This article says that the ISU abolished the Host country automatic qualification rule after the Sochi Olympics.

Which means, for example, if Korea does not finish in the top 6 at Nebelhorn, they will not have a spot at the Mens event at the Olys.

I didn't know this was the case?

Went and read the actual ISU communications (no. 2093) to confirm what the article said, and as suspected it's not exactly correct (people, please properly research your articles! Can't believe this appeared on Yahoo...)

What I gather from this is, yes Korea is entitled to a Host country spot if they fail to qualify for a discipline through the normal qualification process (i.e., Worlds and Nebelhorn).

However, they can only be given the spot if there are any remaining slots from the Additional Athletes Quota (This refers to the one additional slot each team in the Team Event is allowed in order to have a complete team in case they only have qualified skaters for 3 of the 4 disciplines. There are 10 Additional Athletes Quota spots to be allocated.).

 

I guess it's a bit confusing, but in short yes Korea is still entitled to that Host country spot.

I think that is really weird. I guess it has to do with $$ and logistics, but the team event and the individual event should be separate, and IMO the host country should always get a spot because, well, they're hosting it. It just seems weird that skaters who need to be brought in for the team event ONLY and won't skate in individual events will affect whether SK gets skaters in their individual events. If there was any risk that they wouldn't get a spot, SK should really have sent CJH to Nebelhorn (given he's healthy), but KSU is quite a stickler to somewhat archaic rules  

 

P.S. Did they manage to qualify a dance team?

SK only has spots for ladies. They need to qualify for spots in all other categories at Nebelhorn.

I see. Got confused because the blog post says they needed 3 spots so I thought men's + 1 pair OR 1 dance team? Or would 1 men + 1 pair + 1 dance = 3? But for the team event pairs count as 2  yikes.

are they streaming any of the practices as well?

I think June-Hyeong could sneak into the top 6 if he gives a good skate. He's worth watching anyway he has 2 GREAT programs this season. I really hope he manages to score a place for Korea.
