I think it is saying that 4 Lz is key for him, whether he gets into gpf, like a 4lz is his ticket to gpf

Is that what the article says? Cos the competition isn't exactly stiff this time so it'd be kinda odd for them to say that...

And oops, on closer look at the second headline, those are NHK Trophy predictions by whoever wrote the article (or nikkansports), and not one from nhk themselves.

I think we all know how dramatic j media is lol, build up the drama so when he wins it will be all the more impressive to the general viewers

Oh. Then I guess maybe it's not so odd. But it's hella eye-roll inducing. And funny cos the TV stations--the ones I've seen anyway--don't seem to be hyping it up from that angle. The 10-min one with the older gentleman giving a rundown of the comp is only talking about NHK being a competition that Hanyu, even though he'd no doubt he'd be giving it all he's got, would essentially be using as a testing ground or stepping stone of sorts in his quest to clear his latest challenge, given his caliber. They also made it rather clear that the bigger rivals are all not present (he surmised that with Jin, (Chan) and Fernandez seeming quite far from top form would likely ultimately leave only Uno and Chen the only ones really breathing down Hanyu's neck, but both won't be present at the NHK).

The one with Takeshi Honda said that if he lands the 4Lz, it's only a matter of how well he performs the rest of his elements that determines whether or not a new record is set.

All logical, unoverhyped and reasonable deductions but no less exciting or fascinating.

No it's not hyping, it's just an enticing headline, but it's true that 4lz impt this season, n after what had happened to javi, we can't take anything for granted, yuzu needs to do a good performance in order to go to the final, which I think was what the article is suggesting

Good point, I'm warming up to it. A bit. Still think it's too darn dark. Olympic season is gonna be stressful enough, we don't need no gloomy and shadowy high tech K&C areas!

But it's so pretty :3 sparkles!!

He didn't have the best of seasons and then apparently there was a difference of opinions on how to continue onward; IIRC, it was because of how he wanted to be paced throughout the season. Then he was with Briand for a while, then switched to Dungien, then soon after that, maybe a year, switched to Raf. Before Orser, Adam was with Morozov but that didn't last long either, maybe a year or so. To me it seems like it took a while to find the right coach.

What I do remember is that since Rippon left after Yuna left, some were predicting the slow, painful death of TCC/Orser and how they were done for now that the best skaters were gone. Looking back, it's hilarious in the extreme.

Adam certainly did run through the coaches, didn't he?  He lost so much valuable training time by jumping from one to another.

Here are a couple of links some of you might find interesting:

Video of Adam with a much younger Brian; note how Brian acts in the K&C then versus now (and also note Adam's adorable curls):

And here's an article by Phil Hersh about the reasons for their split:

The comments for that Phil Hersch article are just precious - so gleeful Brian had messed it up so badly, in their opinion.

I find it satisfying that Brian proved them wrong. :war:

Interesting indeed...I can kind of see the personality mismatch just from the K&C clip. Adam (young or perhaps now, I haven’t followed his skating v closely) clearly seems like an emotional and self critical skater who needs someone with a warmer, more personal touch to just provide emotional comfort whereas Brian is quite logical and collected/‘big picture’ who wants to dissect things afterwards. Definitely works for Yuzu and Javi who are both the types to clam up and withdraw into themselves after a bad performance  (albeit Javi tends to hide it behind a smile/resignation and Yuzu just looks sad) so Brian works to refocus them and find reasonable positives or things to work on

...I kind of picture Adam working well with Tracy actually

(I feel so vindicated on Brian’s behalf re: comments on the Hersh article)

Ghislain looks like he gives fantastic hugs though lol

Whow, Adam Rippon was an epitome of a "pretty boy" when he was younger. (Not that he's chopped liver in the looks depatrment now, heh. )

Reading that Herdh article makes me wonder about those different ideas for training. Obviously Brian's strategies were quite effective for Javi and Yuzu. Would they have been effective for Adam if he stuck with Brian?

Hard to tell that one, or even guess. Some coaches and athletes never work out, no matter the good intentions, and attempts by both parties. We don't know enough what exactly happened there, but maybe they just didn't fit and it wasn't an issue of how long they stuck together. What ifs are always difficult.
