i am not too happy about it to be honest because while the ladies have enough of a gap to rest at least somewhat, the men are truly in a bind. throwing the sp to the third man ... i don't see it. i think we'll have yuzu/shoma which may turn out blah for either one or both of them, depending if they advance.

 

and same issue with the ladies. either one or both of them will get an additional burden. 

 

all of this could be fixed by a simple swap of individual ->> team event but as it is i actually really dislike it and wish it didn't exist. which  is a shame because as a concept it is fun and a good thing. of course, all countries will be affected but especially those with competitive men - japan, usa, russia, canada.

I wasn't around at the time but I'd really hate it if situations like Yulia's were to happen again: having Olympic moments at the Team Event and then crashing on the day....  Edit: Especially when being asked to do both programs.

at least i doubt that situation could reoccur unless someone specifically asks for it. the only person who might go for that though is pchiddy i think. he really wants that gold and the team one is his most realistic shot. he needs to do the sp to get canada properly situated for the free but on the other hand, he is also their best free option too. i would not be surprised if this happens.

In Patrick's case, I wonder if he may be preparing for the Team Event more than the individual. His attitude nowadays seems to be a lot more mellow than last Olympics, where he was the favorite. And Canada has a really good chance for the OGM but individually Patrick is more or less in the same boat as Javi: if clean, they have good chances to medal, but it's also highly dependent on higher BV skaters not going clean. 

Beside Patrick,  Nathan might do both in team event too since he has the highest potential score among US men. Of course, if Vincent manage to make a breakthrough this season, he might be other option too . To think they might have to skate 4 programs in 1 week, with all those quads make me.

As for Japan, since they have very little chance of medal, both Yuzu and Shoma can get high score, so Yuzu for SP, Shoma for FS. Of course their pairs/ice dance team has to qualify first.

Not to mention, all the FS event start in morning ( to NBC)

no Patrick anymore? Waiting for news... I hope he's all right, or maybe it was just a site mistake and he's still competing. I was excited to watch him! (As I am to watch Boyang... since I still haven't seen his programs but I'm not sure If I'm the only one there)

You didn't saw Boyang's programs yet??? Better...lol, the short was so-so, but the long, gowdie, he bombed harder then Yuzu at ACI  I'm waiting for Finladia to make myself an idea about it ... 

I remembered in the last team event selection criteria of JSF, the skater with the highest SB in short goes to team short event; the skater with the highest SB in long goes to do the long. If one skater fits in both, then the skater will go to the short, and the one with second highest SB in long will do the long. TBH I don't see Japan on the team podium, maybe not even keep their 4th place as Sochi, so really no need to waste time and energy on the main focusBut seriously, the team event schedule is mostly unfriendly to pairs, then men. Ladies should be okay as they do get a considerable gap in between.

I can still recall back in Sochi Patrick claimed that he was only going to do the short in team event, definitely not the longwe will see how things turn around this time

But Patrick was the favorite for OGM then, he didn't want to tire himself out for the individual. This time around, I'm not quite sure what the plans will be for him and for Team Canada.

yes, i think individually chiddy is in a bind, even more so perhaps than javi. he may not have gone for it at aci but we still do not know whether the 4lo is an option there or not. if it is, then actually it'll be javier > chiddy, yet another potential issue for patrick there plus i would say in terms of judging it is javi > patrick too, the whole of europe is backing javier.

 

in which case i totally understand focusing on the team event. yes, at sochi we had that but then at sochi he was so sure he has the gold medal in the individual. i think he's realistic in his outlook now. i am not saying he has no podium chances, but they are definitely less than they were 4 years ago. so from that angle i think that he may want to push the canadian gold as much as he can. 

 

of course the interesting bit there are the russian men. i thought eh but i wonder now. if kolyada can get that lz and landing it at nepela now is most likely a huge boost mentally, it's going to be such a tight race between usa/russia/canada

 

which all the more makes me wish that japan does not take it so seriously. they haven't got a prayer for a medal but i know, i know.

I know Yuzu wouldn't do something like that but I kinda wish he'd just treat the Team as practice and not go for the win

I think Patrick actually mentioned in some interview that one of the biggest motivations for him to come back to the field was the team gold; so I won't be surprised if he weighs more on the team even this time, which is sensible as imo Canada stands the biggest chance of team gold

what are the chances that Japan gets a dance spot? (or a pairs one but iirc dance is more likely.)

Pretty good, I think? At least for dance. Not sure on pairs.
