, since it's image selling all the time. =/ It's pretty sad, but much as I hate this since Yuzu did ask people not to think of him as an idol, a significant part of the fan population *does* do that. The scarier part is, this subset of fans are into him enough that they will follow him, but not so much into him or his skating that they'll probably find his interviews where he says not to think of him as an idol. A subset that is between a general FS fan and a diehard Yuzu fan- will stalk instagram/twitter/sns, but not really enter forums like PH, follow FS blogs etc to find out more depth. At least, that's my theory, and why it's so hard to keep that portion under control. =/ And it's sad that such a portion does shape people's perception of what Hanyu fans are like. =( Link to comment

I don't care if Yuzu's gay, straight, or secretly a celibate Monk. Whatever makes him happy. And I don't want to hear one word about his love life unless he publicly says he's dating or marrying someone (male OR female.) Personally, I think the vast majority of fans, in EVERY fandom, are like us. It's always the few bad apples that spoil the bunch. But the bad apples in this world are the loudmouths, so it always looks like there are a lot more of them then there are. Link to comment

Javi is in a very pivotal position. The future of men's skating in Spain rests on his shoulders, and I'm sure these problems of perception are very difficult for him to manage. I don't disagree with that, but the way you worded it wasn't ideal. Javi has spoken about FS being seen as a girly sport and has been very clear that there's no such thing. And yes, maintaining his manly image I'm sure does make a difference. Sadly. But your wording rubbed me the wrong way, though I was sure you didn't mean it like that. I'm glad to have that confirmed. As for Yuzu's fans, I'm not sure it's only surface fans who do this. I think there might be others who are really into him but just don't realize how intrusive their behavior is. It can be hard to draw the line sometimes, but a lot of people don't try to put themselves in others' shoes. And that makes all the difference. On top of Yuzu never really aiming for stardom, but athletic success. (Then again, he's also said he likes people watching him, but a lot of people don't get that that's just on ice.) Link to comment
VyVy99
Misha is so understanding and is such a good company I appreciate how he finally speaks up, not only to express his annoyance with immature fans, but more so to protect Yuzu's privacy and confirm their good friendship It shows how unwavering he is Link to comment

yuzuangel
I agree that contacting skaters and asking about Yuzu is a big no no and we shouldn't try to contact or visit him in private in any way, or any other skaters, other than through officially sanctioned methods. But we shouldn't make generalizations or attack different groups of fans, unless they violate the aforementioned above. It's perfectly fine to only follow Yuzu, or to not know much about skating. Most fans are introduced to the sport this way and it's very natural. Lots of fans are young and don't know any better either. Of course we shouldn't tolerate anyone violating skaters' privacy but we should also be open to all types of Yuzu fans it is a site for Yuzu fans after all. Link to comment
micaelis
I think as far as the gay issue goes in relationship to figure-skating, you should realize that the same dynamics in public perception also occur with men's gymnastics, men's diving, as also male dance and ballet, that is to those activities where the man is expected to do something 'beautiful'. It's the trying to look beautiful that makes so many think of these activities as gay, since so many equate the qualities that make things beautiful and those that make things feminine as essentially the same. Interestingly the bias does not seem to operate with men doing things in the other arts, such as writing, acting and music, only just in certain sports and dance. Yuzu, as we all well know, achieves routinely the supreme heights of beauty that figure-skating can reach, thus his scores and medals, but to me his magic is that on the ice he is neither masculine nor feminine - he is just simply Human. He shows us what human beings can achieve when they have the talent, the drive and the technique and apply all of them to creating a work of art. I am sure that Yuzu is aware of speculation about his sexual orientation, as also Javi might realize there is speculation about him, thus I think it extremely courageous on the part of both of them that they were so unabashedly emotional at the end of the FS competition, when Yuzu realized he had the gold and Javi that at last he had an Olympic medal of any color. Their embraces were those of two friends who had escorted each other through the four years of training and competition between Sochi and PC, both realizing through those years that the competition between them was athletic and not personal. In any case I think it fortunate for Yuzu that he is at TCC since Brian and his people are well able to handle the attempts to intrude on Yuzu's private life. Zhenya and Boyang are now also able to avail themselves of TCC's skill at controlling access to its athletes. It is probably the knowledge of how TCC manages access to its trainees that contributed to the Russian and Chinese authorities' willingness to let these two star athletes train outside their native lands. They see that Zhenya and Boyang are in capable hands. Link to comment
