I guess I am trying to find an explanation because I really don't understand his PC

I think his beautiful arm mouvements mesmerize the judges and they forget to watch his feet (at least it's totally what happens on french eurosport, which astonishes me because Alban is quite good usually). Also, he couldn't be behind Samarin, or could he ? Since they overscored Samarin, they had to overscore Shoma... at least that's how I see it.

On the french eurosport they explained that, since he didn't put his fut on the ice between the two jumps, the combo was valid.

In the case of Yuzu, the tech panel thought that he had put a knee on the ice (while he hadn't, but well...), so they called the combo invalid.

You mean Aaron did not put his non-landing foot down?

I am still super confused about it, tho. That was clearly not a jump combo for me.

I feel like the more I try to understand the intricacy of figure skating, the more in awe I am of the athletes, but the less appreciative I am about the sport and how the competitive events of it are handled.

It is always interesting to look at the names and nationality of the judges...http://www.isuresults.com/results/season1718/gpfra2017/SEG001OF.HTM

Javi had a very good performance but Mr. Delfa (J1, Spain) gave him two 9.75 and three 10.00 with and average of 9.9. Obviously he gave among the lowest scores to Shoma ;).

Such as for the ladies, Japan judge (J4) seemed be more objective for the skater of her country, while the Russian (J8) one tried to prop a little up Samarin.

In general PCS of the first men are really a little bit too high and probably mostly because of reputation  and/or because of the comparison with the other performances of the night.

Also with errors and fall Shoma seems to be stable in the range of the 9s-9.20s...and I don't say anything more.

That said: kudos to Javi for a great performance World champion worthy (also if I don't like those kind of programs) and congratulations to Shoma and Samarin for the fight. I hope that all the men could have a good rest for a great performance tomorrow.

Yes that's what they said, and I think they're right ?

Anyway, I was like you, I thought the combo would be invalid.

I haven't seen Aaron SP so I don't know if I've got this right, but if he only turned on his landing foot without ever putting the left foot down, or if he put it down but he still had >50% of his body weight on his right foot(no weight transfer), then the combo is valid (I think it's allowed up to 2 three turns between first and second jump? or 3? Can't remember)

In Yuzu's case, the panel thought he had indeed put >50% of his body weight on his left foot, hence invalid combo. Now, most of the commies said live they thought there was weight transfer so the call was legit, but some people (e.g. ITA esp) said that rewatching in slow motion they couldn't really be sure it was really the case, so maybe the call could have been in favour of the skater instead (as it's stated in the rules that when you have doubt the call is in the skater's favour. Which is why I think some "falls" haven't been called in SC and CoC, though imo the weight transfer did happen. To call a fall the skater has to have >50% of his weight on any body part different from the skates).

tbh the weight transfer rule is so muddled it should be somehow rewritten.

ETA: I don't think edge is mentioned, only the "foot"

Aaron's non-landing foot indeed did not touch the ice. I always thought combos could only be valid while you do not change edge from landing the 1st one to taking off the 2nd one. That's why only certain jumps combination can be done without being a bi-rotational jumper. I guess Aaron managed to not change edge when doing the 3-turn then.

I do not recall the allowance for 3turns in between jumps for the combination in SP. Perhaps it just went pass by me. I remember the 2007 changing of allowing just one 3turn in between jumps in a combination of the whole FS. Again, perhaps it's just me that need to refresh my knowledge of rules regarding jumps.

The called Uno's 4F, Samarin's 4Lz, and Zhou's 4Lz and 4F.

There's yet hope for tech panel

I mean, personally would've given Shoma 4Lz<< but don't mind me.

in the 2017-2018 handbook it says

Quote

Touch down with the free foot without weight transfer

In case of a touch down with the free foot without weight transfer and up to 2 three turns or no turns between the jumps in a combination, the element remains a jump combination (however Judges will reduce the GOE because of error).

In case of more than 1 full revolution on the ice the call will be the jumps performed prior to this revolution + all the next jumps with an * combo in Short Program and sequence in Free Skating.

Ah, you are counting the prerotation as well? Haven't you learn anything? I mean, I know.:sigh:

Well, there you go. Skaters' other foot can also touch the ice, as long as there's no weight transfer, apparently. And this is new. My bad for not updating my knowledge. :sigh:

:thanks:, tho...

You too, @Altie

ETA: I cannot believe this is how I reach Parisienne Walkways.

Go Javi! I haven't watched any of the others, but I'm so glad he did well today. I'm not a huge fan of this program (it's a little cheesy), but I think he really needed this to see that he's really, really, still a world-class skater.

Ok serious question, does anyone of our precious members know where to get Universal commentary? Thank you very much.
