  1. Yuzu can invent new jumps and spins, win every single possible medal, and break WRs a dozen more times and he will not be GOAT simply because there will always be a new thing he must do for it. I personally hate this debate, titles and labels people like to use and would rather he be just Yuzuru Hanyu tha amazing skater that he is . Yuzu doesn't need to prove anything or to live to any expectations anymore. He did what he wanted to do and more than was expected of him and he achieved a lot in his young life. What he did should be respected and admired without having "but" every time he is mentioned. Yuzuru has done enough and no one has the right to tell him give more.
  2. I failed before even playing the video because of the Yuzu emoji
  3. I have a friend who wants to know as well
  4. Which competition are we judging? was this decided and I missed it ?
  5. So, apparently this judging thing is going to be extremely difficult for me. I thought I would practice a bit and decided to choose programs I am familiar with because I would know the layout, and here is how it went: First started with Yuzu, picked the first performance Youtube suggested for me (it was POTO at GPF)- enjoyed the performance so much that I totally forgot I was supposed to be judging Second, I picked Mai's FP from COC (it was in the recommended videos)- ended up in tears remembering nationals Noticing the problem, I picked someone I don't like (not naming them for obvious reasons) - Was bored out of my mind and remembered why I did not like that skater. So, -3 GOE for both the skater and me as a judge Thus, it is painfully obvious that I totally fail as a judge as I am too biased and enjoy skating way too much to scrutinize it I am actually curious now about what performances were guys trying? and how do you handle the problem of having an opinion about the skater or program before hand?
  6. I believe we are both thinking the same thing but coming at it from different directions. I was just trying to say that it is a useful exercise as long as we remember not to judge the judges or base any conclusion on this. Sorry if I caused confusion, I sometimes have problem expressing myself clearly in English.
  7. Checking points is useful for us here because we want this to be a discussion and a learning experience but for the judges doing it on the spot it really is not possible or realistic. The GOE are subjective by nature and that is not a bad thing per say but it can be misused easily. The only way to solve this problem is to give the judges time to rewatch everything they want and to have a second judge review the scores (which is what we do with students marks). The ISU is trying to that by having 9 judges who are scoring the same thing and taking the mean but the fact remains that the judges have to make quick decisions without consulting the rules every time, so they rely on their own interpretation of the bullet points. I will check the app when I have time and I think it would also be useful to us to discuss how we interpret the bullet points and weigh them against each other some time in the future
  8. Checking points is not the correct way to use GOE I know many people think that it is better to count points and give GOE accordingly but these are guidelines for a reason. The judges should have the freedom to round up or down if the element checks an odd number of bullets depending on quality. They should also be able to reward innovation and spectacular elements that would not be rewarded with just checking points. FS elements have so many small details going into their execution and skaters are always trying to distinguish themselves so it is very important that the judges can and do give the appropriate reward even if it is not stipulated in the rules. The fact that the judges sometimes abuse the system does not mean we destroy a good part of it that should (theoretically) be to the skaters and the sport's benefit. This is a typical thing in any scoring rubric that aims to evaluate something subjective (we use it with student generated content such as essays and videos all the time)
  9. Not having Chopin in the poll is unimportant since it does not need any validation, everyone knows it is the best without polls or voting. What really annoys me is that there is no Boyang, really? He had an amazing short program and also scored really high, why is he always ignored
  10. Let our first try be the SP of any competition as it would be easier with less elements and time. After that we can see how it worked and discuss any problems before moving into FP or both segments.
  11. I want to try this but as a side judge since I don't have much experience. I find the idea interesting and I always liked the scoring system so I want to have fun with it. Maybe I will join the panel for later competitions if we continue and I gain more confidence
  12. I think that the people working on this know their audience and none of their decisions is arbitrary. They are not throwing money away without any planning so there is no need to worry. Even if there is a loss, it is most likely calculated and expected. You usually take risks when starting something new (like an ice show), it is just normal business
  13. Wow, catching up with the thread was very interesting The planet is really never boring
  14. I also hope it works I usually don't buy any event merchandise if I am not there myself since I consider them as memories but I really like the stuff for the show and and want buy some.
  15. I think it is more believable if he returned because the ISU has finally assigned a BV for quints and he wants to land it in competitions with positive GOE It is after all a movie based on true story
  16. I was trying to think of how Hollywood can exaggerate Yuzu's already over the top story and the only scenario I can imagine is making him a real alien who crashed to earth and can't leave. The ending scene would be him finally flying to his home planet while credits roll I think the lack of sleep is affecting me
  17. Please let all these Boyang dance videos be a practice for a really fun program next year
  18. I am not worried about this. As a perfectionist myself, I know it is something that as you mature becomes less of an issue (unless it is an obsession ). As you grow and experience different situations you learn to compromise and let go. As a perfectionist you still strive to be the best you can but you learn to accept it if it is not perfect. Being perfect is much easier when you are young and life is generally simple but the task gets harder and harder as you grow so you learn to make choices. Yuzu seems to be learning that lesson now, you see it when he keeps comparing his current self with his younger self, and how back then he was very strict and demanding of himself.I think that as he grows and matures he will be able to fully appreciate what he has accomplished and enjoy it. He is a smart person and he has accumulated enough experience to know his limits and except them, so don't worry about him he will be fine
  19. I wonder about that.. The thing is, it is very possible that he thinks it is doable. Nathan is an overachiever, he managed to be a top skater so quickly and won many medals while also being a top student. So it is very possible that he thinks he can continue doing the same with college because he lacks the experience to look ahead and plan. As I said before, I have seen this often with smart students who are used to success. They come to University expecting the same results as school and are usually unprepared to how different the whole experience is. Those students would usually burn themselves out because they take on too much thinking that they are capable of handling it since they have never failed before. It is a very sad thing when it happens and while most of them recover, some end up really badly. I still believe that he can do it but not on his own. He really needs the support of everyone around him to manage things or it may have a very adverse effects on his health and mental state (which is really more important than his studies or skating career). This is a very serious issue that I hope his family at least is considering and are prepared for. I really don't want this to sound like I don't think he is strong or I don't believe in his abilities and commitment (been accused of that by some of his fans) but I have seen very painful things happen to students in somewhat similar situation (one if them is very close to me) so I can't help but worry. I really hope he makes the correct choices for his own good
  20. No, you should not You can buy few magazines with new pictures to hang on the wall with that money
  21. I am a lecturer and have taught and did research with undergraduate students for the past seven years. I have met many young students who think they can do anything and overload themselves only to burn out. It is quite sad since it is the most promising and ambitious ones who are usually the victims of this. For Nathan, I think it is doable but he is going to need a lot of help. He will need the University to give him special consideration and scheduling. His coach and team need to figure out how to fit skating into his new life without over burdening him, and most importantly he will need the support of his family to be able to mentally cope with the load. Nathan is clearly smart but may be a bit over confident which is understandable considering his age and what he achieved so far. It is essential for the more experienced adults in his life to help him manage expectations of himself. The last thing he needs is cheer leaders (like his coach was during the season) pushing him to commit to things beyond his abilities. I do wish him the best of luck, he is truly is an exceptional young man and he deserves the best
  22. I agree, he seems to be very optimistic about arranging things as he wants them to be, which may not be realistic. There are so many things that they will need to work out and I am not sure how he will manage it without burning out or hurting himself. I guess this year is the perfect time to try it and test his limits, but it would be prudent to have other plans in place in case this did not work I laughed at the "happy scheduling coincidences between the 2018-19 Yale academic calendar and the competitive schedule next season" because that is only few days commitment that would not really hurt his schedule. Training to stay in form and keep his quads is another issue entirely that would have huge effect on his studies.
