I do think there's an expectation that at least one of the programs will be Japanese (even if he has Haru yo koi as his exhibition piece), he's sort of built that idea up for himself But he doesn't have to. That's the beauty of it, Yuzuru can do such an amazing range of styles, music, programs... more than pretty much anyone else I can think of, he can probably take something you'd never think of and make it work. And he has nothing to prove anymore. This is going to be fun. (Unless he decides - having nothing more to prove - that he is going to go back and repeat every single program in his life until he gets them all perfect... and we could be here for a while, folks)

Re number 4, that gave me the biggest laugh - "he's here! he's healthy! he's wonderful! he's a prince! he's a champion! .... and he's gone and stuffed up getting dressed by himself again!!!!"

Maybe he will, maybe he won't... of the three young pretenders to Yuzu's crown (Nathan, Boyang, Shoma), at least two will never get the Olympic Gold* no matter what good or bad choices they make, and quite possibly all three will miss out, for any number of reasons over the next three and a half years. And if and when they don't, there will be plenty of people to go "told you so!!" for all of them. It's way to early to start, though... (*unless at least someone's knees and hips hold out for 2026, care to take bets? I wouldn't)

Oh it was totally badass - that small, slender almost delicate, utterly composed figure surrounded by all those intense, menacing guards and fussing officials and still completely the focus of every eye in the place (and everywhere else looking on...)

Hey, never mind the actual skating thread... I went back and read the pages and pages and pages and pages waiting for then celebrating Yuzuru arriving at the airport... Given that and the Japanese media, that's why, when that latest picture (the paparazzi one, sorry) popped up this week I immediately assumed the story was "Headline: Yuzuru walks through a door!"

Given all the publicity and fuss, Boyang sure has got nerve if he is the one who put up a hand and said no. Just as Yuzu - albeit even younger - had as much for deciding to up and go. It's their lives, their careers, their shot at sporting fame or footnote. Hardly any of their fans can even imagine what it's like to be at that level and know that it's a crapshoot really... I'm disappointed, he's my favourite of the S-quad and I was looking forward to it, but he apparently wasn't, and most of all I want him to be happy and fulfilled, that matters a lot more than what we think.

Losing? Consider mine lost... I was looking through some downloaded vids and came across a Yuzu one set to... Ooooooh... White Legend was a bit untidy but I still like it quite a lot, I love R&J 1 and Etude is probably his most beautiful costume of all time....

Actually, I must sheepishly admit that one of my "only in my dreams, but oh my dreams!!" choices was about as unAsian as they come... Ralph Vaughan Williams, quintessially English but the spiritual power and pure beauty would suit Yuzu down to the ground. In fact, I tend to wonder why more skaters don't go for him (maybe 'cause of the Englishness?) - and there is more to RVW than Lark Ascending, skaters!!! My top pick would in fact be the 3rd movement (romance) from his 5th symphony which IMO may just be the most beautiful, catch-in-the-throat piece of music ever, but has the sweep and emotion for a skating cut to be exquisite...

My first preseason too! An goodness knows, I've come up with more "Oh he really really should do this music!!!" moments than the poor man has time and energy for for the next century or so... It boggles the mind, though, that with the whole wide world of music available, skaters keep going back to the same narrow range. I'm hoping that Yuzu - having shown with Seimei and Hope&Legacy that he can push the boundaries - will give us something out of left field (and at least one more Japanese. Please Yuzu, and Japanese.)

This is true... even if the programs themselves were announced tomorrow, we would then still keep spending up till the first competition speculating and fretting about what he might wear for that music...

Which is why I spent quite a bit of time going through my music collection for anything swan-related and sending lots of "Yuzu Yuzu this this this!" thoughts to him....
