So putting aside the translation issues, a part of me is super sad that his books are not available in other languages.

I have Blue Flames II and can't wait to get my paws on the new one...which sadly I bought but have probably no chance of ever understanding.

There has to be some publisher that would consider translating it right? Or if fans crowd translate it, would they consider publishing it and donating the proceeds to say, any charity or cause that Yuzu chooses?

It's not an issue of translation but more one of perception.

And I think someone on tumblr has it translated already so you could probably ask it from them?

Nope. She didn't miss out anything major. Hanyu said more or less exactly that. But based on the way Hanyu chooses his words in all the interviews I've ever seen of him, he has never been political in his views, this much I'm certain of. Figure skating programs are based on culture, which in itself is intertwined with race. This is the part where I agree with . But that's where it stops. Race and culture branch off at some point and figure skating programs cover a part of culture that doesnt necessarily touch upon the race issue in a solid way. I feel by choosing to see this as a racial issue over a cultural one, we are politicizing what he said, which, based on what I gather of who he is, isn't what he wants or meant to do. But if that's what you all want to do, I really can't stop you. Just know that you'd be doing it in his name. And I'd rather not be a part of it more than I already am so I'll be signing off on this issue now.

Nobody is actually doing anything of the sort. Pointing out that he said something about something that possibly has its roots in racial biases is not like saying he said the sport is racist. But he has kept his own views about many things to himself, and he has guarded many parts of his privacy very fiercely, so we cannot in fact say he has not been political in his views. Maybe he is. Maybe he's not. Saying he is not, definitively, is as bad as saying he is, definitively.

He is the Olympic champion who used a rather tangentially connected question (he wasn't actually asked about Seimei) to give his views about why he used that particular piece of music as, in part, a vehicle to show that certain perceptions regarding Asian figure skaters are not true.

That much is definitely a fact. Apart from that, let's not declare what he meant, or what he definitely did not mean, either.

.....are you guys serious.... Good god

Lol. Why? I think the act of debating itself is a pretty healthy one. I don't think anything untoward is happening here at all. But I do understand that some may be uncomfortable about it. And since I said I'll be signing of on the issue here, I'll keep my word. Any responses I may feel compelled to make about this topic I will do so privately from here on out. So...we can all get back to the regularly scheduled program. Sorry for the interruption.

It is not the debate that is making me uncomfortable, let me just say only that and stop at that :)

And also to show that yes, maybe you can indeed not always use European-warhorse or western music for your programs, but instead go with something more cultural and unknown, and not be undermarked.

There's someone who will provide English translations of Aoi Honoo I if you show proof of purchase and the second one has been sort of semi-translated by yuzusorbet on Tumblr. I think the first solution is best but the thought of having to translate an entire novel is not one I can do, sadly, but props to the Herculean effort if any fan manages to attempt it ;;

A very important message for our collective sanity, please, please may skaters and their teams be listening.

I think it's as important to get the right choreographer and music cuts too for a cultural program to stand out, as well as having the right skater to carry it. It undermines a program more than anything.

I can listen to Seimei without seeing the program, as well as after first viewing I notice so much more special moments upon successive viewings of Seimei, and Yuzu brings the right feel and grace to the program.

Shaelyn and Yuzu collab for Seimei was a dream come true. I'm not sure if I want another choreographer for Yuzu besides her and Jeff next season, though it might help him to grow. At this point in his career I don't think he'll change choreographers though.

Honestly, I think there's more power to him in publicly acknowledging him. Especially if the people doing it might actually be reluctant to do it to his face - ie knowing he knows about it. It's like he's saying: "I know who you are and I know what you are writing about me." Ignoring them would work, too, but it would make people feel free to criticize him even more. It's kind of like the internet. Internet trolls exist because of the anonymity of the internet and most would never dare say the things they type, especially not to people's faces. Reporters, of course, are not anonymous, but it's one thing to write knowing the person you write about KNOWS what you write and it's another to write not knowing that. Maybe they do, maybe they don't, he's not in Japan so maybe he doesn't, or he doesn't really speak English, so maybe he doesn't. But him saying he knows is putting people who write stuff like that on the spot. Especially if he's not naming names. IMO, that's a very powerful stance to take. Although, yes, I'm sure it does affect him, but he's being awesome about it

Thank you! That makes me feel better.

Ok... where have you guys seen pre-orders for the third auto-biography? I didn't see anything on amazon.co.jp the other night and hadn't heard anything about it until now (although I expected another book, and hopefully DVD/Bluray).

This is the book I think

It's out today Japan time (since it's already March 1st there). So I expect we'll be getting bits of info from it very soon. I have it pre-ordered through a proxy, but it won't reach them until Monday and then it'll take some 10 or so days to arrive here.
