Whow, Adam Rippon was an epitome of a "pretty boy" when he was younger. (Not that he's chopped liver in the looks depatrment now, heh. )

Reading that Herdh article makes me wonder about those different ideas for training. Obviously Brian's strategies were quite effective for Javi and Yuzu. Would they have been effective for Adam if he stuck with Brian?

He was pretty angelic as a youngster. My husband only remembers some skaters and one of them is Adam, who he nicknamed "Curly" even though the curls are long gone. He calls Jason "Ponytail."

I've seen gossip that Adam used to be negligent in his off-ice training. But who knows. Water under the bridge. Yuna leaving was a huge blow to Brian emotionally, and it had to have affected Adam.

I don't think Brian is the miracle coach for everyone like people sometimes attribute him to be. I guess having coached both Yuna and Yuzu to OGMs and numerous records can do that. Yuna, Javi, and Yuzu all had immense talent and already beautiful technique and jumps and decent SS before they went to Brian, but skaters that have gone to him at a younger age like Cha and Elizabet are a test to see how well he can develop a skater from scratch...although they are good already, they are not on the same level yet as Olympic and World champions.

Likely Adam, who has immense talent but isn't on the same level IMO (respectfully) as Yuna/Yuzu/Javi, just didn't find it the environment that worked for him. Brian can really polish and improve the whole package for a skater, but he can't create ability where there might not be any.

You also have to take into account that the competitive life of an athlete is short - how many seasons should you give it if the coaching relationship doesn't seem to be working?

Not NHK related but we are discussing about other things right now

So talking about Brian-Yuna split, I found:

Quote

"The traumatic experience of the breakup with Kim has clearly had a lingering effect on Orser, who said he now has to protect himself when it comes to the skaters he coaches."

“And the same thing happened with Adam (Rippon), and it was hard for me to trust anybody in this sport. I couldn’t get emotionally involved."

“I love the skaters that I’m working with now, but I can’t let myself get emotionally involved. I can’t. I learned a lot, just take it one season at a time."

"I don’t have contracts with my skaters, just a handshake, and maybe I need to revisit that idea, but I just don’t feel it’s necessary.”

Wow. I didn't know about their past but seeing Brian-Yuzu-Javi relationship now is :tumblr_inline_ncmif7esGm1rpglid:

Also all of the other skaters at TCC too

Thanks for the insight on Adam/Brian. The thing is, I'm quite a fan of Adam who's one of the most charismatic performers, and seeing as he was a junior champion twice makes me wonder if he could have achieved more than he did, if he could have reached the level of Yuna/Yuzu/Javi. I mean nothing by it, just pure wondering of a fan.

Just wondering, does anyone remember comments on Yuzu's first year with Brian? Was there a feeling that he's made progress? I remember it was a rocky year for Yuzu but I joined skating fandom later, so I don't know what was being said.

I sometimes think it's easier to be a junior champion - you are a child/ teenager and used to doing as you're told by your coach/trainer.  When you go into the senior competitions you're becoming an adult, wanting to be your own person and probably less amenable to external discipline- how many 18/20 year olds can self discipline?

The whole Yuna-Brian split is to be perfectly honest, best left alone. Not because it's taboo, we can of course talk about it, but because it was very difficult and we don't know what actually happened. There were quite a few things thrown around at the time and just well, mess. They seem in a better place now, so I'm happy for them because for a time there, they created magic.

It's perfectly normal to wonder what if, especially if it's someone you care about (I sometimes wonder about Jason, and what might have been had he gone somewhere else). Funnily enough, we'll have both of them going against each other now

Yuzu's photo at the end of this video looks like a mugshot. Yuzu, the Criminal!

Also, it's been 84 years since we saw Satoko last compete. Welcome back!

And, imo, it's really a touch and go who will end up higher too, they're very close wh en it comes to scoring potential and both can bd messy.

I have also given a *hmmm....* to what would have happened if Adam had stayed with Brian. Or even if Yuna had stayed with Brian. I am exceedingly pleased that things turned out as they did for Yuzu/javi and the team. I wonder if Brian ever thinks about the machinations of fate in this particular situation as well... he must think of it, or at least did once upon a time... and I think he has become more emotionally attached to these 2 skaters... despite saying he would not!!

Who will they be replacing, though!?

Edit: Speculation is that they might be replacing Isabella TOBIAS / Ilia TKACHENKO?

One of the things I was happy to see live at CoR - Brian and Nam heartily hi-fiving each other after the first training session. It was so nice seeing no animosity between the two of them!
