Proposed changes for next season

Recommended Posts

Chaotic evil thoughts... while we reduce the men's FS time by 30 seconds, how about NOT reducing the jumping pass. I would love to see those 1 sec ChSq.. :devil3:

Trolling aside, I agree with the proposal of separating judging of GOEs and PCS. I, however, do not agree with removing the required steps before the solo jump. Also, the reasoning for the removal of the rule is stupid. The only reason it's "controversial" is because judges seem to know the rule when it's a skater from a small fed then conveniently forget about the rule when it's the final flight of skaters....

Out of curiosity, if they separate the judges into PC and GOE panels how can we stop the PC panel from falling asleep or getting distracted?

This is a serious question and I was thinking about it because I tried that mock judging exercise (here in on the planet) and found it so boring. I tried to watch the performance first to give GOE and that worked fine because you are only looking at one element at a time, but when I watched the performance to try and judge PC, I found my mind wondering and I got really bored. That happened when I was only judging one group, so how would the judges do it when judging at Worlds or other big competitions with too many skaters. Wouldn't that make reputation scoring worse because a bored (or distracted) judge who was not paying attention would just give the scores expected for the skaters?

I know the judges are professionals and that this should not happen with them, but is it true? Does being trained really help in this case? is it enough to overcome the human nature and our short attention span?

But PCS also include technical elements so maybe those judges could focus on things like edges, change of direction and so on plus how well upper body works and if all of this fits the music etc.. things like steps and turns can be the technical and "concrete" elements to analyse one after the other to keep judges focused, and at the same time they don't need to compute the scores for each one of them right then, right there separately so they can also look at the global picture...

I haven't tried the mock judging myself but just yesterday I was watching skaters I had never seen before and I focused on their feet and while some programs did feel boring to me, my mind was still quite busy assessing the footwork and speed and carriage (LOL I wasn't naming steps and turns live, I'm not that good yet, at all, but I was comparing with how skaters I know move). I think there is enough to evalue in the quality and quantity of movements, so judges would be able to stay focused, imo, but without feeling overwhelmed with their tasks as they are now, when they have to assess so many different things at once...maybe:biggrin:

Yeah really targetted. Russia on the ladies side gets hit pretty hard (Sasha and Alena won't make it), and Canada on the men's side gets hit (Gogolev won't turn until 22/23). Well if this passes, from an age/stats perspective, we might not get another 2-Repeat-OGM on the men's side easily, since it usually takes about 2-3 seasons before a male skater does well in seniors, and then he has to maintain that past age 24/25 for a second OGM. With all the quads coming, I don't think that's going to be easy.

Once again a big proposal coming from a country that barely has any skaters good enough to qualify for Euros... and often not even that.

I feel very conflicted. If they feel big enough to propose these things, maybe they should start taking away 10% of the focus and money going to speed skating and use it for figure skating development.

Nothing against Mr. Prins, mind, he’s always come across as nice and very knowledgeable. (This is the ISU judge/ tech controller and he also does Eurosport commentaries.)

The more I look at these proposals, the more I fear the following combination:

-Only 4 jumping passes in the second half get bonus

-Quads cannot be repeated

-falls being evaluated in PCS rather than outright -1 deduction

-And none of the variety of jumps bonus being proposed getting passed

This...well, I feel bad for the guys who have less than 3 quad types. The TES scores and limitations to min/max would be pretty severe, and the difference in scores between TES of the guys with only 1-2 quad varieties and 3-4 quad types would just be scary. Also, since when has anyone seen a triple (other than a 3A) get perfect GOEs? Then there's the factorization for triple jumps so final GOE is actually lower for triples? I'm not sure how this is suppose to help balance PCS and TES, when in reality quad BV due to variety is the only way to min/max points. The only way might be to do all your jump combos in the second half if you don't have a 4F/4Lz solo jump or combo, since that's the only way to maximize your points.
